I am shocked that they didn't protect Jason Foley. He's an easy rule 5 pick.

IDK, pitchers as far away as Foley (high A) are tough Rule 5s. I mean, if he doesn't have the wheels to pinch run and is not ready to get MLB outs what do you do with him? Rony Garcia had 100 IP at AA and I'm not sure we could have kept him if it had been a full season.

26 man roster means you can keep anyone. Especially if you don’t care about wins and losses.

yeah - but I thought we were the team that didn't care about wins and loses - who's the one that's going to pick him?

RP that throw 100 usually don't make it to rule 5. I wonder why Lange over him.

About the only thing you can say is that it pretty much has to be the judgment of the old regime carrying over as Hinch and Fetter probably haven't seen either of them pitch yet.

He has one elite pitch and a promising breaking ball. If his command comes around, and he's now two years from tj, he can be a stud.

But if you take him this year and you can't use him, you wipe out a year of his development and could put him right off track. No question it's still a tempting bet, but if he isn't ready enough to use him at all, everyone suffers - including the prospect.

He'll be 25, if he can throw strikes, he'll help.

well, maybe I'll amend my take to being that it's more likely he's chosen and then offered back instead of sticking.

at age 9 campos walked into a lumber yard and saw a group of trees yet to be felled.  he approached the largest tree and chopped it down with his bare hands.  as stunned long time lumbermen looked on in disbelief, he whittled the huge piece of wood into a baseball bat, burning his initials into its staff with the heat created from his own fingers moving so quickly.

Gold, Jerry, gold!!

Wenceel Perez is also eligible, but I don't think he'd break the system if he was chosen. I don't think he'll be picked, either.

What is the story with Lange?  I am not seeing anything in his stats or stories which make me think he's still an interesting prospect.

Great name

Rule 5 is so overrated here. If they lose Foley its no big deal

How many guys from recent rule 5 drafts have any kind of career? We have two #1 rule Vs in Reyes and Garcia and Reyes will probably stick in the league for a while and Garcia is still only a maybe. So sure, most teams are able to protect virtually everyone they need to. I think it's more about the potential embarrassment if you don't protect someone that hits than the overall impact of any losses to your team's development process - just because you know it is inevitable that some of the guys you did protect instead will wash out.

The best ever Rule 5 pick, famously, is Roberto Clemente, but Johan Santana, Josh Hamilton and George Bell were also Rule 5 picks that worked out pretty well. Definitely sixth sigma picks.

and it's probably getting harder by the year for guys to slip through the cracks in the scouting systems. What you are left with is probably just those few random chance late bloomers - of which there will probably always be a few - 6 sigma is about right.

No mention of Victor Reyes?

A good late bloomer example is Jose Bautista, but he didn't do anything for the team that drafted him in Rule 5.  They traded him for a bag of balls, and then he exploded.

That's four guys out of what 20 picks every year for 50 years? It's like thinking your gonna find something in round 31 of the traditional draft.

There is a reason most of these guys never got above A ball. If they were anything I doubt their own organization would have left them to flounder in Cedar Rapids.

There was probably not a little bit of racism involved with exposing Clemente in that draft. He was a black Puerto Rican who was considered lippy because he was very prideful, and it was the mid 1950s.

Not necessarily true, he's boom or bust. Players with a fastball like that always have a chance.

And if you look at the Rule 5 list for 2020 there are 18 more Foley's. Guys that throw hard with no control are a dime a dozen nowadays. No big deal.

Liston, what's the best way to get into Canada for your Rule V party?  I can either do a  bushwhack and you can meet me behind the abandoned barn or you can drive across the border and I get in your trunk.  How big is your trunk?

He was selected from the Brooklyn Dodgers in the rule 5.  Maybe the Dodgers just thought he wasn’t worth protecting as a player?  His AAA numbers weren’t all that impressive.
