This team went into the season thinking it needed a fifth starter. Reality is, it needs a 3rd, 4th AND 5th starter. And the jury is kind of out on #2 until he gets off the DL.

Yes, I've been paying attention, and the kid could be the fifth starter. But I kind of want him to get to mid may before I make that determination. I am pretty sure porcello and Max already suck.

Like I said, you obviously haven't been paying enough attention if you have to wait until mid-May. I've watched each of Smyly's starts, and the kid looks like a veteran with great stuff. My only worry with him is an innings limit.

And as much as people are ready to throw away Porcello, he's had two good starts and two bad starts. That's pretty much par for the course for a fifth starter. Scherzer is the only concern, and it's obvious that his problem is mechanical and could be fixed with a good pitching coach.

It's not like they hit the ball hard against Max. Blue screwed him big time. If CC had thrown the same exact pitches, The Yankess would have only gotten three walks and one run. Bad bad umpiring. That being said, Max is frustrating to watch as his command just sucks.

Agreed. Max didn't have good control, but the Yankees didn't hit him hard at all. He should have allowed only the one run on the Granderson homer. The umpire screwed him today.

Max has had absolutely zero luck today.

I actually though this was a good outing by Max. The ump was squeezing him, his control was not good, and the Yankees were getting every kind of luck on rollers and squibs, and yet he still fought through it, refused to give up a big inning, and kept his team in easy reach of a W.

I didn't say Drew hadn't done great so far- He has. All I said was that I personally like to see someone actually do it for a good chunk of the year before I start counting on him. He's made all of 4 starts. That's like being sold on Chris Pittaro as your 3B after a couple of good games. Kind of silly if you ask me.

I do think that the tigers have a serious problem at 3 & 4. You never know what you will get from Porcello or Scherzer. They have been pretty bad so far this year. And with Verlander certain to come down to earth a bit, at least, that is where the rubber will meet the road for this team. The fact is, Scherzer is a 500 pitcher career and Rick is close to that. I don't see how you can get to the next level with a 1, a 2, a suspicious 3 and 4 and a rookie 5, plus have lightweights like Laird, Worth, Santiago and Rayburn playing consistently.

Poor comparison. Pittaro did not have the talent coming into the majors to be solid or above-average; Smyly has the stuff to be a number two or three starter.

There's a lot of guys who throw hard these days. But very few can locate consistently. I'm guessing you see a lot of 2-0 and 3-1 counts in AAA?
