Yeah. Probably coincidence but it doesn't look good for them. Curious to see what happens next year.

not a good year to be a former Tiger.  Price opted out, Verlander only made one start, Scherzer had a pretty pedestrian season, by his standards, and Sanchez and Porcello were awful.  Similarly, Upton and J.D. had awful seasons. I wouldn't call Nick's poor, but was below his standards.

Did I miss anyone?

JD has to be one of the most surprising.  Since his breakout in 2014 he's been one of the most consistent hitters in baseball, going from basically a mid 900+ OPS to .681 is a remarkable dropoff.   He only just turned 33 in August so it's not like he is that old.  Definitely at the age where you would expect some decline but nothing that drastic.

On the whole, guys who take a while to bloom tend to decline earlier and harder, if I'm remembering my Bill James correctly.

Jose Iglesias killed it this year, at least when he played.

All Star James McCann also excelled when he played.

I guess I was cherry-picking.

that has always been one of the unknowns with JD. Was he a guy that had to reach peak physical (27-31) to be a good hitter, or was he held back by by bad coaching and a couple of nagging injuries from reaching a higher peak 2-3 yrs earlier? If he is really toast at 32 that would argue that under that player career arc theory (which in general I think holds more than it doesn't), all the talk about JD remaking himself as a hitter may just been misdirection over the real story that he really was just a late bloomer.

But before we write him off, lots of guys have a down year here and there and bounce right back - we'll have to see if JD does or not.

We had some heated discussions about that here.
