Who would have thunk it that on this day, we'd be routing for the TWINS to beat the INDIANS, in order to gain ground on 1st place?

Happy the Indians lost. It seems like we were just 8 games back or whatever our largest deficit was. Regardless of tonights outcome we will be 1.5 back at work with a 4 game series against Seattle, the Indians on the other hand, are headed to Yankee Stadium.

Lets just win tonight and be a half game back. We already won the series with Texas, tonights one of those nights where you fell like youre playing with house money.

Twins win it the 10th, on two hits and a throwing error (I think).

I'm not sure I want to see the Tigers in first, playing the role of front-runner. Come September, I'd rather see them playing catch-up. The pressure on the front-runner usually produces negative results.

This is a game we should, on paper, lose. They have a pitcher with a better and more consistant record; ours is just coming off the DL; they are at home; they are the defending AL champions; we have won two from them already and it seems that they just have to put an end to that.

But you have to play the game. A loss in this game would not kill the team or the fans--unless it's one of those "how did we ever figure out out to lose this game?" sort of things. But a win and a sweep would be amazing and take the guys back to Detroit in a very good mood. It would tickle the crap out of us, too.

I agree: we are setup to lose tonight. And provided we play well (i.e., the Rangers just beat us), it won't matter a wit.

But our offense right now is so productive, it's hard to see any pitching effort keeping us down. Really, I'd hate to see the offense crash. And as long as Jackson, Raburn, and Boesch keep stroking it, it shouldn't. That's what I'll be watching for; fewer K's, good contact from those guys. The end result doesn't really matter that much.

I love that the team is competitive. Anyone remember 2004? Yuck! SOOO hard to stay interested when you KNOW they are going to get smoked and there is NO chance of a division title or anything even close.

I remember being happy with 2004 after the way 2003 went... even with a losing season it looked like a team that was improving slowly but surely.

I'm already happy with this series, and a win tonight would be icing on the cake. :)

Since this is not such a critical game, and since the guys have been laboring in the Texas heat, I suspect we'll see many reserves in the lineup tonight (Leyland might even sit down Cabrera).

This will of course prompt a chorus of boos in the forum (Leyland sucks, fire the bum) which I will ignore. One thing I've learned about JL, he manages with the whole season in mind. Fresh legs, fresh arms in September, that's the objective.

You'll know they're going strong if they win tonight. Ogando is fantastic and he killed us earlier. But, I have a feeling Boesch is really enjoying making me look like an idiot and going to get some more XBHs.

It scares me a little bit having Martinez catch against a team that runs as much as Texas but I love seeing Avila get the days off from catching while still keeping his bat in the lineup. If we can give him one game a series as a DH, it has got to help sustain his legs over the course of his career.

It seems like over the last few weeks, Leyland has leaned heavily on LH/RH splits, overloading his line-up in both directions depending on the pitcher. Much more than he's done in the past. Although, without stalwart veterans like Maggs, Inge and Guillen, he can basically go to the bench often to play the splits. Unlikely he will sit a veteran to do it, so this is probably just a factor of the injuries I think.

It isn’t a health setback that pushed him back, he said.Rather, it was a timing issue. “To see more pitches, get more at-bats,” Ordonez said. “If you see, I don’t even have 100 at-bats in the big leagues. I need to get more at-bats.”

Technically, he’s right. He had 99 at-bats before right ankle weakness forced him to the disabled list.

“I need to play to get my body in baseball shape, play the outfield and run,” Ordonez said. The ankle, Ordonez said again, is fine.

I'm not sure Dirks will be sent down. Do we really need 13 pitchers? Send Gonzalez down. I know we sent Santos down for Coke, maybe Gonzalez or Wilk will be sent down instead of Dirks? Either way, I would hate to see Leyland stick Maggs out in RF and hitting 3rd. The team is going good right now and a disruption to the players could hurt us. Keep Maggs down there the full 30 days, until he PROVES he can drive the ball and play the OF every day. Maggs, Cabby and Victor sure would be a base clogging problem.
