The leg kick kind of sounds familiar.  Or was that with James Future All Star and Eventual Hall of Famer McCann?

don't ask me why this ended up in Forbes  - go figure: Anyway:

One of the biggest focal points of discussion regarding Jake Rogers and his swing has to do with his very pronounced leg kick.

The best assessment of his leg kick came from Baseball America in their evaluation of him following the 2016 season where they wrote, “Since high school, he has had a very power-oriented swing with an exaggerated leg kick and weight transfer, but it's never really worked for him.”

further along in the article the discussion goes the fact that Jake thought being up on his back leg put him in a better position to adjust - of course I think most coaches would disagree, but more to the point, the bigger issue might be that he didn't execute the kick repeatably, so his real issue is just inconsistent mechanics.

Would Molina be a decent two year signing? His numbers are in decline but what better guy to have catching a young staff. Besides, I’m convinced the Tigers are looking at another year of so-so wins/losses.  He’d come much cheaper than Realmuto and bring much more experience. Al should at least inquire.

how hard is houston laughing at what they gave up for justin verlander?

Its beyond gut busting or knee slapping levels of laughter.  Its up to trash can banging levels of laughter.

the best, and hopefully not only , thing we received was an improved draft position.

You ask for a catcher and Al delivers. He's got his finger on the pulse of fan desires.

Well, I said do anything.  Beggars can’t be choosers seems to be our hot stove mantra.

You have to look long and hard to find someone with a lower batting average than our three existing catchers, but Al was up to the job.

still hope...same article.

“The Tigers are still expected to sign a veteran big-league catcher at some point this offseason. Garneau will presumably compete for a backup role with Grayson Greiner, Jake Rogers and Eric Haase.”

Even hope for a father son reunion

"General manager Al Avila told MLB Network Radio that his son, former Tigers catcher Alex Avila, is on their list of free-agent options."

Whoever can benefit the young pitching staff the most gets my vote.

The inside scoop is the NL will not use a DH this season, but the AL will use two.

Hmmmmm.....  He has postseason experience.

Maybe we're being a little too harsh on the deal?

Looks like his velo is still OK - the big diff in the last two years as his effectiveness fell was that he largely stopped throwing his change-up in favor of more sliders, which from a delta velo standpoint should have been fine because he throws whatever was being called a change in F/X harder than his slider. The problem seems to be that LHH started killing him. His platoon splits were good until 2018 at which point lefties started eating him alive. So it looks like maybe  he should go back to the pitch mix he was using prior to 2018 - unless it turns out he had to change because his arm was hurting or something like that.

But he didn't strike batters out prior to the last two years either.

no he did not. FIP argues that his good ERA in 2017 year was a fluke. This guy sounds sort of like Porcello but with a little stronger arm doesn't he? If he doesn't walk too many and his IF is good he has a chance not to be terrible, but still probably only if he figures out how to get lefties out like he did earlier in his career. So that's only three hurdles between him and success - Well, maybe only two on his end, I don't think the Tiger IF will be terrible - unless Castro has been unwilling to work on his throwing mechanics.

yeah - we can hope.  It is a little interesting though. When Houston started it's big pitching analytics push it was expressly away from ground ball sinker ball pitchers to guys in JV's mold - high K, high fastlball guys. So Hinch comes to Det and the 1st pitching acquisition runs in the other direction, plus you already have Fulmer, who is basically the same pitcher - power sinker/slider. So out of the chute we don't seem to be going in the direction of an Astros style staff.  I suppose he's just signed to eat innings so it doesn't matter but it's at least a little ironic.
