clear swing and a miss by Al letting McCann walk; last 2 years C has been a hot mess

To be fair, I think the majority of this forum agreed with the move.  I know I was not unhappy to see him go.

McCann probably benefited more than most cause of the ball and the Tigers underestimated just how much he would benefit from it.

Yes the rabbit ball was already around during his time here but I don't think he got a chance to rework his swing to get all the benefits of it cause it was still a newer concept.

Couple that with moving to a smaller ballpark and getting more days off against righties and you had the perfect recipe for him to outplay his actual skill level.

Tigers apparently didn't know what to do with him.

He was here for the rabbit ball during the HR-record setting 2017 season.

I addressed that but you can't just overhaul your swing and approach overnight.   I think after seeing the results guys had in 2017 is when many players changed their approach/swing going forward.

One thing that helped McCann’s offensive numbers on the south side were elevated BABIPs: .359 in 2019 and .339 this year. That may not be sustainable for a 6’3” 220 lb. catcher on the other side of 30.

They do...

It's just more fun when they are wrong and we are right!

McCann has only ever hit more than 250 and OPSd over 750 against RHP once in his career - 2019 (EDIT: and as Chas notes that was high BaBIP) He hit 232 with 9hr good for a 744 OPS in only 74 AB last season so whether 2019 was real improvement or noise or something in between is hard to tell. But he is the perfect guy to pair with a left hand catcher who can't hit lefties.

When I saw the name Buddy Reed,  I envisioned a small scrappy White second baseman.  It turns out he is a 6-4 Black outfielder.

Bud Lynch was a big man from what I recall.

McCann and his wife had premie twins and that is plenty enough to make you perform poorly in any job. Once that calmed down and he could concentrate on his game he improved. Cutting him was cold, cheap and short sighted. Solid defender, smart and good/ok hitter for a catcher. Good for him. We have zippo at catcher for the next 2 to 3 years.

Jim Bowden put out an article saying what every AL team should do and for the Tigers he put sign Taijuan Walker to a 1 year deal.  I'm sure Buddha approves.

Budd Lynch :)

He lived in Wyandotte.  His wife was a patient of my wife.  When her treatment was over Budd left some hockey tickets for the staff as a thank you.  They aren't allowed to accept gifts, normally that stuff goes to the hospital charity and will make its way to patient families somehow.  However two other therapists took them.

They got suspended w/o pay.

After 4 years of poor numbers against RHP,  his career history probably had as much to do with them letting him go than however much he struggled additionally in 2018 because of the home front. Even in his 'all-star' year in 2019 his OBP against RHP was 311 and he K'd at 30%. In addition, despite how well he throws, his Rdrs total for his last 4 yrs in Det was -10. I can fault them for not doing a better job replacing McCann, but not for letting him go rather than giving him a raise from $2.5 million

I didn't realize Rodon was 28, damn.  When I heard he didn't get tendered I thought he may be worth a flyer but for some reason I thought he was only like 25.  Didn't realize he was that old.

28 is too old on a one-year deal?  I'd take a flyer on the guy--he hasn't logged a ton of innings and worth the risk.
