Btw add Whitey Ford to the list of Hall of Fame deaths this year joining Kaline, Seaver, Brock and Gibson.   Just a terrible year.

Damn. Gayle Sayers recently passed too. All are star players from my youth.

It might be a good idea to see if they can get a sure thing in next year's great free agent class of shortstops rather than roll the dice with an international player.  It depends on their budget though.  If they are not planning to spend big on elite players, then taking a chance on a less expensive player with a big upside might be the way to go.

After watching a lot of KBO this year on ESPN, he was one of the best players in the league. KBO really fits into my schedule, since I get off of work at 3:00 a.m.

Any guesses on what it would take to get him?

Great trivia question. They really were the good old days.

The top player in the Korea Baseball Organization will soon be available to major league clubs.

Kiwoom Heroes shortstop Ha-Seong Kim, who ranked as the No. 1 prospect in the KBO in May, will be posted after the season, according to Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors. Kim, who is in his seventh KBO season and turns 25 next week, will be exempt from the international bonus pools, meaning he can sign a major league contract without restrictions. A righthanded hitter, Kim ranks ninth in the league in OBP and 11th in slugging, batting .310/.401/.531 with 28 home runs, 69 walks, 60 strikeouts and 21 stolen bases in 22 attempts through 576 plate appearances.

Can he play LF?

20 million for the posting fee, and about 7-8 million per year for the player.

Perfect. Right in just about every other team's budget.

Posting fee is done as a percentage of the overall deal now.

I don't know why people keep trying to give us a shortstop this offseason. A) it's clear they are gonna try Castro there B) there are approx 18 good ones available in 2021.

Given the unknowns I don't see Al in play for him at all

If by "him" you mean "common sense" and "progressive ideas", I agree.

If B) was going to happen this year then A) wouldn't matter.  They could move him to a different position.  I do agree though that waiting until next year makes the most sense.

I think conversations between Avila and Chris I go something like this:

Al: Hello, Chris

Chris: Hi Al, how are things?

Al: Great, thanks!

Chris: What can I do for you, old buddy?

Al: Thanks for asking -- I was thinking....

Chris: Does it involve spending?

Al: Uh....a bit

Chris: ehhhh

Al: How about lunch?

Chris: You buying again?

Al: Always!

Chris: We are such a team

right but that's kind of the point. They can try him at Shortstop in another year where we are gonna try to lose. If he commits too many errors, there are about 18 better than anyone this year and then they can move Castro to 2nd. If Castro sticks, then they don't need to sign a SS and can go after another position.

Neither is the "he will spend" trope. All we do know is that he hasn't yet and has shown no signs that he will. So people are going to continue to make that assumption, as they should, until he does. This isn't that hard.

If he keeps the team, he'll eventually spend. If he's looking to sell, he won't. And none of us know which it will be.

I disagree with your take. If he won't spend we wouldn't have guys like Cron, Schoop et all. We would have just rolled with what we had in house.

I think it goes without saying that he will spend a little. That isn't really spending and not what people mean by saying he "won't spend money". They mean real money on impactful players. Sure, he'll take a chance on a few low-budget FA's. We'll still have a payroll well below-average and that's with Miggy's huge contract.

That isn't spending.

It's what Sabertooth meant that I quoted. He's said it several times.

I agree that there is zero evidence that Chris I. won’t spend, and frankly, it’s a lazy take.  For better or worse, the Tigers have said they will commit to spend when they are ready to contend.  Based on my assessment, the next offseason would be the appropriate time,  with one more season of data, we should know what we have in Candy, JaCoby, Paredes and Willi.  Greene and the Tork will be closer, and hopefully others will emerge. Use free agency at that point to fill in any gaps.

COVID is also a problem—for a team in a rebuild, it messed with our minor leaguers development and we also don’t know if fans will be allowed to attend games next season.  If I ran a business, I’d be hesitant to throw out any lucrative, guaranteed contracts if I was concerned about my ability to generate revenue to offset that expense.

Very true but isn't it still about acquiring talent and if an opportunity is presented we should move on it. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush kind of thing. Maybe by 2021 there isn't so many  shortstops available if they resign etc or Candelerio regresses Castro can play third etc, etc.

That's pretty much my take too, unless a stud young FA at a position of need is available for longer-term, which doesn't seem to be the case.

It's all about roster/payroll management.

It's silly to go sign Didi to a billion dollars with well this might happen, and this, and this, or this. They'll play castro at SS next year and if doesn't work then you decide what to do. It's silly to pay now for lesser talent that might not be needed or when its reasonable to think better upgrades will exist in 12 months.

It would be a different discussion if there were even comparable Shortstops this year. But, in 2021 Didi would rank about as the 18th best guy available.

Wrong.  If I meant that joke in an absolute literal sense, the way you interpreted it, then I would assume that their payroll would be zero.  Yoda understood what that joke meant perfectly.
