Don't care what happens as long as Skubal has a good outing.

Skooby-Doobie-Doo Day.

Reyes doubles.  Castro sac bunt, Reyes to third.  Need to get Reyes to third so that Cabrera can flail away and leave it up to Candelario?

Why Carrasco chose to throw offspeed up in the zone to Cabrera instead of just pounding FBs up there is beyond me.  Cabrera couldn't catch up to a Jordan Zimmermann fastball up in the zone at this point.

Ugh.... Skubal has him down 0-2 and surrenders a leadoff home run.

I gotta wonder if Skubal lost life on his FB this year with the velo gain.  Yes obviously there is a HUGE difference between AA and the big leagues but his FB last year at 93-94 was unhittable to minors.  Like they almost literally couldn't touch it.  It's why it was graded so highly.  But so far this year the velo is up but it doesn't seem to have the same life and guys just aren't swinging through it.

As I say that, he gets back to back whiffs on his FB.

I really think it is just the hitters are that much better.  These hitters are not going to help him on sliders out of the zone near as much.  As Morris said, he has to use that changeup to keep hitters guessing.

I’m not in a position to follow this game but according to the stats he’s struck out five in 2 innings so I feel like we’ve already won

Those cardboard cutouts I see at some stadiums are totally wrong. 70% of them should be people looking down at their phone.

It's taken him almost 50 pitches to get there.

So this is the 5th inning of his career.  Nothing has been efficient yet.  It seems like these hitters at the top of the lineups are either good enough to foul of his fastballs or smart enough to lay off his slider.  He's going to need to learn to spot that changeup quick to survive in the majors.

Agreed. He's still really green. And he has to build up his strength. But yeah, MLB SP need at least 3 pitches. MiLB strikeout stats can sometimes be misleading because most MiLB hitters aren't as disciplined and swing at many bad pitches.

He’s also faced almost exclusively RH hitters.  I’d bet he’d be lethal against lefties.   Wonder if it makes sense to keep him up in a middle relief role where he can come in to face 3 batters at a time with better matchups.
