It would not surprise me to see Tarik Skubal have a better career than either MIze or Manning.

It would be nice to finally see Manning and so we get some idea how he fares against MLB hitters.

I thought I saw both promise and peril in Mize. He seemed to me like he was way too psychologically dependent on that split. I think his stuff is good enough that he needs to persuade himself to go back to throwing his FB with that great command he used to have and leave the trick pitch in his pocket about 70% of the time he is tempted to throw it. MLB batters can hit anything they are looking for. If you have a good FB and the command to keep moving it around the zone that has be the core of your approach. I hope that it's just that he has been off so much since he was drafted that he needs enough work for his confidence in his command to come back.

In order to get guys out consistently you have to be able to locate your fastball. Mize just wasn't doing that and they were laying off his splitter. It's not uncommon for young pitchers to get to the majors and for their command to take a while to catch up. Couple that with a weird offseason and he should get a bit of a pass. I worry more about his health.

This year will be interesting because his fastball command was considered plus in the past, along with a plus plus split. He has had injury issues so hopefully they aren't going to have a long term impact on his command.

Yep his fastball command was his biggest issue and really he hasn't had it since that injury he suffered in the summer of 2019 which concerns me a bit.

I'm just a little concerned cause I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that perhaps he was a little rusty coming back from the injury at the end of 2019 and could've been off in 2020 due to the long layoff and not having a normal off-season.

I'm confident he'll be ok. Didn't he set an ncaa record for k:bb ratio? I'm also confident that I will never again eat liver and onions.

Sort of interesting. If I read it right, no other players (than Sutton) from the 81 or 88 WS champs have had their number retired. Those teams had a lot of very good players, but no generational/HOF ones ( Sutton was on the 88 team, but not the 81 team).   Every  one of the starting 8 on the 81 team had been to an all-star game, most to several, but none made the hall.

Dodgers may also have the highest ratio of manager's/player's numbers retired (20%). Not sure how you count the Yankees since Martin, Berra and Torre all played and managed.

In other news, Fergie Jenkins and Gaylord Perry have scheduled a press conference for tomorrow to confess that they habitually cheated throughout their playing careers and demand that the Hall kicks them out immediately.

It's well known, and Perry admitted to, being a big cheater

Speaking of the 5th grade...

My teacher’s name was Mrs. Wilson. True story. We had a writing assignment at home that was to be read aloud in class the following day. Forgot the circumstances but I didn’t have my paper done. When each student began reading their assignment aloud, seat by seat, row by row, I had to have a plan. I didn’t have the guts to tell the teacher I didn’t have mine. I sat approximately center of the room. The teacher was at the front. I came up with a plan. When it was my turn, I stared at a blank piece of paper and verbally did a report on the Lewis and Clark Expedition that ran maybe 2.5 minutes. Probably the longest 2.5 minutes of my life.

Actually, I was into music at that age, moreso than most my age. I really liked Gary Lewis and the Playboys and The Dave Clark Five.

Regarding 7-inning doubleheaders, I haven't read much about it, but is the idea to put doubleheaders on the schedule during the winter in order to shorten the length of season between Opening Day and the last Sunday of the year? If so, the idea at least makes sense, but if they're still not going to put doubleheaders on the schedule, then what's the point?

I don't think the idea is to schedule 7 inning doubleheaders.  I think it is that when doubleheaders are needed to make up games, they would be 7 inning doubleheaders.

Its probably poor wordsmithing on my part to use "scheduled".  All doubleheaders are scheduled, they don't finish a game and suddenly say, "hey, let's do that again".

Tork leads the way at number 5 overall followed by Skubal at 20, Mize at 28, Manning at 30 and Greene at 31.   I didn't see the whole list but I take it that there were no other Tigers in the top 100?

Considering the high draft picks at their disposal, they should have a good number of highly ranked prospects.

Mize and Torkelson were 1st overall picks.  Teams need to hit on these picks.

Green was a 5th overall.  Manning was a 9th overall.  OK, pretty good.

Green was a 9th round pick, so that is impressive.

But is the farm system in the shape it should be considering all of the tanking?  Is there good enough depth overall going forward or is the farm system just top heavy with a few guys?

hard to say--last year was a loss, so hard to assess the guys who were drafted in 2019, who had half a season and those drafted last year, who haven't played in a professional game yet.
