Washington F/k/a Redskins v Lions

I just watched it again a few times.  The ball was on the wrong shoulder but Cephus did slow and probably should have caught it.   It wasn’t on the money but  it was good enough to be caught.

Cephus looked shocked the ball was there. He has never played with a QB who can make that throw.

They need a QB more and this meaningless win went a long way in messing that up.

They've played themselves right out of the Lawrence/Fields/Lance sweepstakes. The next GM, assuming there is one,.will be stuck with Stafford.

Since the Lions drafted Stafford #1, the following Qbs have been taken in the first round of the draft:

Sam Bradford, Tim Tebow

Cam Newton, Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder

Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Ryan Tannehill, Brandon Weedon

EJ Manuel

Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater

Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota

Jared Goff, Carson Wentz, Paxton Lynch

Mitch Trubisky, Patrick Mahomes, DeShaun Watson

Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen, Lamar Jackson

Kyler Murray, Daniel Jones, Dewayne Haskins

Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovaiola, Justin Herbert, Jordan Love

QBs come along every year and QBs BUST EVERY YEAR.

Every year this is a "great year for Qbs" and every year we "have to take a QB to replace Stafford."  Be careful what you wish for.  For every Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson, there are three Sam Bradford, Marcus Mariota and Mitch Trubisky's.

I probably won't to be too upset if the Lions take a QB in the first round, Stafford is getting older (even if his physical abilities aren't showing any signs of slowing down, he still has a gun for an arm) and if there is a new regime in place they may want time to develop their own QB while they rebuild this god awful roster.  But let's not kid ourselves, if there are five QBs taken in the first round next year, odds are that at least 3 of them won't be as good as Matt Stafford, and two of them will probably be total busts.

Given the Lions' track record, which type do you think they'll pick?  Lol.

Except for Houston, the Lions are going to be underdogs in every game left on the schedule.  I can see them going 5-11 and picking 5th or 6th.

Lawrence and Fields are a different beast, these guys are almost surefire franchise guys. Sometimes you just know a QB will be successful by the eye test and those guys fit the mold. There's also guys like Trask and Mac Jones who are going under the radar as potential high end pros but have the attributes of good pro QBs. Then there's Lance and Wilson who are the wild cards. This is a really good draft to have a top 10 pick if you want a QB. A lot of the draft classes you listed weren't projected to be great QB classes and the only one that really disappointed relative to expectations was Winston and Mariota.

Anyway, so that game sucked eh?  I keep repeating the same thing to the point of annoying the **** out of you guys by now but those Jacksonville and especially Atlanta wins were damaging. I called it after the Atlanta win and I'm sticking by it. This is now going to be a 6-7 win team (they aren't going 1-6 with a healthy Stafford, not happening) and will likely buy Quinntricia another year. This was the worst kind of game, they look like trash against The Team and squeak out a win. Headed straight to NFL purgatory.

Great list.   The last 4 years have produced 8 really good QBs, 3 that are still starters but the jury is out (Baker, Darnold, Jones) and only 2 busts (Trubisky and Rosen).  The odds of drafting a good QB are much better than they’ve ever been and the Lions have taken advantage of it by picking Okudah, Hockenson, Ragnow, and Davis.

Who are the 8 "really good QBs" in the last 4 years if the jury is still out on Baker?

Is the jury still out on Darnold?  Come on...

Is the jury still out on Haskins or is he a bust?  He's not on your list.

Darnold is a bust.  Jones is looking like a bust.  Mayfield is ok but not as good as Stafford has been.   It's too early to say anything about any of the 4 QBs drafted last year unless you have secret tape of Jordan Love practicing in Green Bay.  And Justin Herbert is coming back to earth pretty quickly.  Burrow?  Who knows?

Everything all of you are saying about next year's QB class has been said about all of those QBs before.  I remember Tony Dungy telling America how Marcus Mariota was the next great NFL QB.

I think we all need to take a step back and look at history.  If there are 5 QBs taken in the first round, most likely one will be a superstar, one will be good, one will be league average, and two will be busts.  Remember 1999?  Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb, Akili Smith, Daunte Culpepper and Cade McNown.  Two amazing busts in Smith and McNown, one superstar in McNabb , one good QB in Culpepper, and one average to below average in Couch.

That's what usually happens and that's what is likely to happen again this year.  Again, not that the Lions shouldn't take a QB is someone falls to them, but the chances of that person being Lamar Jackson or Patrick Mahomes are not great.

8 really good QBs:

Burrow

Herbert

Tua

Kyler

Lamar

Josh Allen

Watson

Mahomes

Busts:

Trubisky

Rosen

Love doesn’t count since he’s developmental and hasn’t played. Haskins could go here or bust since he’s not gotten a fair shake to play in his limited time but honestly I don’t care to argue the point with him so he could go either place for all I care

When you look at what’s happened recently it’s obvious that you’re re spouting off an old narrative. The numbers say the chances of hitting are better now than they have ever been.

Beyond my personal bias against Stafford, I'm willing to take the risk for three reasons. One, we already know what Stafford is and for better or for worse, he's an above average QB whose both capable of playing like an elite-level player and a bottom third of the league QB. We know that we have a guy who can go out and wow you with impressive throws and stats one week and then make rookie-level mistakes and decision making the next. Two, I want to allow the new head coach, whomever it ends up being (but certainly if it is an offensive guy like Eric Bienamy) to have his own guy and build an offense and a team how he wants it built. Stafford shouldn't be forced on anyone, the option of keeping him should be given to the new regime and new coaching staff. Three, if you bring in a rookie QB you end up with a ton of cap flexibility once you clear Stafford's contract off the books and it isn't as if you are winning anything with him here at present anyways. I want a top 5 pick because I want a shot at one of Lawrence, Fields, or Lance. Maybe it flops miserably, maybe it doesn't. But we already know where we are at and where we will go with Stafford.

I would add Sam Darnold to the bust list, but only on account that he plays for the only Head Coach in Adam Gase, who you could argue is worse than Patricia. He also plays on an offense that has zero talent around him. Brashad Perriman and 400 year old Frank Gore are the best players on his offense and that is really, really bad. I think Darnold would have turned out much differently as a player if the dysfunctional Adam Gase-led Jets weren't the team he landed on.

bridgewater and mccaffrey both may miss the game on sunday.  setting up nicely for a win and a march to 7-9 and "playoff contention!"

As NY Lion has said on several occasions, I think 7-9 is enough of an improvement to keep this regime here for another year. I think we first have establish, before firing these two, if Shelia Ford is even a real person or just made up. It would be nice if ownership would come out and do an interview once and a blue moon or do a midseason address to the media to deal with all the speculation.

They are both gone the day after the season ends.   Sheila did interviews after she was hired and listening to them she struck me as somebody that actually knows a thing or two about football.  Says she has been a fan of not only the Lions but football in general her whole life and watches every game.  She has also talked about being an extremely competitive person in sports dating back to her Softball and Field Hockey days which she was very good so judging by everything I've heard from her I just don't see her settling for them being mediocre or average.

I stand by my notion that if Stafford didn't miss last year and we weren't in the middle of this COVID crisis that she would've fired them the day she got the job.

But we shall see, I've certainly been wrong before but as of now I'm not sweating them coming back next year, I am extremely confident that they will both be gone barring some miracle of the Lions finishing with 10 wins or something.

Yes, there are others and yes, scouts and analysts and football pundits have been wrong before. But that said, Fields and Lawrence both pass the eye test of being big time, incredibly talented QB's at the next level. Both are solid pocket passers with touch on the short throws, deep ball accuracy, and good decision making abilities. I don't think anyone believes, not professional scouts, coaches, GMs, analysts or fans of varying insight levels, that Lawrence or Fields are going to be Tim Couch's or Ryan Leaf's at the next level. These are two potential star QB's who many Lions fans don't want to miss out on.

Theo Epstein is leaving the Cubs.

Sheila Ford should at least give him a call.

It's about hiring the right people, not about being a baseball guy or football guy.

Well, you could have said Theo was dumb for taking on the cursed Red Sox.   You could have said he was dumb to take on the cursed Cubs.   Sheila - You can give Rod Wood a very nice-playing figurehead position -  Hire Theo,  back up the Brinks Truck...........Then stay completely 100% out of his way.   HE'S THE CURSE BREAKER !

both the cubs and the red sox have huge financial advantages over their peers that the lions do not have.  and both the red sox and cubs had been close to the promised land but lost in fluky circumstances.

the lions have never been close in my lifetime and never had the sustained regular season success of the sox or even the cubs.

sigh.  we're the worst.

Just two easy wins away from 6-5 after thanksgiving and heading into the second bears game. Dare I say 7-5 is in the cards?
