Jays are reeling. Time for good Max to show up. Romero is a lefty so I guess that means that Elmon is the DH. but the other 8 guys might do some damage.

Remember early in the season Jim kept playing Delmon in LF every day because he didn't want to hurt his feelings by making him DH? Yeah, that was dumb.

4 off days in one month. Seems weird.

Can't say it isn't good timing though. Perhaps a day off to think about how much their last series sucked will help them come out with a fire under them for the rest of the month.

The Jays lineup is a joke right now, Scherzer should rack up the Ks as usual....hopefully that leads to a win

Thank goodness that our competition is relatively weak (esp. with the Sox facing the Yankees and the Blue Jays playing poorly).

Maybe we can win the division just by playing "good enough", but good enough seems like a definite step up from where we've been lately, so let's start with just winning this series.

On the bright side, Young's tenure with the Tigers is growing shorter day by day.

The BJ’s are probably thinking to themselves, just what we need the Tigers to get back on track.

Can we say that with any confidence? I mean, the Tigers were stupid enough to tender him $6 million at the beginning of 2012, and frankly he hasn't underperformed at all, at least not relative to any realistic expectations.

Either (a) the Tigers realized that they would get something similar to what he's done in 2012 and felt that was adequate, in which case we're just as likely as not to see him come back or (b) the Tigers thought he would do a lot better, in which case they were fooled (either because of 2010 or the playoffs or something else) into thinking he was better than he actually was.

I happen to think that they knew that he was likely a low-700 OPS DH, hoped that maybe he'd play great "for groceries", and thought that a low-700 OPS DH would do in a pinch given the other hitting they thought they had but didn't materialize (Raburn, Boesch, Peralta, Avila).

I guess since they're likely to be sober about the rest of the lineup, they're likely to realize that they need more than a low-700 OPS DH for 2013.

But still, they keep playing the bastard day-in/day-out, regardless of the futility of it all....so I have a hard time having confidence in their decision-making when it comes to DY...they seem to have a major blind spot with this guy.

I doubt they paid $6 million expecting a .700 OPS DH/LF. I think they saw that he hit for some power at the end of last year and in the playoffs and were hoping he could repeat his 2010 season.

I think there is very limited chance Young comes back next year. I doubt he would even want too. Some other team will give him a better shot of playing time. Martinez is the DH next year. Valverde is probably gone too.

We fear that the Tigers might bring back Young because they are old school and they like what he did in the playoffs last year, but I really can't see him coming back next year. Martinez will be the DH and they seem to have conceded that Young can not play the outfield full time.

It's funny to me that a player can obviously be so bad that a team would not consider bringing him back the next season, but they'll continue to play him regularly in the current contending season. Sunk costs Dave, sunk costs.

Yes, I don't see him coming back either. But the Tigers do need a RH bat in the OF. I just hope they don't give Rugburn (Raburn) another chance.
Dirks may be able to hit LH pitching. And his defense look above average. Get a RH bat to play RF and this line-up would look much better.
Just a high OBP guy with good defense for the 2 hole.

Yeah - I'll echo the sentiment that the Tigers likely signed Delmon with the thought that he was going to be 27 and that nagging injuries had prevented him from building off of his 2010 numbers.

I do not think they signed him expecting the performance he actually provided.

Well, do they really have a clearly better option at this point?

I think if Boesch or Berry or Raburn or Baker or Santiago were clearly better, they would be getting Delmon's AB.

Agreed. The big difference between this year and next is Victor Martinez.

A huge question for me, though: is Martinez still going to be able to hit? He had settled in as a nice .850ish OPS kind of guy for a few years. But he'll be 34, hasn't played for a year, etc. What should we expect from him? .300/.370/.470? .280/.350/.450?

What this team really needs is to sign Clemens after he is done with his stint in Indy ball. You really can't get that kind of attitude without going external. And Clemens isn't pitching in the Indy leagues for giggles.

Even though he'll be an overpaid DH to be sure, a good hitter in that 5 spot really, really stretches the lineup. If they got a good hitter to play a corner OF spot, their lineup next year would be deadly.

You know, people will spin this like it's something desperate from Roger, but to me it just speaks of how much he must love throwing a baseball. What an incredible athlete and competitor.

I will be thrilled if VMart jumps back in there with a mid800's season in 2013...he has age and a season off working against him....I expect at least Johnny Damon level hitting, anything better would be nice....guess I'm Mr Sunshine today, huh?

So does the number 13 in 2013 mean anything, or have they exhausted all of their freaky bad luck in 2012?

I believe that at least Pierzynski and Rios are on PEDs. They are having such adorable bounce back stories and they are in the most corrupt clubhouse in the AL.
