Remember Dick McAuliffe's funky batting stance? We used to copy that playing neighborhood baseball or wiffle ball. No batting coach today would allow a batter to continue using that stance.

Thanks. Can't go wrong with Norm Cash and Dick McAuliffe. I enjoy your authentic collection with signatures very much.

Those were the days. We all used to do McAuliffe too. There were other unique approaches back then - playing as a teenager in the late 60's, if there were 18 guys on our team warming up before a game, 12 would be throwing like Tiant. The other 6 would be doing Dick Hall or, as we of course referred to him, Dick All. It's easy to do Dick All, you can practice it in front of a mirror. The key is, you always keep your shoulders square to home plate throughout your windup and delivery. You're a righthander; hold your hands together just above the waist while you're taking the sign, both feet on the rubber. When you're ready, take a step straight back with your left foot, and then step straight forward with it. Bring the ball and glove up to touch your right shoulder while you are stepping back, and then release the ball on the step forward, pushing your right arm toward the plate like a particularly violent throw at the dart board.

Wiilie McCovey was a good one too. His stance and swing were pretty orthodox but his practice swing in the batter's box didn't even touch the plane above home plate, it just lazily dusted his shoetops. Thousands of kids were emulating that, for no particular reason.

I used to throw like Tiant in backyard games just for fun. I got so used to it that it carried over into Little League games without me even realizing it.

They called that stance "Foot in the Bucket", and it was similar to what Mel Ott used to do.

Get this W and get back to .500 and then lets start moving forward. This is tough 10 game stretch coming up. A 6-4 record would put us at 40-39 going into the final two series at home before the all-star break.

I hate how Leyland continues to put Delmon in the #5 spot literally every time he plays him despite the fact that he has done nothing all year. I mean what will it take for him to move him down in the order? Every other player Leyland has no problem shuffling around but when it comes to Delmon he automatically pencils him into the 5th slot every time. I'd much prefer he give either Avila or even Peralta a shot at batting behind Prince instead of constantly seeing Delmon let the opposing pitcher off the hook by 1st pitch swinging after they labored through the previous 2 or 3 batters.

I'm a pretty pessimistic person, but I feel like this is a sweep. And I'm predicting that JV has more hits than the entire Pirates team does on Sunday.

That would be awesome, especially if Verlander only gets 1 hit on Sunday.

    Got a question:
I live in Australia but I visited family in Michigan in 1979 when the Pirates were playing the Orioles in the world series. I loved the 'pill box' caps that the Pirates wore. Does anyone have the same opinion about them?

    Got another question:
What determines when Miguel Cabrera wears stockings or long strides? Does he just decide on the day?

I hated those caps. I thought it made it look like that was the shape of the head underneath it. And I imagine Cabrera probably decides on whatever feels "hot" that day as to what style of sock he wears. Which socks has the most hits in them.
