2020 Tiger Non-Game Thread Thead

They aren't playing the games if it's for seeding. The games will only be played if St Louis is in or out:

Quote

But wait. The Cardinals aren't even scheduled to play 60 games. They're set to play only 58. How is that going to work?

Here's the situation, according to sources: At the beginning of the season, MLB told teams that in coronavirus-caused cases such as the Cardinals', teams would make up as many games as possible and that makeup games would be played only if they had a direct impact on which teams make the playoffs, not seeding.

Now, if the two games St. Louis could make up in Detroit on Monday could make the difference between them being the No. 4 seed and playing a game at home, that would be the exception. San Diego's magic number over the Cardinals for that spot is one, so the chances of that happening are infinitesimal.

Thus, if St. Louis needs to play those two games to move into the postseason (or potentially out of it), it will travel to Detroit and play one (or both) games Monday. If the playoff field is set and the games would simply be for seeding, the Cardinals will not play them and will be seeded based on their winning percentage.

It's entirely possible that no NL team will know until Monday night whom it's playing starting Wednesday. Which means four teams will travel Tuesday, shack up at a hotel and potentially play the early game the next day.

I'll be honest.  I am surprised at how little COVID has impacted MLB.  There were the big early blips with Miami and St. Louis.  And there were some random games here and there.  But I am surprised how well things have gone without a true bubble.

Same here, I was sure it would crash and burn within 4 weeks.

I just became aware that none of the radio or TV broadcasters have a bio in the Tigers 2020 Media Guide, something broadcasters traditionally receive, and furthermore, Matt Shepard's name doesn't show up within under any circumstance, not even once.

Shepard doesn't show up for broadcasts either.

From one of my newsletters, offered with a touch of salt.

Avoid the Boyd?
By Derrick Boyd

It took a relatively significant investment to roster Matt Boyd (LHP, DET) in 2020 drafts and auctions (151 ADP) and those who were so included are now licking their wounds on account of the 1 win, 7.63 ERA, and 1.70 WHIP he's posted in nine starts. Is Boyd's terrible performance a fact or a fluke?

There are both elements of extreme misfortune and skill regression here:

  • The two-run difference between ERA & xERA illustrates how unfortunate Boyd has been in each of hit, strand, and HR/F rates.

  • His fastball velocity is holding steady, but the pitch is not missing bats like it did in 2019 (SwK% from 13% to 9%). Though he's still getting tons of whiffs from his slider (19%) and change-up (27%), his SwK% and Dom are down from the previous year.

  • Boyd's xDom and xCtl are 10.5 and 3.1, respectively, which validates the 1.5 point drop in command ratio. Yet pitchers with a double-digit Dom and 3.0 command almost always provide better results than this.

  • Home runs have obviously been an issue for Boyd throughout his career, but there doesn't appear to be any correlation to launch angle. And the average exit velocity of balls put in play against him in 2020 (88.7 mph) is only slightly worse than league average (88.4 mph), and is actually better than it was in 2019 (89.3 mph).

Boyd's extremely poor performance in 2020 is a fluke, and his skills are much better than the surface stats would indicate. With a little bit of hit, strand, and HR/F rate help he is skilled enough to post a sub-4.00 ERA, a palatable WHIP, and well above 200 strikeouts over a full season.

Which young position players are you rolling with to start next season in Detroit?

Candelario -obv

Castro possibly

Paredes - needs more time in the minors

Daz - defeinse plays...overripe. What does more time at Toledo do for him. He will always have lesser contact rates and high Ks

JaCoby - yes but he has been hurt

Stewart  - #done with him

Rogers- should have come up instead of Haase

I don't have enough info on any guys who are in the alternative site.

Candelario

Willi

Reyes

Daz

Jacoby

Niko

Miguel (he’s young at heart and you included jaCoby in your list so I don’t know where we draw the line anyway).

I would consider the above players to be opening day locks.

Paredes and Hill and Alcantara - start at AAA

Stew - nontender

I think the following players/positions should be counted on for next season:

2B: Paredes (bat is ready, will need offseason to see if he can play at 2B).  Otherwise, he might need to learn the position at Toledo.

SS: W. Castro (bat is ready, defense is suspect, but should get reps here to see if he is the guy on our next good team)

3B: Candelario--needs to play here.  He's the best defensive infielder we have.

CF: Jacoby Jones--deserves the benefit of the doubt.

that's it.  I'd consider putting Cameron is RF for the entire season--after the rough start, he's looked better recently.  He already has a full season of AAA under his belt, so I'd be inclined to let him start.  We always have guys like Reyes and Demeritte that can plug in, if he's completely overmatched.  I would have also added Rogers, but I suspect they want him to get more playing time at Toledo before they bring him up.

C. Rogers.  Is there a problem we don't know about?  Or maybe he's just not good.

1B. ?

2B Goodrum (probably a multi-position player)

SS Castro (or do they move him to a different position?)

3B Candelario

LF Reyes

CF Jones (not really young, needs to stay healthy)

RF Cameron

DH Cabrera

Paredes starts season in Toledo

Stewart sucks

2022 will be the interesting season--I suspect that the Tigers will count on contributions from Tork, Greene and Diggler, at some point that season.
