You have the fans, then you have the players. Since a day/night DH is two separate tickets, I imagine few fans buy seats to both ends. The old school back-to-back DH was a single ticket. Of course in the 'old days' when games were 2:10-2:30, that DH was 4-5 hrs. Now a single game can get to 4 hrs so I can see the players really liking the 7inning option.

Sorry, I was referring only to the players with the doubleheader scenarios.  It’d be a long day for the fans, sure.  But since when do the fans factor into how MLB works, unless it’s how MLB can get some more coin out of its fans?

Possibly.  Similar to what the players are doing with expanded playoffs.  They are pretending not to like it because they know how much the owners need it (already promised it to TV).

So, yes, baseball fans are going to go through the crud of the last two seasons and then listen to the wankering back and forth between MLB & MLBPA for a CBA negotiation.  Good times.

Last I heard the Tigers were trying Workman at SS.  I wonder how that is working out thus far,  he could be a real sleeper in the system if he can handle it.  I remember hearing that many scouts pegged him as a 1st rounder if not for him struggling in the abbreviated college season last year.

Well, by traditional doubleheaders, I meant one game right after the other.  When was the last scheduled doubleheader, like originally scheduled as a doubleheader on the pocket schedules that used to be available?  Are those things available anymore?  Good grief, we're all getting older.

I'm not convinced of the runner on second, but, whatever.

The expanded playoffs are probably here to stay.

Sure you can still get the pocket schedules. I usually pick them up at spring training, for both spring training and regular season.

Honestly, I figured those had been phased out given smartphones and aps and such.  I suppose the market for them is much lower than they used to be.

Those were always a ray of sunshine in February/March if you found one at whatever establishment.

Will be interesting to see where he starts and at what position.  If they think Tork can stick at 3B, they should put Workman at SS in Lakeland.

I’d like to see the following:

Lakeland

2B T. Cruz, SS Workman, 3B Torkelson, C D. Dingler

West Michigan

2B A. Lipcious, SS R. Kreidler, 3B Quintana, C C. Johnson

Erie

2B K. Clemens, SS W. Perez, 3B TBD, C J. Morgan

Toledo

2B I. Paredes, SS Z. Short/S. Alcantara, 3B D. Pinero, C J. Rogers

I'm going to guess Paredes wins a spot on the 25(6?) out of ST.

I guess with the lost year we are going to see a lot of minor league players that seem a little older, but even given that Zach Short is the kind of guy whose clock is ticking.  I can imagine the Tigers giving him a quick promotion/audition and then letting him go if he doesn't show something pretty quickly.

A bit late in the day, but a cool pic I saw on Twitter of MLK playing ball with his daughter.

It would seem like Workman at SS is something to pursue regardless of whether or not Torkelson as at 3B or 1B.  Workman has played more SS than 3B in the Cape Cod League, whereas he was a 3B at Arizona State.  Alika Williams was the SS for ASU and was drafted by the Yankees in the 1st round (or 37th overall if you prefer).

Paredes has had a really nice Winter League.  The Tigers didn't use him at 2B in 2019 (Erie).  He played SS & 3B.  Not sure if that's because they don't see him as a 2B or not.  It will be interesting to see how the new coaching staff views him.  It would seem like they will have a say in where Paredes plays defensively, be it at Toledo or Detroit.  Hopefully he can carry over his recent success (the 27 BB to 12 SO probably would be tough to repeat) into Lakeland.

Maybe they are not sure about his arm so they want give that as much testing as they can.

Isn't Clemens like 37 by now? I would think this is a very important year for him to show something more.

Yeah - an interview just went up with him at mlb.com/tigers and he pretty much said himself he was running out of time.

Not a good sign that Clemens was not invited to the summer developmental camp--drafted as a college player, two years in the system, 3rd round draft pick.

Via ESPN:

4. Cristian Santana (17), SS, Dominican Republic, Tigers, 45 FV

More in the Colmenarez camp, Santana has now hit/power ability near the top of the class, but moves off of shortstop eventually for most scouts. He's a fine athlete but is a hitter first and foremost, with hands for the infield, but limited physical projection. He's the cousin of Tigers prospect Wenceel Perez.

Mark your calendar for 2026.

MLB rule changes: League still discussing universal DH and expanded playoffs for 2021 season

I realize most folks are and have been engaged in adapting on the fly for nearly a year now.  And this is just sports and entertainment.  But it just seems dumb as can be that MLB hasn't figured out its roster structure and DH rules for the upcoming season already.

The DH rules is probably preventing market action on a handful of players.  OK, yes, that does sound funny because the free agent market overall has been pretty quiet to begin with.  Still, why create obstacles to the NL teams trying to figure out what to do about the DH?

Pitching is going to be another issue, and it sounds like the questions surrounding arms that had an abridged 2020 season are getting a bit louder.  For instance, the 6 man rotation seems to be gaining some traction, at least in general theory for the beginning of the season.  The questions of game stamina and bounce back for all pitchers seem legit.  While I'm not a fan of the seemingly shortened work loads of pitchers over the years, there needs to be some emphasis on protecting arms this season.  Maybe that is by expanding rosters or having a separate taxi squad roster for pitchers?

I think the proposal of using 7 inning double headers and the running on 2nd to start extra innings are sign of concern for this season again, and I think its reasonable.

The cynic in me wouldn't doubt that they have already decided to go forward with the DH and are simply delaying announcement of it to allow NL teams to obtain market advantage versus free agents.

You are probably right about more teams adopting six-man rotations, as well as expanded rosters (all of which would go straight to the bullpen), but all these changes will do is exacerbate the problems Baseball has regarding three true outcomes, times of game, pitcher injuries, etc., by doubling down on the harmful strategies that would be leading to these tactical and structural "innovations".

Regarding 7-inning doubleheaders, I haven't read much about it, but is the idea to put doubleheaders on the schedule during the winter in order to shorten the length of season between Opening Day and the last Sunday of the year? If so, the idea at least makes sense, but if they're still not going to put doubleheaders on the schedule, then what's the point?

It would not surprise me to see Tarik Skubal have a better career than either MIze or Manning.

yeah, he had to go to some independent Texas league just to get some ABs; not good at all
