2020-21 Off season

Recommended Posts

DH – Miggy; $30M is the only current money Tigers need to pay in 2021

C – If they bring back Romine, that’s 4 backups (with Haase, Greiner, and Rogers). Can go with those 4 (or 3) for a year. Dingler has 0 pro Abs bats, so best case for him is mid-2022. Realmuto makes little sense; Keibert Ruiz would be an interesting (and difficult) piece to add.

1b – Tork’s long-term home. Like Dingler, 0 pro ABs, so a late season cup of coffee and an early 2022 call-up is still very aggressive. Could keep Candelario here, but he is better at 3b than 1b, and probably better than Tork at 3b. Cron would be fine; would be nice to see Al get creative and trade for unwanted contract like Ian Desmond or Brandon Belt (with assets attached). If no NL DH, Dom Smith (Mets) might be available.

2b – Willi Castro’s long term home? I really hope the Tigers know if Willi can play SS. If he cannot, move him to 2b. Parades at Toledo playing 3b and 2b. Might be a good problem to have soon.

SS – Owners are already crying poor. I don’t think the Tigers can get a bargain, but they may not have to overpay for Semein or Gregorious. Simmons is an option, but huge risk as his defense is already no longer elite. Can go with Willi at SS and then look again next Winter, but those 5 SS are all elite. Tigers appear to be very adept at shifting so maybe it will be Willi, with 2b filled by lots of current Tigers (or Schoop for a year).

3b – Candelario’s long term home. + Tork, Parades, Workman, Qunitana, Lipcius and Colt Keith makes 3b an actual position of strength? That is crazy

LF – Need trade or free agent that can actually help. No real reason to think Stewart will turn it around. Maybe Parades bumps Willi here in 2022 if they get a SS. Deeper down, Bryant Packard and Daniel Cabrera.

CF – Parker Meadows long term home 2023 and beyond? Jones is decent and unlucky the last few years. But he is 29 with 3 years of control and basically a good bench player. Reyes is the same on a winning team. Switch hitter with speed who can play all 3 positions. But lack of BBs and power limits value in modern game. Daz fits in here and in RF, but I think they get him some ABs in Toledo first.

RF – Riley Greene’s long term home mid 2022 and beyond. Until then, Daz or Reyes or vet short term.

Bench – H Castro is versatile. Goodrum should not be starting; but he, Alcantara and Zack Short can all play SS, so they have some decent choices. No Jordy Mercers please. Bonifacio, Hill, Dermeritte and Dixon have shown very little to even justify a 40-man roster spot.

Tigers can fake it in the infield with what they have or with some simple one year fixes. But the OF is awful; thru FA or trade, they need a real upgrade.

Pitching:

Turnbull - not to sound like Lynn Henning, but I would look to trade Spencer if they can get a ML ready SS (Gimenez?) or CF (Marsh, Waters?)

Pitcher Addition - free agent or trade, a real addition is needed

Fulmer - if the scouts or the analytics guys see something, then bring him back; but looks done to me

Boyd - keep him and look for a lot of innings that are acceptable

Skubal - looks solid

Norris - make him a starter, even if he is never getting past the 5th (or the 4th)

Alexander - fills Norris's long lefty role nicely

Mize (and Manning and Faedo) - probably start in Toledo, but if healthy all should get lots of time in Detroit

B Garcia, Farmer, Jimenez, Cisnero, Soto - an OK start to good bullpen, though I would not mind moving on from Joe

Burrows, Funk, Castro, Lange, Hess, Blackwood, Chiang, Foley - bullpen will offer lots of openings thru the year for these guys

Rodriguez and Agarzal (if healthy) - decent spot starters

R Garcia, Shore, Richan - other Toledo starters

Wentz - who knows?

F Perez - who knows??

Skubal may be the starter with the least expected variation, so they need to sign a free agent that can actually help.

hopefully they dont waste a roster spot on another old, bad, starting pitcher based solely on the belief he will "provide innings and stability."

no more ivan novas please.

The only free agent SP I’d want is Trevor Bauer.  Unfortunately, so will every other team.  The others have injury/question marks.  For the position players, I like both Springer and Brantley, though I wouldn’t give the latter more than 1-2 years.

i'd love springer, but he'll cost too much.  he's got red sox written all over him.

Brantley is the perfect fit for the 2021 champion Detroit tigers.

There’s an entire offseason for changes but are there any indications the front office sees anything different than the current model of Tork at 3B, Willi at SS, and Jeimer at 1B?

Don't forget leadership.

Actually I do think an older Kenny Rogers type can be good to have around with a bunch of young pitchers, but we can just as easily live without.

That's a phrase that has outlived its time, since people can literally do that nowadays.

I think if Jaimer is still around, he's at 3B with Tork at 1B. Probably a better fit for both players. They're trying to make Tork a 3B in case Candy didn't work out but that's looking to be less the case.

This years free agency freeze might bring opportunity for some team to strike fast and get a discount on a cornerstone player or two. Springer, Lemahieu and  Realmuto  might be more affordable than usual. We should try for one them and if still too pricey consider Brantley or Pederson on short term contracts. As always it comes down to the value/$ but we should try to add one significant piece to our puzzle this off season.

Correct.  That's when all of 4 the guys that I listed are FA.

Stroman will also be in demand. Then it is into flawed candidates.

Smyly Ray and Porcello are actually decent options.

Kluber is 35 and coming off injury, a bad combo, be he was more sturdy than JV for 6 years. It is true of him and a dozen guys, if they are healthy, they could help. Paxton, Walker, Odorizzi, Minor, Quintana.

Hopefully Avila will have someone else make decisions for FA; he has not done well.

I would like Verlander or Scherzer back in 2022,  in the coveted Kenny Rogers role.  Porcello is still too young.  It's a shame he broke down--given how young he was when he started his career, he was on pace for at least 250 career wins, if he averaged 14-15 per season.
