I'll be blasted on this board, no doubt, but I think the true benefit of steroids is what Eric says. In fact, how much they actually help a ballplayer hit a baseball is highly disputable. If you read the science literature about steroids and baseball performance you'll discover that correlations between steriods and performance enchancement are pretty cloudy. As for the increase in offense and home runs since the early 1990s, there are myraid baseball reasons for that (see
Asterisk, an interesting book that explores the issue, as it relates to Barry Bonds).
But there is some evidence that steriods can help athletes heal more quickly--which has no doubt played a role extending guys careers.
