they did give us 2 first rounders for Roy Williams!

They already have the red-headed version.   Puts up big numbers but can't win a playoff game.

the fact that dalton and cam newton got cut rate one year deals tells you what the trade market will be for stafford on his massive deal.

as in: Zero.

i bet they can get a 2nd rounder for him this offseason maybe. 3rd for sure.

This offseason he will be middle of the road when it comes to QB salary

Why would they take on a guy who has had back injuries the last two seasons and has not been very good this season and has yet to win a really big game?   Just look at his record against winning teams.   No more of the excuse of not having enough around him - he really hasn't truly elevated teammates.  He's just a good QB, nothing special.   Well that's what Andy Dalton is, and he's a lot cheaper.    Plus, Quinn and Patricia's jobs are on the line - do you think they are going to but that in the hands of Chase Daniel?

I don't think it's going to happen but honestly the best chance for Quinn to save his job is to trade Stafford, he would then have that excuse for the Lions finishing with a horrible record.

If they finish 6-10 with Stafford then he has no excuse and will almost certainly be gone.   But if they trade Stafford and have to play with a backup and finish say 3-13 he could say "Well I sacrificed this year to gain future capital, when I get my QB in the draft things will be different."

All hypothetical cause I'm almost certain none of this is going to happen, just saying that if he wants to save his job he probably would be better served trading Stafford or even have him go down with an injury. Atleast then he would have an excuse.

Why its dangerous to have a desperate GM - at least until the Trade Deadline.   After that, its about managing what you have.   I like Stafford, he seems like a good guy, geninuely good, and certainly no Jeff George, but he's getting about the same results as George, just not pissing everyone off all the time - and not wearing eye black for a night game in a domed stadium.........

Trade him if the offer is there. But it won't be so keep him. And really, does it matter? Years and years of high draft choices got us no championships, what makes anyone think it could possibly ever change? But for your viewing pleasure;

100% disagree.

so youre saying that the best way for quinn to keep his job every year is to trade any good player he has for picks and convince ownership that he needs more time?

this aint baseball.  any team should be able to rebuild in football in a year or two.  the fact that quinn has had five and the team isnt any good is an indictment on his vision for a team and his ability to identify talent.

hey, if he is a magician and can hypnotize sheila into thinking he is the man to trade stafford and make the draft picks to rebuild the team, then god bless him.  but i dont think that will work.  if they dont make a playoff run this year, he's out of here.

I don't know about a year, your premise is still correct. Certainly in 3 yrs you've have 12 picks in the 1st 4 rounds which is a whole starting line-up one side of the ball. If you can't demonstrably improve a bad team by then you don't draft well and if you don't draft well you will never win in the NFL. You simply cannot consistently miss on early round picks in the NFL. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to know that about pro football. There is no way Quinn should still be here, and if he weren't, we wouldn't still be talking about his buddy either.

In general I think many of us are guilty of overrating what the rest of the league feels about Staff due to how much better he has been than the horrible QBs we have suffered with throughout the decades.

I think the rest of the league recognizes his talent but I just don't think they value him enough to trade anything of significance for him, particularly due to his age.

I suspect there would be a little higher value for Stafford.  Cam Newton is part running back, part QB... so there's going to be some durability questions there.  I think Newton had the higher ceiling, but I think teams probably feel his drop off will be higher as well.  He's on the wrong side of 30 for his RB portion of his career.  A pure throwing QB like Stafford, in theory, can have a much longer career.

As for Dalton, he was never considered a high level prospect like Stafford.  Regardless of what their actual stats have been, Stafford was a more highly thought of player.  Dalton wasn't even a 1st round pick while Stafford was 1st over all, and no one really questioned if he deserved that spot.

For that reason I think Stafford will get the benefit of the doubt... some will say his lack of playoff success is a team issue, not a QB issue and with the right team he'll be just fine.

Now, having said all this I think the value for Stafford will be higher, but not considerably higher.  There's no way we'd get one first round pick for him, let alone two.  I think a 3rd is a remote possibility, but probably a 4th honestly.

If Stafford can turn his season around and return to the form of last season, then maybe he has some value.  But the way he's playing right now?  I doubt it.

Then again, if the Raiders are looking for a QB you never know what that crazy old Jon Gruden will do.

I would love to see Stafford get a chance to play for a good organization.  Admittedly, I've stopped watching or even caring about the Lions, so I would not share in the pain that many fans would feel from losing a star player like Matt, though I know he has his (mostly silly IMO) detractors.

Stafford definitely has gotten too much crap that he doesn't deserve from many Lions fans but on the other hand I feel he can be overrated by his supporters.

He's a solid 2nd or 3rd tier QB(I'd put him in that 10-15 range for QBs) who could excel on a team with a ton of talent.  When hes at his best he is obviously better than that but he just isn't 'at his best' as much as the top tier or even high end 2s are.

Basically I feel like some of his supporters think it would be impossible to replace him like he is a prime Rodgers or something.

On the flip side his haters think he could be easily replaced which isn't true either.
