You've got it backwards. Proletariat is the working class, bourgeois is the upper/upper middle class.

Think about how government has worked for the last two thousand years. First, there were kings and nobility. The power basis relied on divine right, which obviously doesn't exist.

Then the middle class rose up (see the late 18th century in America and France, for instance) and the power basis was shifted from heredity and godliness to words like freedom and liberty for all.

Marx hypothesized that the lower class would rise up and take over once they realized that the freedom and liberty promised them by the middle (ruling) class did not really apply, at least not in the same way. Laborers in the 1850s were not free. You had to be a white male to have any of the things that were supposed to be promised to all. But the end of slavery did not change this, Marx would say. The laborer is still controlled by the people controlling the means of production (bourgeois), so the sort of rhetoric of free and liberty doesn't mean anything to most people. Marx would say that nothing is that different today. A kid growing up in abject poverty does not have the same opportunities I've had.
