2020-21 Off season

It's hard to see them signing Schwarber who really only fits  at DH.  Eric Thames or CJ Cron might make more sense.  Schwarber hits a little better, but not that much better.

A recent quote from Al that pretty much defines the season-

"I look at it as being disciplined this year and resisting an urge to really try to step up," Avila said Friday. "The last thing we want to do is go out and spend some money that we're trying to get rid of next year or the year after that."

Paredes had a good BB rate if he makes the team and can maintain it against MLB pitching. Jeimer walks some. Niko about 10%.  Anybody else? Cabrera might still walk at at 10% rate but having him at 1st isn't much help.

as a stopgap, I like this lineup:

2B LaStella--.370 OBP (2020)

LF Grossman .344 OBP (2020)

3B Candelario .369 OBP (2020)

1B Cabrera

DH Cron

SS Castro

RF Goodrum

 C Somebody

CF Jones

Bench:  C Somebody, IF Somebody, OF Reyes, OF Rule V kid

Time to move on Stewart--let him go to AAA and force his way back in.  Let Paredes and Rogers get some more AB's in Toledo. Reyes fulfills his destiny as a #4 OF

The features of a capable GM includes building a winning roster, and making sure that every dollar spent is consistent with reasonably expected on-field performance.

Avoiding contracts because you fear Acts of God like fresh injuries (the fragility of starting pitchers notwithstanding) or player performance unexpectedly falling apart is a ridiculous level of caution, and is probably deadly to one of the core purposes of running a team (winning).

Saying he is an ex-catcher is pretty generous...he was a terrible catcher and is now an ex-terrible catcher. They things you cite as traits that could reasonably help him transition to first base are exactly the things he was terrible at as a catcher.

It's true he didn't have those skills in spades when he was trying to pass as a major league catcher. By the same token, a first baseman doesn't need to have those skills at that same level, a left fielder perhaps even less so.

When he played LF, Schwarber's strengths, such as they were, were that when he could catch basically all the balls he could reach, and he had a plus arm, both skills he transferred from catcher. His deficiencies pretty much stemmed from lack of range. The career-critical question for him is whether he can transfer that first skill enough to play an average first base, plus hit at an average first baseman's level.

Definitely not saying he's a lock to succeed. It's a bit of a long shot, but if he wants to extend his career profile beyond platoon DH, that's what he's got to do.

That's Pittsburgh PIrates-like thinking.

MLB has announced that AA and A level leagues will be delayed in starting this year. Sufficient vaccinations and social distancing through spring training is the reason for the delay. Reducing the number of personnel in the camps is the plan.

MLB is still scheduled to report on time.

Well, he didn't exactly refute it.

LaStella is an interesting case.  He's never been a regular, except for the 2020 "season".  Defensive metrics on bbref are unkind, but I wonder if that would improve for him by focusing on one defensive position heading into a spring training?

Don't forget Dan Meyer.  He batted .396 for Bristol last year.

That LeFlore guy was pretty exciting to watch.    He would at least sell a few tickets.  That is of course, if they could sell tickets.

He was my favorite Tiger for a couple years.  In jr high, we had a course where we learned about Greek mythology and also The Bible.  It was kind of an unusual course for a public school, but done very well and I liked it.  When a jr high kid likes a course, it must be good!  One assignment was to do a parody of the 23rd psalm and I did mine of Leflore.   I wasn't trying to be funny when I wrote it, but the best line of the parody was "My bases runneth over".   Anyway, I was encouraged to send the parody to Leflore, so I did.  I got no response, but didn't really expect one.   He was still my favorite until Fidrych arrived on the scene.

That's awesome. I wrote LeFlore a letter as well, telling him I believed he would get 3000 hits. Then cocaine happened.

good riddance.  nice to see him leave the division/league.  maybe the team formerly known as the Indians can throw Jose Ramirez in, too.

So the Indians got rid of Lindor and Carrasco...if they also got rid of all of the guys they got for them, they'd still be way better than the Tigers.

Given the Indians track record with pitchers you just know the 2 pitchers they got will turn out to be All Star caliber guys or at the very least dominate the Tigers for several years.
