"mentor prospects" is probably the most overrated thing in baseball.  they say that stuff to justify signing a bad, older player.

not the "Kenny Rogers" type I was expecting.  Or hoping for.  If he comes on board, hopefully he get's the Fetter treatment.

I’ll believe they’re interested in him only after he’s signed. This is probably Al pretending the org is looking for help-PR move. A distraction until the ST games get underway.

Covid adds a lot of factors we haven't experienced in the past, so another veteran starter would be worth the money on a one year contract. I don't know if that's Porcello or someone else but I would prioritize that as an important part of this year's team.

We know there will be injuries at some point and I'd rather not put a stressful workload on our young players this year.

fo sho.  given where we're heading, go for quantity at this point.  The young guys probably won't go over 100 innings this year.

He was not terrible last year.  He had a 8.2 K rate (Nova has not been anywhere close to that for years), 2.3 BB rate and 0.8 HR rate.  He's not good, but he's a different level of bad than Nova.

he was terrible.  11.3 hits allowed per 9!

yeah - 2020 in NYC was not his finest hr, but his whip was pretty much at his career average in 2019 when he was on the mound for 18 Boston wins. He still not that old and has not lost anything off his FB (such as it is). The big difference with the Mets was that he went from throwing 4 pitches to throwing 3. Maybe for a guy who does not have great stuff that was a mistake. Or maybe the curve was hurting his arm. I guess that is the biggest question I would want an answer about before signing him: - why did he stop throwing his curve?

He had a better FIP than Taijuan Walker.

I agree with Tigermojo2 and with G2. With Covid, and the messed up innings thrown in 2020, I want someone that can throw lots on innings. Assuming no significant arm damage, Porcello sounds worthwhile. Not expecting greatness. I am expecting lots of injuries all across MLB.

There are statistical outcomes that are projectable, repeatable and over which the pitcher has control. K rate and BB rate are two of those, hits per 9 is not.

yeah yeah.  neither did ivan nova and what happened with him?  pitchers are notoriously injury prone and porcello has lots of miles on that arm.  it would not surprise me at all if he's injured this year.

porcello has been getting worse since his fluke stolen cy young season.  he gives up more hits than almost every pitcher in the league and he was turrible last year.

look, if were still tanking, this is a great signing.  nobody else wants him so he should be cheap and he's a terrible pitcher so were going to continue to lose lots of games.

huzzah for rick porcello.

He had a fluke 373 BABIP last year.  Hes projected at his norm of 310 or so...less than 10 hits/9, with a good BB rate, and a fairly good K/BB rate.

He's projected to be a 1.5 - 2 WAR guy for 150 IP, which is pretty decent for a back-end starter, especially on a non playoff team.   If they we're looking to tank, they would not acquire him, IMO.

My question about all the arms being signed.  Is this Hinch and Fetter doing homework?
