Sorry, can someone remind me - everyone effectively loses one farm team for next year, yes?

So which level got lost? I don't know this stuff as well as you chaps.

Well, let's start with where things were.  I know you're not a stranger to the forum, and I don't mean to talk over your knowledge, so forgive me if that seems to be the case.

Affiliated minor league ball (those leagues with teams that were associated with major league teams) consisted of R (rookie), foreign rookie, SA (short A), A, advanced A, AA, and AAA levels, going in order of lowest level to highest level.  Each MLB had one affiliate in AAA and one affiliate in AA.  That will remain the same going forward, although some locations of teams may be shifted around depending upon how these leagues are going to be set up.

There had been 2 AAA leagues, the International League on roughly the eastern side of the country, and the Pacific Coast League with teams in the western 2/3 of the states.

There had been 3 AA leagues, the Eastern League, the Southern League, and the Texas League.  These leagues were pretty much in the geographies of their names, although the Texas League had teams outside of Texas.

The other 5 levels is where there was some randomness among affiliations.  There wasn't a consistency of number of affiliations within each level.

Here is a list of 2019 affiliates per bbref (remember, no minor leagues for 2020).  You can see how the above lined up.

MLB now wants to have direct authority of MILB (right, wrong, or indifferent) and reduce and regulate the number of affiliates per team.  In the past, MLB teams had some sort of authority with working relationships with minor league teams, and contracts were recently up for negotiations every 2 or 4 years (might have been only one of those or both, I'm not sure).  Criteria such as ballpark capacity were to be observed, and minor leagues had to approve of those locations being included in their league structure.

So now with the streamlining of minor league affiliates, MLB wants to limit its to teams to only one team per level.  This is going to cut out around 42 current minor league organizations from having a direct working relationship with a MLB team.  These minor league orphans can try to keep on keeping on as independent teams.

And along with the restructured one to one relationships will be realignments of these teams within these leagues based on geography to cut down on travel.

So, specifically for Detroit, AA Erie has been rumored to be on the cut list.  But Detroit will have to replace this team (or move its AA operations if you prefer).  Advanced A Lakeland may change its league affiliation, but because Detroit has its spring training operations there, Lakeland is likely to stay within the Detroit minor league operations in some league or another.

Oh yeah that's true. I meant we don't know which teams are gonners yet and who is going where. It's not like they came out and said we're eliminating this level so all those teams in the Carolina league, fore xample, are gone.

In the old world against Microsoft days, we used to call that spreading FUD - Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt. An essential tactic to freeze other actors so you can swoop in with your 'solution' later once you've finished it.

thanks for all that

IMO that Lakeland is guaranteed to stay as a Tiger affiliate - the size and history and investment assure that.

Not a big deal I think if it is moved from High A to Low A, though I don't see the logic right now

According to the Baseball Digest article 1776 posted earlier:

Quote

Why move the Cal League to Low A from High A? Purely to make the numbers across all of Minor League Baseball. There’s only room for six teams when all the other High-A slots are filled, so the decision was made to shift the Northwest League—which will be filled by affiliates of West Coast MLB teams—to High A. This is also the rationale for moving the Midwest League to High A and the Florida State League to Low A.

We will also see some gymnastics in the High-A level, partly to address travel and partly to address existing ownership situations and affiliations. Some teams, like the Chicago White Sox and the Baltimore Orioles, want to maintain their existing affiliation structures; the White Sox, in fact, will likely see no changes to its full-season affiliates.

It would have been neat to see West Michigan become the Double-A team. It would be rewarding for Tigers fans to be able to pop over and and see their top prospects live at that level, as opposed to having to go all the way to Erie or even to Trenton if they wanted to do that. Seems as though driving down costs as low as possible (for travel, particularly) is a top priority, though, and the Midwest has already been designated a High-A league, so that's pretty unlikely at this point.

What league is West Michigan gonna play in if they move to AA? Eastern league?

The point is to reduce travel.

Too many people looked at this under the current mindset of "Oh we're losing X team, let's just move up Y" That's not the way this is working. Think radically and all new.

I did. If you point was to disqualify your entire post with your second part than why make it at all?

There is nothing wrong with wishing something could be so because it would be good for fans and then stating that it won't be that way because of money.

Ha ha. WTF? Did they know about this when hiring him?

Didn't something like this happen to him in St. Louis as well? What a piece of ****.

I liked them quote tweeting the finalists for Manager of the Year and congratulating Renteria on being a finalist just days after they fired him.  I know those team accounts are probably just ran by lower level employees but I just found that to be hilarious.

This is Tony La Russa’s second DUI charge. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor DUI in 2007 after he fell asleep at traffic light in Florida. This arrest occured in Arizona. A White Sox spokesman said the organization was aware of the incident.

I try so hard to like the White Sox. They have such a fun, young team.

One step forward, two steps back. What a **** owner.

I would like to see the Tigers take a run at J.T. Realmuto. Yeah, I know we got burned on a 5/110 with Zimmermann, and Realmuto will cost about that much. Realmuto is decidedly not Zimmermann, who was flashing big warning signs after 2015 for anyone who cared to notice them.

Realmuto is not only the best FA available, but the best catcher in the game right now at a time we are bringing up at least three of the top starting pitching prospects in the game. He is a solid framer, pitch blocker and runner-controller, easily a top five defensive catcher overall; and you can make a good case that he's the best offensive catcher in the game. Given that the top of the catcher chain in our system is Grayson Greiner, and that Jake Rogers is increasingly looking like a defensive backup, I see nothing internally that should block us from getting J.T. on board.

We may not be one of Realmuto's top destinations, but I'd be disappointed if we didn't take a run at him.
