Matt Joyce is still playing?  Wow

I thought I saw that, too, and I was going to say something about it, but with all of the fake news, I figured I should just keep quiet.

Joyce is working on his 13th year and 7th team.

He outlasted Edwin Jackson.

I think it depends on how you frame it.  Jackson still has the lead on teams (13) and seasons (17).

Plus Joyce never threw a 200 pitch no hitter.

But Joyce is still playing.  It's just funny because there was so much debate about that trade at the time.

It was good because Jackson had a career year with the Tigers and then was used to get Scherzer.

I was not doing an analysis.  I just saw humor in Joyce lasting so long.

For anyone interested I would highly recommend Halberstam's book The Fifties.  It's a huge book so a Kindle version might be best.... I read it 3 times.  So fascinating.  Topics ranged from Atomic bomb development and civil rights to Holiday Inns, McDonald's, Elvis, TV,  the pill, peyton place, Kinsey, etc.  I learned so much.

Read it for the first time a couple years ago. Excellent. I like how it is essentially a series of essays on the various topics you refer to.

Matt Joyce is a 15-win player with a 112 career OPS+ who’s made $26+ million during his career. He has had eight seasons of 1.5 WAR or better. He has been a valuable asset for a lot of teams. He’ll be 36 next year and he’s coming to the end, but he’s had a better career than 85% or so of all major leaguers in history.

Add in the fact that he was drafted in the 12th round.  Not bad.

theyre the "silent" generation because they came between the "greatest generation" and the biggest generation in american history up until that time (the boomers).

like my generation (gen x) coming between the boomers and the millennials.  we will be forgotten too.

My late father in law was a radio operator in WWII on a B-24 liberator that was shot down and just managed to crash in Switzerland. He spent the remainder of the war (shot down in late 1943) in Switzerland. The immediate family knew, and they were threatened with immediate incarceration if they said anything at all to anyone. Also the number of families that lost someone in WWI and later in WWII also created a norm in which many did not show much public emotion so to protect the feelings of the members of the immediate family that were dealing with the loss of loved ones.

These folks, in my estimation, were not only the greatest generation, but also knew how to be reserved to protect others. This is the silent majority that 1960's politicians talked about.

I wonder if there was another player we could've traded to get Jackson cause I would've liked to of had Joyce on some of those good Tigers teams.

Clete Thomas!

I was really bummed about Clete washing out. A complete baseball player, but for the tiny detail that he couldn't hit MLB pitching.

Yeah, I was rooting for him too.  He could field and run and could even draw a walk, but couldn't hit.  I doubt they could have substituted him into the deal. He was just the only one I can think of that had a similar profile to Joyce.

Pat Sheridan.  Matt Joyce.  Clete Thomas.  Andy Dirks.  All cut from the same cloth.  Victor Reyes will eventually be joining this club.

After doing a quick google search of the Tigers top prospects from that time I saw that atleast according to John Sickels, Clete was actually rated higher than Joyce.  Both were graded as C's though so it was marginal.   Of course that was pre 2008 so I'm sure views changed after he had a solid run in the big leagues that season.

dirks actually could hit a little bit - IIRC Dirks ended up with a chronic back injury didn't he? Was that part of his exit? And he was foolish about it also. I remember they had sent him to Toledo on a rehab one the last times he was dl'd for the back and he was trying to steal bases in his 1st or second appearance.

For reference, I went back and looked at my pre-2008 rankings....I had Joyce 13th and Clete 20th at that point.

Clete Thomas had great potential as a baseball name.

Trade was really dumb, but we got lucky that Edwin had a flukey good year and was able to be flipped for Scherzer.
