2020 Hurricane thread

Recommended Posts

As of just yesterday, Isaias wasn't supposed to hit hurricane status until saturday as the Dominican mountains were expected to beat him up. But at the last minute yesterday, he formed a new center just to the north of land, and last night was upgraded to a hurricane with 80MPH winds. He is now heading towards the coast of FL, and then possibly NC.

The 11am update brought it even closer to FL. Should be getting pretty nasty there tomorrow evening.

Heading back to Virginia this weekend looks like we may get a bit of it Tuesday. We are far enough inland to avoid much damage. It’s been extremely hot and dry there, hoping for enough rain to revive the grass.

Survived the night with no major issues outside of the alert for tornadoes around 4:15 this morning. I couldn’t judge wind gusts but it felt like the inside of a car wash with the heavy rains and wind for about a half hour.

It looks like we’ve received about 2 inches or so of rain so far, maybe another inch or so expected this morning.

Power went out about a half hour ago.

I was in Myrtle Beach and the Outer Banks in mid-August last year and about three weeks later Dorian really hit the area. Wishing you all the best.

We rented a house on the bay in Norfolk end of July / beginning of August last year.  Kind of did a double take at the storm track.

Stay safe!

We are good, far enough from any big body of water just outside Williamsburg. Mostly a few down trees and power lines. It does look like the downtown area of Suffolk got hit pretty hard with tornados last night.

Things are about to get silly. I have doubts about Laura surviving the islands. But if she does, yikes. Also, the GFS now has Marco going straight into Louisiana with Laura right on his heels. We'll see.

Both tracks now updated and on track to hit the New Orleans area 48 hours apart, as hurricanes. Marco Monday afternoon, Laura Wednesday afternoon.

I wonder if president dickweed has enough paper towels to throw around at folks.

Marco is officially a hurricane with 75MPH winds, will make landfall in 24 hours just SW of New Orleans. That's a bad scenario, as usually most of the convection and storm surge occurs to the E/NE side of a hurricane and that is the case with Marcos.

Sheer is weakening today. The big question is where Marco stays around 75 or blows up? Anything can happen in the gulf.

Did Marco form after Laura but closer to America?  Or is Marco a quick moving storm while Laura is slower?  I’m confused how Marco will make landfall before Laura if these get named in alphabetical order.

Formed much closer.

Sounds like Marco has weakened to a tropical depression.

Laura, on the other hand....

Yeah, Marco bitched out. Laura is now forecast to make landfall as a major (cat 3+) hurricane! Luckily it looks like she'll land west of NO rather than head on, but again the east side is where most of the convection tends to be so how much she affects NO remains to be seen.

I watched the weather channel for an hour last night.... love hurricane coverage.

Laura gained 55MPH the last 24 hours. She nearly doubled in size overnight. Up to 115 and could make landfall overnight tonight as a cat 4. Right on the TX/LA border.

I don’t ever remember seeing the NWS use the word “unsurvivable” while describing a potential storm surge before

Taken from a FB post (wxsynopsis)

Quote

****ALERT: NOAA NHC RECON HUNTERS DETECT 145-150MPH WINDS AT THE SURFACE. 180MPH WINDS ALOFT****

Laura is on the cusp of Category 5. This is an extremely dangerous, catastrophic, life-threatening scenario unfolding for Port Arthur and Lskes Charles, Louisiana

Yikes, a cat 5 now?

Basically splitting hairs. Not quite but it's semantics at this point. Cat 5 = 157+. the 11pm CT update could show 160 but we'll see.

High tide is around 6am CT. ****'s getting wrecked.
