If the team isn't going to compete for the playoffs than winning or losing is irrelevant to me, what i get my enjoyment out of is watching or hoping for progression from young players that could be part of your future.

yeah, that is how a lot of fans feel today.  I am not saying they are wrong, but I don't think it has always been that way. Fans used to feel some pride in their team if their team finished 3rd rather than eighth. Now, I don't think fans give a **** if their team finishes first.  They will consider the season a failure if they lose in the playoffs.

Agreed, I don’t see how a 75 win team is more interesting or fun to watch than a 65 win team. That’s basically once every two weeks that the team loses a game instead of winning.

For this season, it’s been interesting to see  some of the bullpen guys emerge. The kid pitchers have had their moments, both good and bad, but their performance is worth following. Watching Jeimer and Reyes become productive players is fun. Those players could still end up winning you something in the 60s because of the other pieces involved.

Yes, this year has been more fun than 2017-2019 which is kind of my point.

In a normal season of 162 the longer the team is in contention/relevant the better and that should always be the goal of management to provide the fans a whole summer of fun. Not just opening day and draft day.

2004 and 2005 were fun to you?

Actually, yeah....there was some young up-and-coming anticipation, and it was an interesting collection of players.  I would of course prefer to be the Toronto Blue Jays of 2018-2019...as surprising as the 2006 Tigers were, compared to Toronto's fairly predictable success in 2020, nebertheless it seemed clear to me in 2005 that the combination of Mr. I and DD were moving in this team and the right direction.   I have absolutely zero confidence in Chris I and AA.

Toronto is currently doing it the way you're supposed to do it with a lot of young talent... Unfortunately we don't have the organizational capacity to develop that much young talent.... So I would absolutely settle for spending some money to fill the gaps.....but that aint gonna happen here either.

I have no faith....at this point I'll just take an entertaining team however they can build it.  I cant see a 60 win team being entertaining.  I can see a 70+ win team as entertaining....depends on a lot of things...its not so much about the number of wins....but the number of wins coincides with the things that make it more entertaining.

I'll probably focus on minor league teams as you suggest.

Yes, teams with more wins usually have some interesting things happening that lead to those wins.  When a team loses 100 games, there usually isn't anything interesting happening.  If all you care about is the playoffs, then nothing is interesting unless you make the playoffs, but I can't follow the game that way.

Right.... I will definitely settle for playoff competitive most of the time, and making the playoffs some of the time...I dont have numerical thresholds or anything formal...I just want the sense that the owner and GM can get it done and are moving in that direction, and are in fact competitive most of the time.

No 5 year mega losing BS, no giant rebuilds.  Just a good adaptive approach to finding, acquiring, developing, and assembling good talent and a good team.  Thats what good owner/GM duos do.

Teams that win 60-70 games don't have interesting story lines, but teams with 70-80 wins sometimes do.Teams with 80-85 wins are mediocre.  95 wins is always fun, even when the team goes 2-8 over a stretch and are blowing it.

There have been 2.5 years of mega-losing heading into this season so you should be alright for another year or so.

With the news of expanded playoffs and signs of life from some of this team’s younger players, the mega-losing is probably over for the time being.

With Candy's mega-resurgence this year, Jones suddenly learning how to hit a little, Reyes emerging as a decent option, and the surprisingly decent BP, you are probably mega-right, barring mega injuries.

hate the expanded playoffs after this year tho

They are also likely keeping the runner at second base to start extra innings which is probably the lamest rule change in the history of the game.

yeah, that is pretty stupid.  I thought that ghost runners were limited to whiffle ball.

Have they already confirmed this?

I'd like to say it pisses me off, but how many extra inning games a year does a team have? 5? It's probably not a huge deal. I don't like it but whatever.

Manfred said that they are probably keeping it because fans like it more than they thought they would.  He threw one of those "people are saying" in there.  Every time I hear him talk, he sounds like he is full of **** which is of course part of the reason why the owners chose him.
