This is not like the NFL. League means American League or National League. It's not the Major League. If someone wants to say say best in both leagues, they can say best in the majors or best in Major League Baseball (which is comprised of two separate leagues).

Yep, spot on. One could refer to both leagues as "the major leagues" but not as "the major league" since the "major leagues" consists of 2 leagues, the American and the National. OTH, each league AL or NL would be referred to in the singular.
