The Tigers will be in 4th place if they lose tonight.

This team has rolled over like a dog the last two games. How they respond here says something to me about whether the veterans want to play here anymore.

So is it that the bandwagoners are gone? Or is it that the knowledgable people are too pissed off to deal with this? I hope it's the latter. I'm about ready to bail on this one myself.

This team has lacked an urgency to win all year.
I believe it is an attitude that comes from the manager. Leyland has bent over backwards not to push an urgency to win on this team, choosing instead to remain increasingly patient in in the face of the facts, telling the team there is lots of time.

They opened flat, it's OK there is time to come around.
Sheff is playing hurt and slumping in the first half, it's OK he's a veteran he'll come around.
Renteria is terrible for the first 4 mos, it's Ok he's a veteran he'll come around.
Numerous shut outs, it's OK the offense will come around.
The team gets swept by the Twins, it's Ok, there's time.
The team faces a big series with Chicago, while they are only 4.5 back. Leyland says it's not a big series, the Media and the fans are making a big deal out of it, the team realizes there is lot's of ball left.
Bullpen stinks, it's OK, Zumaya and Rodney will be here at the All-Star break.

I could keep going.

No urgency and then it was too late.

I have made a pretty significant effort to stick with this team for the past couple of weeks, but I feel like the team has given up on us. Every time that it seems that we're about to emerge and play some good ball, we have a horrible series (Minnesota, Chicago, Baltimore, Toronto, now this).

As much as I try to avoid drawing conclusions about the team's state of mind, it's hard to avoid those conclusions when I see a talented lineup controlled over and over by mediocre pitching (at least tonight it's against a real Cy Young candidate).

Earlier in the season, I was fooled by Lopez's low walk rate and ERA.

Opposing batter stats demonstrate that Lopez is a below-average pitcher who is past his prime and has neither the track record, the stuff, nor the performance level to warrant bringing him back next year.

Another meek, worthless inning of at-bats. I feel truly sorry for the many, many fans who have spent big money and time to show up for what should have been competitive, interesting games in August, and instead they've been treated to this. Very embarrassing.

Sheffield had a July OPS of .703 and so far in August .771
Also 3 for his last 20.

It's time to bench him. DH Guillen, Inge to 3rd, Let Ryan catch
starting September 1st, and see what he offers.

Anything is worth a chance, but I can't see Leyland doing anything like that. He's becoming just as big of a road block to success as Sheffield is.

It is amazing how fast this team rose and now as fallen again. I guess I take a much deeper pessimistic view of the future. I don't like to be that way, but the only true building blocks I see for the future is Cabreara, Granderson and Verlander if Leyland hasn't ruined him already this season.

At least watching some of the youngsters might be fun, because I'm here to tell ya', this team has not been fun to watch all year.

I've been saying that it's just a bad year and they should just add some pitching and try again next year. Lately, though, I've been warming up to the idea of a major shake up this off-season.

This thread has a chance to stay under 100 posts. Maybe a lot of people are watching the DNC but it's pretty boring.

This lethargy on the field is certainly an enigma. I'm not one who generally believes that a manager has much of an effect on the success of a team, but I do think that a manager is at his most effective in his first year of a new assignment. After that he gradually gets tuned out. And as the old saying goes, it's easier to replace the manager than it is to replace all the players.

I'm in complete agreement. Until about 3 weeks ago I thought it was just an off year, but now I'm getting to the mindset that we need to retool with a couple of core players and make another run.

I agree. Two weeks ago I was very much against a shake-up. But these guys are not playing up to their ability right now.

Being out of the playoff chase shouldn't matter. They've had a winning record, 3rd place or even 2nd place to chase, and just the sense of giving a huge hoard of fans something worth cheering for.

The stinkers like last night are just beyond belief. A homecoming game against a crummy pitcher with a big crowd on a Monday night. What gives?

Relying on Casey Fossum and Lopez at this point also doesn't make much sense to me unless they're hot, and they're not. Shouldn't we be seeing what some youngsters can do?

Agree .

Seeing guys like Magglio, Polanco, and many others seem to have already hung up there Jersey is very discouraging. Leyland may be losing his team, I hate to see it too.

I don't think there can be any doubt that there will be some type of coaching change in the off-season.
