Detroit Tigers Hall of Fame - 1930 Elections
The names below represent pitchers and hitters who hung up their Tigers uniforms for the final time by the end of the 1930 season, logging at least 300 innings or 1,000 at-bats during their time with Detroit. It also includes non-players who were significant to the organization.
Between these names and the position players below, we will agree upon a list of up to 12 players which will make up the pool of 1930 nominees.
We will be voting on the 1930 nominees as well as the nominees from previous classes who were not elected but who met the minimum vote percentage to remain on the ballot.

Looks like 3 automatics and a lot of homework for my other two votes.

12 nominees Easy
Pitchers: Dauss, Stone, Holloway (and the final two are because of service here)
Batters: Cobb, Heilmann, Blue, Fothergill, Bassler, Manush,Woodall, Wingo, Rice.
Our offense was simply awesome during this era for the most part while our pitching was terrible. People gripe about Cobb as a manager. Look at some of those years we had with him as manager despite some really lousy staff - staffs that Lil' Stoner and Holloway played key roles on by the way. Hooks Dauss was our only consistent saving grace at any level.

My printer at home sucks and it's way cheaper to use company paper to print all the stats from baseball-reference. Hope it's a slow day at work so I can get started.

Hooks gets big points in my book for longevity. Pitchers in that era just didn't last. The fact that he was able to throw 3300+ inning is very impressive.
I will go with Troppens ballot ideas. I think there are 12 nominees as well.
Greatest hitter in Tigers history up on the ballot this time.

I would favor Gibson and Carroll over a backup catcher (Woodall). Not that any of those 3 likely will get a single vote.

A quick tidbit
Lu Blue
He was considered a very fine first baseman. And even as late as the 20s that was looked for more than you'd think for a first baseman.

I agree with the nominees, and I agree that this will be our toughest vote yet. At first glance 3 stand out. I'm excited to compare the stats and intangibles that will compete for my 2 other votes.

The depth of talent in the '30 class is astonishing. And yet I still may very well use two votes on carryover nominees.
Agreed on Dauss. The sheer magnitude of his career makes him a shoe-in in my book. Save Mullin, no one ever pitched more innings in a Tigers uniform. That is an incredible feat.

The 4 that jump out at me are Cobb, Heilman, Blue, and Dauss. Most of the others were not in Detroit long enough, or don't appear to meet my cutters.
Fothergill - I may give some thought to Rotund Robert, but his being a part-time player is a strike against him.

Woodall makes it because of time served. However, I'm not going to fight it too hard. The bottom of this list will be gone by this time next week.

Blue is the one I will be doing most of my research on. At first glance, and that's all it is, gonna have to research and compare #'s.

Fothergill will definitely get a look from me.
Throw Bassler in there though too. He had some strong seasons for us and did it as a catcher. Like any catcher he was considered slow but was considered very strong defensively.
He will get consideration. But that's what is going to make this tough. We have some locks that I have to vote for leaving very little room for error with the other selections.

I had been looking at some of these a couple weeks ago, and Cobb, Heilman, and Blue stood out immediately to me as well. I need to look carefully at the others.

Blue is borderline for me I haven't made up my mind with him.

Next election (I like to do this to keep people looking ahead a bit)
George Uhle: One of the best hitting pitchers of all time. He was used as a pinch hitter a ton.
Earl Whitehill: His wife was the model on Sun Maid Raisins. Apparently a hottie.

After a quick visit to baseball-reference and wikipedia, I still think Donie Bush is a better candidate than Lu Blue, I'll gather info and post why by Tuesday night. Who knows, I may change my mind and go with Blue.

This is going to be a tough class. There are too many holdovers that I would like to see make it. Most will more than likely carry over, but Summers is going to be gone (I really wanted him to make it, but there are too many others that merited my vote over him the last couple classes. Any chance he can come up again when we get to the annual elections?

Yeah,
I have promoted Blue a bit even since a few weeks ago but I'm shocked how much immediate love he's getting. He'll definitely be under consideration but I can't say he's going to be on my ballot.
I think that Cobb guy may make it but I won't say more than that for sure right now - although one is definitely on and another is about 75% on it already. I won't say if those people are newbies or vets on the ballot although I think people can guess who the lock is.

DTroppens don't forget Frank Navin and Ty Tyson will be on the next ballot as well I believe...

Squid,
I am actually leaning your way as well. There's a very good chance those two will be battling for a fifth spot on my ballot. In many ways they are very comparable.

Sorry, I am not going to vote for a baseball player because his wife was a hottie (good thing there is one woman on this team to keep you guys in check ) I will, however, check his stats like everyone else

Navin's up in 1935. Ty Tyson's career carried on until the '50s.

Tyson wouldn't be the next one for sure. He went well past 1935 and into the 1950s

I have 3 locks right now and about 4 players that could end up with the last 2 spots on my ballot.

I am not necessarily giving Blue "love." He is just one that caught my eye as being impressive while looking up names a couple weeks ago. I have a lot of research to do. Many of the others are unknown to me.

Whitehill probably ranks as one of the best "average" pitchers we've ever had or the worst "solid" pitcher we ever had or however you want to say it. His longevity and occasional strong years will merit him consideration.

I am the same way. There are two there I hope would be locks for anyone. My third lock could be more debatable.

A month ago, this era of names was exactly that--names. The only one that I had even heard of was Cobb. I tell you, I am very new at this. Well, time for me to head to bed. Saturday is my research day. Good night all.

I do this.
1. Initial impression (I have a strong basis initially because this is one of my favorite subjects in the entire world. Plus I've actually rated players throughout Tiger history for a game I play).
2. Glance through a book like Neft and Cohen's Baseball Encyclopedia to solidify my feeling about that player. It's a great book because it has the starters listed year-by-year and the pitchers rated straight down from wins. And on the same pages you can compare the other players at those positions with the rest of the AL teams. If people don't have this book, GET IT! It's paperback and I think costs $23.95. I usually get it every other year but since the Tigers went to the World Series this year I got it back-to-back years. It's great to pick the book up, flip to a page and look at the Tigers about five years before that year and five years into the future. To see how the team progressed or regressed with its moves is very easy with this book in a simplistic form. For some years it may tell you why a guy suddenly had 95 games played when he usually played 133 games with an injury code. You do this for a year and you'll start memorizing seasons to a decent amount. At least be able to say 1) penant contender, 2) solid team, 3) average team, 4) slightly below average or 5) yuck. Until the 1990s we have very few yuck teams (check 1952).
3. Look at other data and books I have and look for my favorite stories. For about a three year period I kept a notebook next to me and wrote anything I saw about a player in that book. It was painstakingly slow so I kind of stopped doing it. I wish I didn't but I did. But every player we've posted here I have at least a limited amount of data in my notebook here. As little as I posted, it's amazing how much I have. Also look at theballplayers.com (that's it or very close), and any of the books out there that detail player careers.
4. Starting to look at the Sporting News collecting at paper of record or for the years I printed Detroit articles in the paper, use those. Go to retrosheet.com and look at some boxes for the years boxes are there. You can get a sense where a guy batted in the lineup and all sorts of things.
5. A grilling statistical look with traditional tools, tools used at that time and today's tools.
6. My game play with players. If a guy was lucky and batted .350 I don't use that, but by looking at game cards you learn what guys were good at or weak at. Nothing has taught me more about Tiger history than doing this with my encyclopedia sitting next to me. Right now I'm doing this with a 1923 Negro National League replay with a Negro League book next to me and soon I hope to do the same for a 1940s or 1950s PCL season.
7. Other crap that I won't go into.

I look at longevity and excellence. I have standards that I have set for both and I am sticking to them.
If someone is borderline I read up on them a bit. However if their stats are there they should be too.

Free baseball computer game
It's very basic and not the greatest but it's pretty darn good for being free. Do a search for SBS baseball. Download the game. There is a new library and an old library where you can download many seasons. Not just AL and NL but the Federal League, Japanesse baseball, the 1923 Negro National League, Cuban seasons, Mexican seasons, Texas League and many minor league seasons. It's one of those things you may get addicted to for a night or a weekend and then never play again, but it'll be fun for those few days. You can make lineups and play actual season schedules. You will get a feel of these seasons. If you put yourself in that era and play the game like it was played then you'll learn even more.

On a list I was compiling as I was skimming over names and numbers a couple weeks ago, I wrote 6 names down for this class Cobb, Heilman, Bassler, Blue, Daus and Fothergill. Cobb I know enough about to know that he is a lock. All the others are still names to me. Now I need to go back and find out why these names caught my eye, and compare them to the others that are on the list. Once I have had a chance to look at everyone, I am sure that I will have definite choices. I will also need to compare these with guys on the carry over list. I have not yet looked at the stats of all of those on the list--I want to do that when I am more awake and ready to concentrate.
