2020-21 Off season

Wish I could have been at Kenny Rogers' 2006 ALDS game 3 or the Bonderman closeout game for that series with the amazing celebration.  That was such a long time coming for a baseball town crazy for its team.

The white towels looked amazing.

I was at the 1991 NFC Division playoff game against Dallas for the Lions.  Was about half full of tequila for the start of the game with my dad who was pretty much a non-drinker at that point.   We'd probably never had a drink together before or since.   I might have stroked out when they intercepted the Dallas QB in the first half.

If nobody tipped it was rough.

yeah - but the average route was $20/wk in the early 60's and that was real money then. Inflation came and the papers never made the carriers made whole and that was just one more contributing reason to why the system collapsed.

What happened here?

Replay reviews still suck.

Gotta love how we all get sidetracked,  we go from talking about deadening the baseball to talking about paper routes and the Lions.

At least when the Tigers sucked in the 90s and early 2000s, the Wings were really good, the Lions had Barry for the 1st part of that period, and then the Tigers got interesting just about the same time the Pistons took off.   And Michigan and Michigan State football were good too, along with Michigan state basketball.  College basketball is about the only thing worth a damn right now.

I was at the Kenny Rogers game 3. I remember when I first got the playoff tickets, it was for home playoff game #1 and it seemed all but certain that was going to be game 1 against Oakland. On the final day when they lost to the Royals, it seemed like this game was going to be a happy to be there situation. I went to playoff games after that game and the atmosphere just never was the same.

One of my favorite moments was when they played an anti ped commercial on the video board and everybody started chanting Giambi.

I remember watching game 4 with a bunch of friends at Mr. Bs in Royal Oak. My one friend got there in like the 3rd inning but was listening to the radio the whole time so he told us how Ernie was going to broadcast the 5th inning(may have been a diff one but 5th sounds right), so we all bribe the bartender to save our seats in a jammed pack Mr. Bs so we could go out to our cars to listen to Ernie one last time.   Such good times!

MLB reporting Robinson Cano is being suspended for 162 games next year for testing positive for the drug Stanozolol. Don’t know if this would include playoffs if the Mets get in.

I feel bad for those folks that never got to see Barry play in person.  It was electric.  It was amazing.  Every time he touched the ball the Silverdome went freaking nuts...even the opposing fans (Cheeseheads, etc.) would get excited.  He was one of a kind, never to be seen again.  The highlights are just awesome, but the in-person experience left my balls tingling.

I have only been to a few lions games overall but I was lucky enough to go in the fall of ‘94 against the patriots. He scored two TD’s and one of them always shows up on his highlight reels. He made some moves and the defender did a 360. It was amazing to see.

Stanozolol, there's a blast from the past.  That's a Ben Johnson drug from the 1980's.

My favorite Detroit sports moment is still the Wings winning for the first time.  We were out in Royal Oak and everyone was waving brooms around and high fiving each other (sans brooms).  It had been so long since the Wings had done anything, and the disappointment around the previous playoffs had been so strong that it seemed like they would never ever win anything.

I was too young for the Tigers in 84.  I remember it, but I was 13 and not old enough to appreciate it yet.

The Lions, of course, have never won ****.

Michigan in 89 was sweet and even better in 97.  The Fab Five was an awesome run.

The Bad Boy Pistons would be #2 for me behind the Wings.  The Going to Work Pistons a distant third because I thought they underachieved by only winning once and their story wasn't the sort of dramatic climb against the blue bloods of the NBA like the bad boys coupled with the rivalry with the NBA's chosen son in Michael Jordan.  The wings narrative (never winning and then being such a huge underdog to the East Coast chosen Flyers team + Yzerman) was a great story, the bad boys was a great story, the 2006 tigers if they had won would have been great too.

Yeah!  The one with the D Back who spins himself in two directions and digs himself a foxhole in the Dome's concrete floor.  Nobody else has ever made moves like Barry.  You are a lucky guy.

Once the pistons got Rodman it seemed like they never took a night off.... they had such consistent energy and focus.

and we had endzone seats so he ran right towards us.  I only went to two Lions games at the silverdome.  That one and Christmas '98 when we got destroyed by, i think the Broncos.  It was an afternoon game and my wife wasn't happy I went.  It was with family.  She was hosting the family at our house, first Christmas married.... I think we all got drunk in the parking lot before the game and were passed out by halftime.  Had a ticket connection and had seats on the 40 in the lower bowl.

It was Christmas ‘99. That was the only game I ever went to at the silverdome. It was definitely against the Broncos. I also seem to remember driving home after the game and hearing on the radio that the lions were still on track to clinch a playoff spot (or that they actually did clinch a playoff spot despite the loss). Not sure if that means you forgot the year you were married or that it wasn’t your first Christmas married.

Nah, that makes sense. I knew it was after I got married but before I had kids, so that's 98 and 99.   Wife wasn't happy at all I was going but it was actually her mom that said "Let him go and have fun." It certainly helped that it was her cousin that I was going with.

I had this experience once. My dad was a purchaser at Fisher Body and would occasionally get tickets from vendors. He got two ducats to the Thanksgiving game in 1980 and gave them to my brother and me. Seats were upstairs, first row, right next to the tunnel that came out right to the middle of the uprights.

The Lions had a big lead and blew it in the fourth quarter. They gave up the tying touchdown on the last play of regulation. Lions kicked off in overtime and the Bears returner cut through a bunch of guys and made his way along the sidelines. He was running right towards us and by the time he got to the 50 it was obvious he was going to score. By the time he crossed the goal line my brother and I had already gotten up and were walking out through the tunnel while the boos cascaded down.

It was a very Lions loss.

Hate to break up the Lions talk but Brandon Dixon is going to play in Japan so that now leaves 4 open spots on the 40 man.
