I suppose once you become the Lions "you are my second choice, I'll get back to you after I talk to the team I like better" is what you deal with.

No maybe the Lions are the first choice and someone is using another team to get more money. Do you just accept the first job offer handed to you without knowing what another company is offering? It's like free agency. Players negotiate with other teams so why not a GM? I know you want to find fault with everything the Lions are doing here, but they seem to be doing what every other team is doing except the Texans who may have forced their star QB out of town.

Gonna ignore the rushing stats and TDs?

He rushed 8 times for 34 yards.  So his total offensive output was 106 yards in three quarters.  He did score two rushing touchdowns, but his longest run in the game was for only nine yards,  And he threw a pick.  So nothing to dance in the streets over.

He's a rookie quarterback who was having a bad day --Quarterback Rating of just 42.3 -- in a game in which a loss was more valuable than a win.  So the coach put in another quarterback who's no great shakes, either, but did manage a higher completion percentage than Hurts while he was in there.  And even though Pederson is gone, the club and the fans should be thanking him when they use that Number 6 draft pick, not to mention for the Super Bowl win that he led them to.

Hurts has a lot of talent and may turn out to be a fine NFL quarterback.  But taking him out in that game was not worthy of all this sturm und drang.

Much ado about nothing.

well we can hope.

I know people like to talk about how terrible Al Avila is with the Tigers - but I have to say that it seemed to me he knew from the get go he wanted Hinch - went directly after him and didn't even let him leave town once he had him here. Now mabe Hinch will turn out to be a disaster, and maybe the claim can be made Hinch was damaged goods so the Tigers had no competition, but I still liked seeing how much Avila knew exactly what he wanted and went and got it.

I think we are going to find the answer to this  very shortly with Saleh.    NYJ are meeting again and Philly has just requested an interview with the Lions presumed to be somewhere in this picture.    If the Jets make an offer today will Saleh take it without hearing from the Eagles and Lions?

The Lions did that with Bob Quinn and Bob Quinn did that with Matt Patricia.

If they end up hiring a Smith or Dimitroff that was available weeks ago then I’m sure they will take some criticism for wasting the advantage of having an earlier opening.   I’m not sure that makes sense now they have been able to secure an interview with Dodds that never would’ve happened had they made a GM call a few weeks back.  We also don’t know how far they’ve gotten kicking tires on Colbert or Schneider this week but it is believed to have happened.      They have made the right choice waiting.

it seems like things are starting to pick up pace around the league.

If they can pry away Colbert or Schneider than it was worth the wait. Colbert makes sense. His contract is coming up in Pittsburgh. Rothelisberger looks like he's at the end of the line so Pittsburgh may be doing a rebuild. He could come back to Detroit where he has Stafford in place and take on a new challenge of turning around the Lions.

Quinn certainly did with Patricia. I would disagree on Quinn. In a sense it was the opposite - the impetus was coming from the outside with Quinn.

Holmes is a guy I like, but we have other, better candidates we can and should turn to if he ends up as the Falcons GM.

I'm kind of fine with all the dominoes falling as none of them seem to be Dodds. Outside of Saleh, I haven't seen a name that I would be disappointed if they went elsewhere.

oh, you mean schneider's contract is up soon and he's looking for a raise?  wow, what a coincidence that this report suddenly pops up in the news feed of an nfl reporter who gets his scoops from agents!

hmmmm...

exactly.

So is Kevin Colbert doing the same thing with Pittsburgh in your view?

He may be but I think there is genuine interest by the Lions as well. I'm not sure the Lions were ever interested in Schneider.

how did the news come out that the lions were interested?

a lions or steelers beat reporter?  if so, there might be some validity to it.  from a national guy?  probably zero validity and just a ploy from his agent.

Colbert’s contract is up in a few months so Pittsburgh is either giving him a raise and an extension or letting him walk.

So I guess Dodds had a bad interview too.  They refuse to make a decision. I don’t care that no one else has.  Shows the lions have no idea what they want.

Some people just need to chill. The season ended a week ago. They've only had a week to really start interviewing candidates. These candidates are also being pursued by other teams. A same old Lions move would have been to rush and hire someone nobody else wanted like Houston did. I'm encouraged the Lions are being linked to candidates that are being pursued by other teams. Makes me think they are going after the right people.

There is no indication that just because Holmes is getting a second interview that (a) that's a bad thing, or that (b) it means Dodds is out, or didn't interview well.

I think it means Holmes is a finalist, which is apparently the case elsewhere as well, which probably means he is a popular candidate. And I would think 2 or 3 candidates would receive a second interview in a well executed search.

In circles I can recall from the past (not here), most people preferred Patricia to Vrabel last time around, and preferred Whisenhunt to Caldwell the time before that. The popular candidate is not always the best candidate.
