Haven't camps been open in FL? Our intrepid Det sports media is apparently not interested - or maybe the team won't let them on the grounds?

I think they ended. And no AFL, so no more organized activity until Spring Training, besides winter ball.  Really hope this current surge is past us, and a readily accessible vaccine allows the season to take place as planned.

Sometime around 3rd week in Feb Pitchers and Catchers would be reporting? That is about 11 weeks from now? It will probably take all of that for the current surge to die out.

I think if they can start on 3/1, they’d still have enough practice to start the season on time.

Lou Gehrig pulled a "*****" and challenged Ty Cobb to a fight! This is from 1933.

In a little under 100 years we went from worrying about the probity of Sunday baseball to [insert thing that indicates our moral decline].  OTOH, we allow the clubhouse shoe shine guy to vote, eat in any restaurant he likes, and not have to tip his hat at the cops.

Fun fact about Lou Gehrig: 1933 was his worst season in the eleven years spanning 1927 through 1937.

His WAR in 1933 was 7.1.

This article brings to mind how our teacher in 8th grade made a mistake and then declared how he "had made a ***** of himself".

Yes, after the laughter had subsided, someone volunteered to him what we were laughing about.  He then chuckled and embarrassingly said, "yeah, I guess I did, didn't I?"  Way to roll with it, Mr. S.

I don't know what the numbers are, but it seems rare enough that a batter ever even reaches first on that 3rd-strike rule that nobody is even going to try in the middle of an AB. Maybe a guy like Billy Hamilton but that's about it.

I think the idea is maybe to reduce the number of pitches in the dirt when no one is on base and there is no risk.

It’s definitely rare to see the guy make it to first, but I think that rarity is due to it being available in a limited number of circumstances. If you make it available on ANY pitch, I think we’d see it far more (if pitchers didn’t alter their pitching).

Some Catchers won't like it. Those that use a more relaxed position when they have no throwing liability would lose that.

Love it

I guess I am missing what problem they are trying to find for this "solution".

Who knows. Tom tango’s polls often are directed to how people perceive various aspects of the game. I doubt there is any serious consideration to implementing this.

That said, I think one of the independent leagues (or something like that) experimented with a rule similar to this a few years ago.

What do you think would happen if a batter could take off for first after any pitch? I think pitchers would be a lot more cautious wasting pitches in the dirt. I think you would end up fundamentally changing the way pitchers pitch. Sinker/slider specialists probably perform worse. But I think it’s also true that the risk involved in making a pitch like that could make it more effective because hitters won’t be expecting it as much. And for the most part catchers are pretty good at blocking pitches.

I mostly just love it because Lee and Chas will hate it.

Is it a problem that pitchers "waste" pitches in the dirt? I think it's part of pitching and I don't really see a need to get rid of that.

While I agree, it would only be lost against burners who can't hit. Nobody els is going to even bother trying to run to 1st in the middle of an AB.

Morris always says the time to throw it in the dirt is up in the count with 2 stirkes. Batter can already run then.

Yeah, I am not seeing a good reason for it either.  Most batters won't try it anyway, but I don't think it adds anything.  I would rather they focus on things which I think need fixing: (1) game is getting too slow (2) not enough balls in play.
