I hope they hire Hinch so all of the people who claim they'll never root for cheaters are forced to root for the Tigers with a "cheater" running the team.

I hope they follow that up by hiring Alex Cora as their first base coach.  ****, make Barry Bonds the hitting coach.

Kenny Rogers as pitching coach?

Witness Verlander, Justin

He's gotten on his moral horse plenty of times over things like this but this time it's just "Well, I was new....."

There was also the Roberto Osuna (accused of assaulting his wife) trade to Houston which he was kind of speechless about in spite of harsh criticism of a former Tiger minor leaguer that was accused of the same.

Then there was no need to be critical of the minor leaguer.  He was in the same organization, and who knows, could have eventually been teammates somewhere down the road.

2004/2005 were huge incremental jumps.  I feel like we are in a place consistent with that.   Good pitching is coming.  Need to augment with some real star FA signings to give it all credibility.

This year wasn't a big jump?

2004: .444
2005: .438

2019: .290
2020: .423

Going 4-2 this week gives them a better record than the 2005 team.

This is a crazy jump considering how awful the starting pitching has been.  Maybe the shorter season has something to do with it?

My man.  "Consistent with"...was my non-specific, eyes only, too-lazy-to-look-it-up, wag at where we were.  I think we are consistent with the jump from dog food level 2003 to almost respectable 2004.

Last year after 60 Det was 23-37. I think if they played a full season, given injuries, they'd lose 100 again.

It depends upon how old school they want the pitching staff to get.

Assuming we lose most of our SP and three starting position players (Cron, Jones, Goodrum) for extended periods, yes.

Any thoughts of a preemptive strike for Andrelton Simmons, Realmuto or Springer if discounts are to be had after this low revenue Covid year ?

I'd stay away from Simmons as a 31-year-old shortstop.  The other two are more interesting, although they are also getting close to the age where you don't want to get tied to a big contract.  It depends on their budget.  There are some star players potentially available after 2021 that are young enough where you wouldn't be too concerned about a long-term deal.

Cron and Schoop were great additions.   We need to add a couple more bona-fide MLB FAs in the offseason to leaven the bread that is still rising.

How were they between July 24 and Sep 22 last year?

I counted the wins only and that was 16 wins.

Whether they would have made a big jump over 162 games probably depends on what their rookies did over a full-season.  Since they want to limit the innings of Mize and  Skubal, I think their pitching staff would destroy them over 162 games.  And it doesn't seem that Paredes and Cameron are ready.  So, I think they would be a 100-loss team or close to it.

I really don't care what our record is next year, as long as it's a true developmental season, like this one has been.  Unfortunately, we only got 60 games.  Without looking at the free agent list, I'd like to snag a very good SS and and corner OF to play the role of Pudge and Magglio.  Maybe a stopgap 1B for one season, until the Tork is ready.  We can't do this 100% via the farm.

Here's your 2021 Tigers, bitches...

C Rogers/Haase/Greiner (keeping the chest protector warm for Kid Diggler)

1B Free Agent stop gap

2B Paredes/W. Castro

SS Free Agent

3B Candelario

LF Free Agent

CF J. Jones

RF Cameron

DH Cabrera (because we have to)

Bench:  Catcher, Castro/Paredes, Reyes and I don't care so much

Good ol' loser mentality.

People thought the 2006 team was still 2 years away as well.

Hire a guy who can lead them to the WS. That needs to be the goal. Not "eh, this guy is good enough for now". We did that 3 years ago.

I agree with this. In June 1979, they hired Sparky Anderson instead of keeping who they had because he was "familiar."  They got the guy they wanted to win with, even if it took 5 years to do so. I want the same approach now. If that guy is available in the off -season, grab him.

if avila is "all about the analytics" now, then he'll go out and get a manager who is too.

The Tigers were 23-35 in their first 58 games last year. If they go 1-5 this week, they'll tie it.

Wins are worth more in a shorter season, but so are losses.

I hope they do make an investment or two.   FA SP in particular.   The point that was made about our kid pitchers not being able to pitch a full season's worth of innings is a good one.  Verlander was limited in 2006 as I recall.

Absolutely does. But we'd have said that in 2006 if it was only 60 games.

Sure. But we don't know that. All I'm saying is it would be stupid to go with another warm body because we think we're still 4 years out. We had a ton of issues in 2005 as well.
