The Tigers have agreed to a contract with free-agent right-hander Julio Teheran, per Jon Heyman of MLB Network. It’s a non-guaranteed deal, though Teheran will earn a $3MM base salary if he makes the Tigers’ roster. He could rake in another $1MM in incentives if he starts 20 games for the team.

Teheran was awful last year, but he missed time in the summer with Covid.  Overall, not too bad for a one year innings eater, not a lot different from Porcello.

He had a fluke 373 BABIP last year.  Hes projected at his norm of 310 or so...less than 10 hits/9, with a good BB rate, and a fairly good K/BB rate.

He's projected to be a 1.5 - 2 WAR guy for 150 IP, which is pretty decent for a back-end starter, especially on a non playoff team.   If they we're looking to tank, they would not acquire him, IMO.

in 3 of the last 4 seasons he's given up over 10 hits per 9.  that's awful.

its not a fluke.  its because he is not a good starting pitcher.  i get that being healthy is a skill in some ways, but that's really the only skill he has left, and he's getting older.

look, if you want a guy who will be able to pitch every 5 days and will give up 4 or 5 runs a game, you got your man.  but im not sure why you need to spend $10 million on rick porcello to give you what a minor league free agent could.

He was undefeated last season when the Angels scored in double digits.

Wily Peralta yesterday.  Julio Teheran today.  My goodness, should I put the Christmas tree back up?

I don't care how much money these guys cost.  It's not like they would have spent it on somebody good.

Kinda crazy that Maybin has stuck around for 15 seasons now, also hard to believe he's still only 33.

Yeah it's crazy to think that Porcello is only 2 years older than Boyd.

Hits per 9 is a poor, poor way to evaluate a pitcher. A pitcher who can miss bats; k/9, minimize runners; bb/9, and keep the ball on the ground is a good pitcher. Those are things a pitcher can control.

odd thing with Teheran is that his BB/9 took a step up after 2017. Seems a little odd for a guy's command to get worse with more reps. There doesn't seem to be much change in his pitch usage to explain it. I wonder if he has begun to nibble more as his FB as lost it's top end? He was touching 95 in 2017, by late 2019 was topping out at 92. Zimmermann Part Deux, but happily without the Zimmermann size commitment.

Porcello can't miss bats, minimize runners or keep the ball on the ground, either.
