Iglesias isn't going to hit .400.  Charlie Blackmon is though, I remember reading that a month or so ago.

Jose seemed to be a fish out of water here, both with his teammates and with Gardenhire. And who knows, Jose may have had lingering issues with the org over going back to the year he was shut down. I'm glad to see him do well. To me he always seemed like a nicer guy than the people who he had trouble with here. Probably a parting best for all parties.

Among players with 100PAs or more only 14 have a worse average exit velocity than Jose, he also only has 1 "barrel" for the whole season.  He is 4th in baseball in "flare/burner" rate which explains the high average.  Those balls are classified as having high launch angles but low exit velocities, basically your traditional bloop single.

Speaking of former Tigers I see that Nick is down to a .303 OBP and .800 ops on the season.

That is surprising.  Based on what he did against and playing half of his games in that park, I thought he was heading for a great season.  The last I looked, most of the guys in the Reds lineup were underperforming.

Yeah I think many of us(myself included) jumped the gun about him becoming a great hitter based off how he finished with the Cubs last year and the hot start to the year this year.

Also has anybody seen JD Martinez's line this year? Brutal!  Batting .205 with a .638 OPS.

Hold on a second. I thought Castellanos was playing out of his mind this season. Are you telling me that he is putting up a low 800 OPS and playing bad defense at corner OF or being relegated to DH? That doesn’t add up.

is Nick dumb enough to opt out this winter, passing on 3/48M guarantee?

Yes, this.

Bad time to be a free agent of non superstar ilk.

I'm confused about this too, he is the second coming of JD Martinez and the Tigers didn't know how to use him.

I was never Nick's biggest fan, but even I didn't think he was likely to have a 185 BA  slump over a 150 PA stretch.

Article today in the Athletic about the goings on with all of the Tigers employees and as of now there hasn't been any paycuts, furloughs or layoffs unlike some other teams.  Avila also said that coaches and scouts have been spending time taking classes on analytics and technology.

You mean that something like four years after announcing the analytics awesomeness that is Caesar, they’re finally starting to learn what goes into it?

Better late than never?

This is the evolution of the tired "scouts vs. stats" argument. No club is 100 percent on one extreme and no club thinks the side it leans away from is useless, so that isn't a debate anymore. Classifying teams can be tricky since it's somewhat common for departments within clubs to be on different parts of the spectrum -- a progressive club can lean hard on analytics in the big leagues and lean to traditional methods when scouting 15-year-olds in Latin America, as the depth and quality of the analytics differ wildly in each context -- but in this era, GMs have more control and influence across departments than ever before, so the tendencies don't vary much within individual organizations. More than a few GMs made every pick for their clubs in this year's draft, and that was unheard of a decade ago.

Eric Longenhagen and I created a grid with this traditional/progressive spectrum on the X axis in our book "Future Value" and, at first, we thought it would be hard to pin down. After consulting with people in the game, nobody quibbled more than a notch or two (on a eight-point scale) despite the subjective nature of the grades. The people who work in front offices know what information is driving decisions and what staffer has the most pull with management, so it's not hard to then figure out which clubs are using what sort of information in making those decisions, while it's almost impossible to prove it objectively by just looking at the transactions log.

I use that on the X axis for this exercise as well, while the Y axis represents risk tolerance. The risk tolerance values also are subjective and apply across a number of departments. This becomes useful when a club is rebuilding, doesn't have veterans to trade and isn't active in free agency. In that case, the types of players a club targets in its small amount of trades or free-agent signings can inform a risk-tolerance grade, while the way it uses its capital in the draft and international markets largely defines its risk tolerance.

Wow that sucks. Has anyone come back from TJ so late? If anyone can, it's JV. I wish him all the best

ain't gonna lie...will be sad when this season is over.  it's been a nice respite for me from the COVID and political nuttiness (which seem to have merged).  I've been encouraged by some of the individual performances, and hopeful that the time that Mize, Skubal, Paredes, Cameron and W. Castro have put in will benefit their development.  Candelario and Turnbull established themselves as legit major leagues and a few guys in the pen (Norris, Cisnero and B. Garcia) have looked good at times.  I suspect some combination of Tork, Greene, Rogers, Manning and Faedo will make their debuts next season.

Anyways, wish there was more baseball--I was getting excited for awhile that we could potentially make the postseason.

Damn you, Sheldon!

Well said, I concur. Even with the covid/political weirdness.

given the current NL postseason landscape, it seems that we will need to play those extra two games against the Cardinals--seems like it could have bearing on how they are seeded.  I'd like to see it--two more games of baseball, but could also help our draft position.
