6/26/09 -- Detroit Tigers (Verlander) vs. Houston Astros (Rodriguez) -- 8:05 PM
Coming to you LIVE from Minute Maid Park, in Hot 'n Humid Houston, Texas...

It’s Your FIRST PLACE
DETROIT TIGERS
versus the
Houston Astros
PITCHING MATCHUP:
Detroit – RHP Justin Verlander (8-3, 3.31 ERA)
The Tigers broke up the back-to-back tandem of Verlander and Jackson to help out a rotation that has two rookie starters, but the break means little for teams that have to face Verlander these days. His eighth win in his last 11 outings, 10 of them quality starts, saw him overcome a first-inning home run to hold down the Brewers for 7 2/3 innings and outpitch budding star Yovani Gallardo on Sunday at Comerica Park. He continues to build on his Major League strikeout lead, but his pitch counts are allowing him to work deeper into games. His one career matchup with the Astros saw him outpitch Andy Pettitte for eight scoreless innings and seven strikeouts on June 28, 2006, in Detroit.

Houston – LHP Wandy Rodriguez (6-6, 3.18 ERA)
Rodriguez is coming off perhaps his best start of the season, holding the Minnesota Twins to two hits and one run while striking out eight batters in seven innings Sunday. He snapped his four-game losing streak with his first win since May 20, allowing just one hit in the first 22 batters he faced. Rodriguez has faced the Tigers only once previously, and it wasn't pretty. He gave up 10 hits and seven earned runs in 6 2/3 innings in an 8-5 loss on June 26, 2006, in Detroit.
NOTES:
This will mark the Tigers' first regular-season series at Minute Maid Park. They played two exhibition games there at the end of Spring Training in 2008. ... The Tigers announced Thursday that they agreed to terms on contracts with Edwin Gomez, their fourth-round selection in the First-Year Player Draft, and 21st-round pick Giovanni Soto. The Tigers also reached a contract with undrafted free agent outfielder Jordan Cruz of Kansas State University ... The Tigers are one of three Major League teams to have three players with at least 15 home runs each this year. Curtis Granderson and Brandon Inge have 17 each, followed by Miguel Cabrera at 15. ... The Tigers own a 50-18 record in Interleague Play since the 2006 season.

Even if these guys were in a 3-team trade, it's pretty rough to ask them to start back-to-back games.

Lookin' forward to seeing Pudge again tonight. Pudge vs. Verlander.
I liked Leyland's quotes today:
Quote:
"He'd be working out at 9 o'clock in the morning after playing all night," Leyland said. "He was unbelievable. I've never seen anybody work harder than this guy."
"I like him," Leyland said. "He played hard, he played hurt and he came to beat the other team. Some people felt like he was selfish, and I can tell you right now I wouldn't give you a nickel for any player that wasn't a little bit selfish. I have the utmost respect for him."

Don't forget that he also likes swinging at pitches 3 feet outside the strike zone.

Thames, Inge and Raburn: tonight, these three will combine for at least two homers.
Tigers win 6-2.

Pitchers like Wandy Rodriguez scare the living bejeebus out of me. He could be the outhouse, or the penthouse.

Yeah buddy.
I know Shelton and I have already discussed this, but last season, in Verlander's worst start ever: he didn't make it out of the second against the Yankees. No command, no nothing. But he struck Pudge out on three fastballs, each one higher than the last.

Just a hunch with a tough LHP, a struggling Granderson against LHP, a couple of weeks since a day off, and a hot Raburn.

Wandy is actually a pretty good pitcher, so he's not the scrub nobody that usually shuts down the Tigers.
Berkman is hot but the Astros suck and Oswalt isn't pitching, so with Verlander on the hill, I feel pretty confident.

The Tigers haven't lost in a week, and the world sparkles. I have a great attitude when I watch them play, because, even if they lose, well, it's no big deal after 7 wins.

I've seen Wandy have some absolutely tremendous starts, but I thought he was still working on the consistency, ala Edwin Jackson in 2008. Is he finally putting it together?
EDIT: I see he did have a 1.83 ERA through his first nine starts, but has mostly struggled of late.

Make no M istake about it, unless Houston gets a few early fluky's off Justin's fastball, this will be a 10+ K 8 IP W. 2-1 pitchers duel. Wandy likewise K's 10.

If he benches Granderson for a game, I doubt it would happen with an extreme fly ball pitcher on the mound.

I looked it up. No. They're bottom 1/3rd but not at the bottom. They've got a few guys who can hit on that team.

Luckily, Thames only has about 100 square feet to cover.
