I'd rather Max get lit up today than against the Yankees.

If something isn't working, I'd rather he know that today ... than against the Yankees.

Oh, and who is to say he wasn't just working on certain things in this game, or what exactly he was doing out there?

I doubt Max was thinking; I have to pitch well today .. so the fans will feel easy about my next start.

Sure, it's only spring and the games don't count, etc., but 11 ER is . . . not good. That goes beyond "oh he must just be working on something," imo, into "I wonder if he's out of whack again" territory.

    Maybe he's tipping pitches?

All good stuff, and stuff that happened in spring training.

I understand giving up 11 ERs is beyond bad, but I'm not going to freak out about spring training.

The Boston Red Sox are on a 10 game losing streak, should they be worried?

Another wacky inning for Mr Perry, but hey -- 0 runs and 2 Ks. That's something, right?

I doubt Scherzer is working on anything material, and I would find that odd in his last ST appearance if he was. Usually at this stage, it's about buildking up endurance and feeling good about the start of the season. Getting whacked for 11 ER's doesn't make a guy feel good going into the start of the season.

But I'm not terribly concerned either way.

Bottom line is he can't be feeling too good about 11 ER. I'm not ready to scream the sky is falling but it does make you wonder about his headspace going into his next start.

I'd rather not see him heading to AAA to work things out again......

EDIT - "It's just spring." Well, kind of. It's awful close to real baseball, and he has pitched poorly all spring.
Some guy on an ESPN fantasy baseball show was saying people should pick up Max for their team. I had thought his spring wasn't going so good and looked up his numbers. He has been horrible and then today this? I'm pretty sure testing things out is over and this was his last spring start to show he is ready for the season.

It is just spring but really I would of hoped for a better outing from him today. I'm a bit concerned because we're really counting on him.

Already a good interview piece up on Beck's blog talking to Scherzer about today and the road to wellville from here.

It's a fair question, since they said last year .. when he was pitching poorly at the beginning, it was way down.

Anyone else think that Scherzer was throwing mostly fastballs today? Tigers play the Orioles the second series of the season, and I wouldn't be surprised if either team wanted the other to see how they were going to pitch to batters. Hence the high scoring game.

Your last start in spring isnt about "working on certain things", its about putting the package together. This start is worrisome and Im sure has raised some red flags with Leyland and staff. You dont over-react but concern is justified.

Yeah, alarm bells should be going off ... hopin' DD and Leyland are hearing them as no one beyond Verlander has shown anything to suggest depth in the rotation.

Does anyone think that they (DD & JL) have an early back up plan if things go bad quickly?

Not sure what it could even be. If something happens to Verlander or Scherzer you might as well just pack the season up entirely, see if anyone wants to trade for Maggs or Valverde, and circle the wagons for next season.

I mean, I think the team has pretty good flexibility and depth and could absorb some key injuries without being sunk, but there's three guys who are just so irreplaceable that if they aren't there, it's over (Cabrera obviously being the 3rd).

I mean, if Scherzer is not performing, do you think DD would swiftly send him to Toledo and bring up someone quickly until he sorts himself out?

Also, would the change in temperature by going north help or hinder certain pitchers? Which ones thrive on the colder weather?

No, not quite time to panic yet ~ just be ready with contingency plans if the 2 - 5 starters are not looking like they have anything in the tank.
