so when they picked up C. Fulmer the conversation was around him scrapping the cutter and working on finding the 3-4 mph  on his fastball that he has lost since he was drafted. All I can say is apparently not so much.

I haven’t been able to watch games lately but is miggy hitting weakly in these 0-4 games or lining out?  All these 0-4 are worrisome

It looks like you can only use him in games that are already lost.

He's no LiMu Emu, but he is 7th in mlb in average exit velocity. He's hitting the ball hard.

Can someone give me one good reason why Casey Mize is not in the rotation?

I suppose the uncertainty generated by Fla and StL about whether the season will be able to continue is part. Alexander's 9 K appearance last week also, but after tonight that's probably a smaller part!

I didn't comment on yesterday's game - but I wanted to mention that play by Norris - you know, the same play that put Cron on the IL - that may have been the best, most athletic play I have ever seen a pitcher make. I know there have been many great plays by pitchers - Jim Kaat alone made several. But what Norris did was crazy athletic. He might have made a good safety in fb

Some chatter on Twitterverse suggesting that we pick up Greg Bird who was just dfa'd by the Rangers. After hearing the name I was down for it but after looking at his stats the past few years he hasn't been as good as I thought.

Still has some power potential though so could be worth a flyer to play 1st for a couple weeks until Cron gets back.  I'm sure we have a few guys on the 40 that we could afford to drop.

Is the service time ruling for this season etched in stone, or is it dependent upon how long the season goes?  I can't remember.

IMHO - It might be worth looking into. If we continue this course it seems closer to resembling the team that was on the field last year (we do not want that!). Maybe they need more time to evaluate Crohn. IMHO, putting Candy at 1B weakens two positions (1B & 3B). Yet, they feel have to find out more about DLugo. Getting Bird, if Crohn is out for a bit, would allow for him to get a chance and see where he is at as well... I also thought FSchwindel would deserve a look. He did well in the minors last year and decent at both camps earlier this tear - he is not that old. Either move allows Candy to stay mostly at 3B. Also WCastro has to be figured in, as they do not wish to see a year of development lost. Then again Niko is doing well so far at one position... we shall see.

the supple reed withstands the strongest winds.  You must grip the sword with enough strength to strike a mighty blow and lightly enough to parry the blows of your opponent.   The farmer who lets one field in seven lay fallow will have soil able to carry him into his sunset years.

The CBA has made it advantageous for the team to keep the player off the MLB roster for financial reasons centered on team control of this expensive asset.

I realize we are not expecting to go all the way this year.  But at least we are competing.

good question. I'm going guess the MLPA will demand a full year be granted for however many games each team ends up playing. Whether they get it?

I don't think Lugo gets much rope. His audition will be short if he doesn't hit.

2017: 7-3
2018: bad start
2019: 8-4
2020: 9-5

Not specifically directed at you, but we shouldn't get too excited.

Or they will get to the WS and Mize will have pitched too many innings and be out of gas. And Cisnero will fail to cover 1st quickly enough on the play that lets the other team escape in an elimination game.

That 2017 start included JV, JUp and JD on the roster. 2019 included a healthy Matt Moore who was showing early career stuff and he (and others) went down with injuries. Now that Cron is down let's see how they respond.

He ran and dove. That's something literally anyone can do if in the right place and right time, which he was. None of what he did resembles anything a safety in the NFL can do. Agree to disagree I guess but I think this is way blown out of proportion.

Agreed, just saying. Hopefully he's not out long.

I don’t really know how to define “too excited” but at 9-5, they would need to go 21-25 to finish the season (assuming all games are made up).

21-25 is the same rate as a 74 win team. The tigers are probably not a 74 win team, but maybe.

It’s not unreasonable to be a little optimistic.

That said, they are 9-6 now, so they need to go 21-24, which is a 75/76 win pace. That’s a bit tougher.

But if they win today? They only need to go 20-24. That’s a 73/74 win pace again.

None of this means the tigers are actually good or measurably better than last year’s team at the start of the year. But I think they are “good enough” to scrape together a 21-24 record going forward.

Yup. Tougher to keep that up over a long season but man, just about anything can happen this year. Especially if Miggy gets hot, which is still a big if. I think he will if he stays healthy. I just don't think their record is that indicative of talent level just yet. They had a bunch of guys start hot at the same time.

The W-L record is meaningless this year.  I really don't care.  It's nice they are winning some games, and staying in most of them.  Hopefully this continues.  The silver lining is the progress we're seeing from some players, including JaCoby Jones, Gregory Soto, Spencer Turnbull and Candy.  They have inched into the conversation as players who could play roles on the next good team.  Hopefully, a few more emerge (i.e., Funkhouser). I know he's a free agent, and 31, but I'd be fine having Romine in the catching mix for the next few seasons.  Great insurance in case Rogers doesn't pan out, and serves as a bridge to Diggler.

The negatives?  Boyd looks like the pre-first half of 2019 version.  That's a bummer.  Miggy doesn't look like he'll have a Big Papi-type renaissance, so riding out the rest of his contract will be a bit rocky and inconsistent.  And, somehow, Harold Castro and Victor Reyes still get AB's.
