I believe this is the full and infamous 9-7 quote. It doesn't expressly state 9-7 not being good enough, but firing a HC after he goes 9-7 says it for you.

“Our record was above average — 9-7 the last two years — but our record against the better teams in the league has not been that good.”

that team was not good.  that 9-7 season was all about stafford in the 4th quarter.  i think they had 8 4th quarter comebacks that year?

the lions had their shot when they had suh, calvin, stafford, fairley, tulloch, quin, and levy on the squad.  all close to or at their prime.  and jim schwartz went 4-12 and 7-9 with them.  that was their shot.  by the time they went 9-7 with quinn as gm that team was no more and was no longer any good outside of stafford and an aging and unmotivated calvin johnson.

the rest of the team was bad and they got really lucky.  this team is probably more talented than that one overall, but has been really unlucky.

but after 4 years in charge and with some very high draft choices, we should expect better results.

you could see the team grow with that core.  they went from 0 to 2 to 6 wins and by the end of that 6 win season you could see them getting better and being actually good.  then they went 10-6 and got the playoffs and what should have been a nice 4 or 5 year run with that core.

but then jim schwartz led them to a 4 win season.  the fact he wasnt fired after that was malpractice.  they brought him back and all he could muster was 7-9 and that was with ansah to go with suh.

the 11-5 season was the last gasp.  its too bad the refs screwed them against dallas because that team was pretty decent.

its been a steady decline since then.

Had they beaten Dallas that year I really believed that team was good enough to get by the Packers and land in the NFC championship game with Seattle. So close

The Lions are still pretty good at fourth-quarter comebacks.  Sunday's Bears game was a perfect example.
