To me it seems like other players were more outspoken and offended by this scandal. Knowing if a pitch is going to be a FB or offspeed is such a huge advantage.

I'd wager a very healthy majority of players who were taken aback and vocal would have said nothing, if not actively participated in the cheating, had it only been their team been involved.

Witness Verlander, Justin

He's gotten on his moral horse plenty of times over things like this but this time it's just "Well, I was new....."

I don't really see the parallel with Chelios. The hate for Chelios was the flipside of the respect for his effectiveness as an opponent. That said, the team could hire Simon Legree and the fans would cheer when he takes out a line-up card. But I'll still wager an internet beer Avila isn't even going to look at Hinch.

The only reason I brought his name up was because it was pure hatred, like a Laimbeer level, and to show, like Seinfeld said "We root for the jerseys, not the person".   Detroit is no different than NYY fans cheering for former Red Sox players.

right. But OTOH,  isn't fan hatred a kind of faux hatred? Sort of a 'There's sports and then there's real life" thing? For instance I think of comparing my response to Chelios vs Ndamukong Suh. Suh was a Lion and I still rooted for the DL to make plays, but I still thought he was an embarrassment for being a total jerk even though he was on my team, I never felt that way about Chelios for having been a Black Hawk who was hard to play against.

It's going to be Lloyd McClendon.

He's got experience as a manager

He knows the players very very well

The players like him

He knows the prospects

Al is very familiar with him.

According to Gardy, he's really into the sabermetrics now.

I know it's not the sexy pick, but it's the sensible one right now.   I think they should just give him a 2 year offer and take the Interim off the title before the last game.

I too think it'll be Lloyd

Actually it's the smart move...........Tessio was always smarter.......

They gave us some good moments in this strange year, but they are still at least 2 years away from doing anything meaningful - might as well stick with a guy that they like.

Good ol' loser mentality.

People thought the 2006 team was still 2 years away as well.

Hire a guy who can lead them to the WS. That needs to be the goal. Not "eh, this guy is good enough for now". We did that 3 years ago.

2004/2005 were huge incremental jumps.  I feel like we are in a place consistent with that.   Good pitching is coming.  Need to augment with some real star FA signings to give it all credibility.

It will not be Lloyd McClendon...You cannot sell that to this fanbase in year 5 of the rebuild.

The guys who can lead them to a World Series are available after 2021.  Great free agent crop.

Any thoughts of a preemptive strike for Andrelton Simmons, Realmuto or Springer if discounts are to be had after this low revenue Covid year ?

if its Lloyd, they would need to generate some excitement with some free agents, that were real long term pieces

yeah - that is part of the issue with Lloyd. I have no idea how he is in private but his public persona is kind of 'hang dog'. He is just not a real 'up' kind of guy like Gardenhire or Leyland. Clearly some guys make that work - Joe Torre would be an example. But for a team that needs all the help it can get regaining fan interest I'd have to assume there is (or should be!) a preference for a 'brigher' personality to be the face.

I don't think they care about that.  I don't want Lloyd, but agree he will likely be the pick.

Don Kelly!!!!!!!!!!!

you don't see that many guys who seem to be such a consensus pick as a future manager as Kelly. The caution comes because they had been saying the same things about Ausmus.  :dead:

Hiring Lloyd would be a gigantic middle finger to your fanbase that's already skeptical on ownership and management. I know managers don't matter but they don't need continuity and someone tied to the ongoing losing.
