exactly.

my only caveat in defense of Al is that the team may have told him not to spend any money.

Could be but it will cost Chrissy much mire if he wants Correa or Baez or similar.

i was speaking to the prospects mentioned in the quote.

OK, I still stand by my point....I will change my mind about Chris if AA is allowed to acquire a couple of guys to play C and LF at least at the same level and general price range as Schoop and Cron last year.

i think you are probably right that illitch has put the kibosh on any more spending, but i dont really know.

i imagine that if illitch said "go for it", then Al would spend like a drunken sailor.

I am on fluoxetine; everything is bright and shiny… except the Tigers. They are still depressing. 😢

Another possibility is all those guys told Avila to take a hike, I'm not interested.

I was just pointing out that there were 7 MLers from that group who got a lot of playing time, while acknowledging that 2 of them sucked.

It was the Randy Smith era.  The default was set to sucked.

I’d rather have LaStella than Profar.  Hope is still alive.

Just glancing at them, I could see an argument for either player being preferable.  Profar is younger and has been more versatile defensively.  La Stella has a better hitting resume.  One thing that sticks out is that La Stella has been purely a bench player throughout his career whereas Profar has had a couple of seasons of more full time work (throwing out 2020, which, I don't know how it can be evaluated numerically).  Does La Stella's bat suffer with more playing time?

I guess at this point La Stella is more preferable since he is a free agent and Profar is not.

Castellanos DFA.

He have play 1st base.

After looking at the arc of Candelario's performance last season I'm not as sanguine about not needed to be ready to replace him at 1b.  You know Avila or Ilitch  is Boras' first call.

The more I see the names associated with the Tigers the more more I am convinced we are not contending for at least another decade. Like we're in for 1989-2005 again.    I don't think Chris is ever going to spend any money to improve this team.    If the big pitching prospects work out (if you hit 50% success rate, you're doing an amazing job),  they are going to be bad for a very long time.     I want the Illitch family to sell the team.     I think you aim for a a couple of really good players now - so maybe you can help your young pitchers win.   If you just surround these guys with crap then I don't think they are ever going to be good.   I mean Jason Castro?  Mitch Moreland?   Come on.........

Dave Dombrowski is part of a group trying to bring baseball to Nashville  (Hello Nashville Rays?,  Nashville A's?).     I wish he was fronting a group that wanted to buy the Tigers.

They never had a collection of prospects from 1989-2005 like they have now.  I am not particularly optimistic about the team overall, but there are some real prospects to get excited about.  Plus, we are entering a new era where a mediocre team will be able to legitimately contend for the playoffs.  I don't think that's a good thing for baseball, but it does help a weak franchise contend and once you are in the post-season tournament anything is possible.

I wonder what this does going forward.

I guess, first, what will the playoffs be going forward?  I don't think we are at that understanding yet.  Is this something that is in the CBA?  I know last season was all about on the fly adjustments.

But I agree with you that about the potential watering down and just getting into the postseason.

Here's something that just struck me.  This expanded playoffs (which I don't necessarily have a problem with in these goofy shortened seasons) .... is this a convenient ramp up to when they expand and want to go to 4 team divisions (just my guess) and they inevitably have division winners with barely above .500 records or even below .500 records?

The expanded playoff was not a result of the shortened season.  They already reached an agreement with TV to add another round of playoffs before the pandemic.  I don't think it's going to be 16 teams.  It sounds like it will be 14.

I know there had been talk of it prior to, but I thought it was agreed upon because of the pandemic.  Partly because of the pandemic (shortened season and even good teams can succumb to a losing short sample size), but mostly because money.
