When are they going to move JaCoby up in the order? Or are they going to keep him ninth because superstition?

I am not especially optimistic.  I think the Tigers have a poor team, but it's a screwed up season and they have a relatively easy schedule.

have you seen their august/september?

nothing but white sox/twins/indians/cubs/brewers/cardinals.

they dont get the royals again until the end of the year.  after they get done with the royals and pirates in a week, theyre going to get murdered.

Half the players in those teams may be out of the lineup by then. I’m exaggerating because the same thing could happen to this team, but there’s a lot of things you can’t depend upon happening under these conditions so we might be surprised.

Sparky says this season you can't really get a sense of how the season is going to go until you reach the 15 game mark.

the idea is not that anyone wants Mercer so much as it doesn't require them wanting to bring anyone up from Toledo for Candelario to lose his gig. In fact I'd forgotten all about Lugo, but I suppose he is actually next man up at 3B.

35-5 would go a long way this season.

I can see Candelario getting some rope, maybe even shifting over to 1B next season if Paredes is ready for 3B.  Candelario is still inexpensive and next season probably wasn't the season to spend preCOVID.  They might just go with Lugo at 3B until Paredes is ready if they do in fact move Candelario over to 1B and Paredes needs more AAA time.

But Candelario definitely needs to show something this year.  If not, the Tigers are probably going for another inexpensive one year contract 1B option.

I'd leave him there.  No pressure.  Even though the 5 spot is a black hole.

That's an interesting call given the nature of this season.  Do you try to ride a hand hand a little more than in a normal season?

Oh I’m sure Lugo is next, because I could see the org delaying getting the clock ticking on Paredes (b. Feb 18, 1999) at least two years.

I also don’t see Tork starting at third if they plan on keeping Paredes, because then what? Do they see Paredes sliding back to short?

In this year 2020 .. I could see 20-20 as a fair opportunity toward a potential playoff spot.

Given how his performance changed after he changed his swing last year all the way until he got injured, and then how it started out this year, this might be more than a hot hand situation.

I don’t have MLB EI or TV this year so I’m not able to watch Tigers while they play. Just saw the Jones HR highlight on Quick Pitch and they used Matthew Shephard’s call as Jones rounded third base, which was, “He wears the crown again on a Wednesday night!”

That’s ... unique.

After his horrible first few weeks last year he was at like an .850 OPS the rest of the season.  Not  sure what the exact number was since I don't know how to filter out games but just going by his monthly splits .850 looks like a rough estimate.  Could actually be a little higher.

His lack of walks is a bit concerning but I don't expect him to be a high obp guy anyway.   If he can continue to hit for extra base power his slugging could outweigh any obp difficienties he may have.

I doubt they will make a long term commitment to Schoop, so 2b is also available to Paredes if he maintains his mobility.

Taking his last 250 PA, which is May11 to Aug 8, 69 K (still too high), 24 BB (not bad), 264/343/486 for a 829 OPS.  You can win with that production from a plus defensive CF.  Fly in the ointment is that his BaBIP over that span was 343, which is on the high side of what JaCoby will likely sustain.

This is an organization that has long punted on defense, so I guess this wouldn't surprise me. Heck, it wouldn't surprise me if they tried to shoehorn him in at short.

I observe that some of our substandard guys seem to have improved to solidly mediocre (or better in the case of Farmer and Jones).  I suspect age has something to do with it.  28 or 29 seem to be peak ages for most players -- or at least part of their primes.

"long"? I don't see much philosophical continuity between the Tigers pre and post Avila. . Right now on the average night we are playing only a single sub par defender, which would be Stewart and he may not be long for it. That is a change from the 3 to 5 we often took the field with in years past.

Tigers' team DRS and league ranks during the 2010s (Fangraphs):

Season            DRS AL Rank
2019 -85 14
2018 11 8
2017 -58 14
2016 -47 13
2015 0 9
2014 -56 14
2013 -62 13
2012 -29 13
2011 12 6
2010 -5 10

Better than 0 just twice in ten seasons. Ranked tenth or worse seven of ten seasons. Second worst in the league four of those seasons. Best rank in the past decade: sixth.

This is not the track record of an organization that puts emphasis into constructing a defensively-sound team. It is rather the track record of an organization that has long punted on defense.

Maybe 2020 will be different, but probably only in the way that 2018 and 2011 were different: by random variation. They're simply appear to be not trying to put a good defensive unit on the field, and I believe it would be consistent for the Tigers to shoehorn Parades into a middle infield spot irrespective of his defensive ability there.
