Matt Patricia/Bob Quinn fired - Holmes/Cambell Hired as GM/Coach

Recommended Posts

I was leaning towards getting season tickets next season. Kind of thing I’ve been interested in for a while and now that I finally have a career that has me in Michigan working M-F I was about ready to pull the trigger. Might even have done it this season if not for the virus.

Marvin Lewis may be the one thing that would stop me. Not sure I could do it while they effectively put up a “Mediocrity is OK with us” billboard up outside Ford Field.

You can find whatever you’re looking for.  There are reports that Salehs interview was great.

And the only source saying Saleh didn’t interview well came from a Houston beat writer. My take it away, no one has any idea.

I will say this, if they hire Marvin Lewis, that would be incredibly uninspiring.

At least with Marvin Lewis we'd win the division finally and make the Wildcard round of the playoffs every year and lose. 1st round loses for the next decade sounds exciting.

If we wanted to have mediocre we could have kept Caldwell. Yes I know he had a winning record but I don't think he would have ever won a playoff game with us. At least with Saleh we have a unknown commodity as a head coach and we can hope he can take us to the promised land. With Marvin Lewis we know what he does in the playoffs yuck!

Now the Lions are gonna interview Todd Bowles?  What is going on.   Make a damn decision.  A week since the season ended, still no coach or GM.   Get moving with it.

Yeah, I would not be excited about Lewis.  With urban being tied to Jacksonville and Daboll to LAC the lions can afford to take their time.   Still think the job ends up going to Saleh.

I have no idea why Josh McDaniels gets so many opportunities. He literally drove his best QB and WR out of town and drafted Tim Tebow in the 1st round.

Maybe they have enough if you think outside the box. Does Houston want to win now? Dangle Stafford and the 7th overall pick and maybe some future picks.

These NE guys all think they’re the smartest guys in the league.

But every single one of them was riding Brady’s coattails.

Playoffs? I sure would like to see those again.

I’ll take an extra week or more if it gets me Riddick/Saleh instead of Anyone/Lewis

I was listening to the Pride of Detroit podcast and they interviewed a Cincinnati Bengals beatwriter who said this exact same thing when asked. He said Lewis is conservative and always opts for punting.

Whomever the Channel 7 sports reporter was last night, they called him Todd Bowels (as in your colon).   Honestly, I think that person should be out of a job for being that stupid.      I mean, he was a head coach in the NFL very recently and you've never heard of him?

But it would be a VAST improvement over Matt Patricia, who I think may be one of the worst 5 Head Coaches in the history of the league.  I still have no idea what he was trying to accomplish with the defense and hand-picked personnel he had for it.

I will say regarding Marvin Lewis, I don't believe he ever got a fair shake in Cincinnati. Mike Brown is the owner, president and general manager and it has been that way since 1991. He is notoriously cheap and won't relinquish any GM duties. I'm pretty impressed frankly that Lewis made the playoffs 7 times.

Just no Belichik assistants, please.  A bunch of arrogant assholes who fail just about everywhere - mostly because of their arrogance.   You can't lump the successful Mike Vrabel in that group since he was a player for New England and never coached there.  It's that whole "I'm from New Engalnd and I know more than everyone else, don't question me" bullspit.  I can't stand any of them.   They are all errand boys for Belichick, and seeing as how Brady managed in TB this year and New England failed without Brady, I'm not so sure Belichick is all that great anyway.   If he wanted to protect his legacy he'd retire now before he gets totally exposed.

The more I think about what it is in particular I cannot stand about Marvin Lewis the more I think of their playoff game against Pittsburgh a few years ago. In prime position to win their first playoff game since 1991, they managed to butcher it by giving up 40 yards to an injured Ben Roethlisberger, then giving up 30 yards in penalties in one play when Vontaze Burfict decapitated Antonio Brown and then Adam Jones followed it up with an unsportsmanlike conduct to gift wrap the game to the Steelers with a Chris Boswell kick.

That was in Marvin Lewis’s 12th season with the Bengals, and he had absolutely no control over his team in that moment.

To be fair, nobody has ever had control over Vontaze Burfict. The Lions talk about culture more than anything and the Bengals were known early on in Lewis career for culture problems but probably out of Lewis control. I'm surprised Lewis stayed as long as he did. He's not an inspiring choice but I'm not sure how to evaluate him given the Bengals have worse ownership than the Lions. I suspect his interview is more to satisfy the Rooney rule.

After watching Josh Allen and Buffalo yesterday and seeing what a remarkable turnaround Allen has had from one of the least accurate to one of the most accurate passers in the league, I really wish Bills OC Brian Daboll was getting an interview. It seems the Lions are prioritizing a locker room leader type of coach over a scheme specialist. But what D(I assume) Daboll has been able to do with Josh Allen and the Buffalo offense is remarkable. Allen's up significantly in every offensive category including yards, TD's, points, TOP over his first two seasons. It would be fun to see what Daboll could do with either Stafford or his own rookie QB.

Drew and Mike had Spielman on for about an hour right after he was hired.  He said at this level you assume everyone can do the X's and O's so he was specifically looking for someone with leadership qualities.

That is code for "Don't get us in trouble"

The Ford family has always been paranoid that any bad actors on the Lions would by association, soil the Ford nameplate. It's the price you pay for wanting to keep the team so close to your name to bask in the reflected celebrity but the same name is also the logo of the company they all have to protect.  In fact I was surprised they put up with Suh as long as they did because of that. I can't say outright that this is a bad thing, but it is a self imposed limitation. A lot the people driven hard enough to excel in sports have a lot of sharp edges, and the Lions most definitely do not like people with even the most remote chance of leaving them bleeding bad PR.

They had some really talented teams. If anything, some of those teams underachieved a bit and they always folded in clutch moments.

While I wouldn't hate a Lewis hiring, I'd be far from inspired by it which is exactly what I felt about the Caldwell hire. Hiring Lewis would be akin to taking a high floor, modest ceiling prospect where you know what you'll get but there's no franchise potential. I'd rather they take the risk of hiring Saleh, breathe some life into this dead carcass of a franchise.
