Maroth hopes for home hospitality
San Diego (36-28) at Detroit (29-32)
By Jason Beck / MLB.com
Jason Johnson's next start is set. Now it's Mike Maroth's turn. Maroth will try to end a streak of five losses in as many starts when he takes the mound against the Padres and red-hot starter Adam Eaton Wednesday night at Comerica Park.
Maroth has dropped all five of his starts since switching places in the rotation order with Jeremy Bonderman, his longest losing streak since his 21-loss season of 2003. He could end up moving again depending on what happens Wednesday. Johnson will pitch on short rest Saturday after his rain-shortened outing Tuesday night, but manager Alan Trammell hasn't decided yet whether to have Maroth pitch on three days' rest Sunday.
Either way, he's making two starts at Comerica Park, which has ceased being his friendly confines. Whereas he was stronger at home than on the road last year, he enters Wednesday's start with a 1-5 record and 6.20 ERA at Comerica Park compared to his 3-2 record and 2.79 ERA away from Detroit.
Eaton, by contrast, has been effective just about everywhere this year. His nine wins are tied for second-most in the National League, while his eight-game winning streak is tied with Texas' Kenny Rogers and Washington's Livan Hernandez for the longest in the Majors this season. Eaton held the Tigers to a run on four hits in seven innings two years ago at Qualcomm Stadium for the Padres' only win over the Tigers since the 1984 World Series.
Pitching matchup:
SD: RHP Adam Eaton
• 9-1, 3.18 ERA in 2005
• Has not faced DET in 2004 or 2005
DET: LHP Mike Maroth
• 4-7, 4.54 ERA in 2005
• Has not faced SD in 2004 or 2005
Player to watch
Placido Polanco is batting .490 (24-for-49) during his current 13-game hitting streak. He had three hits and three runs scored Tuesday night.

Quick hits
The Tigers have suffered rain delays in each of their last four games dating back to Friday's series opener at Colorado. Wednesday's forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of showers with a high of 72. ... The Tigers are 4-6 in Interleague Play so far this season. ... Kyle Farnsworth has pitched 13 scoreless innings, during which he's struck out 18 batters without a walk.

This song fits us tonight. As frusterating as this season has been, this game shows that we can contend and find our way back to .500. We just can't worry about the little things.
Three Little Birds Bob Marley
Don’t worry about a thing,
’cause every little thing gonna be all right.
Singin’: don’t worry about a thing,
’cause every little thing gonna be all right!
Rise up this mornin’,
Smiled with the risin’ sun,
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singin’ sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true,
Sayin’, (this is my message to you-ou-ou:)
Singin’: don’t worry ’bout a thing,
’cause every little thing gonna be all right.
Singin’: don’t worry (don’t worry) ’bout a thing,
’cause every little thing gonna be all right!
Rise up this mornin’,
Smiled with the risin’ sun,
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singin’ sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true,
Sayin’, this is my message to you-ou-ou:
Singin’: don’t worry about a thing, worry about a thing, oh!
Every little thing gonna be all right. don’t worry!
Singin’: don’t worry about a thing - I won’t worry!
’cause every little thing gonna be all right.
Singin’: don’t worry about a thing,
’cause every little thing gonna be all right - I won’t worry!
Singin’: don’t worry about a thing,
’cause every little thing gonna be all right.
Singin’: don’t worry about a thing, oh no!
’cause every little thing gonna be all right!

From Tom Gage's blog:
Johnson, because of only two innings Tues night, will pitch Saturday night against SF. That means no callup of Sean Douglass (until the following week) if Maroth can go on three days rest on Sunday. That will be determined by how he pitches against SD in Wednesday night's game."If you want a guarantee, buy a toaster."--Clint Eastwood

Ah, we're facing Adam Eaton?
I got a personal problem against him. Back in 2003, I went to a Marlins game against the Padres. I was sitting near the left field foul pole, where the Padres pitchers were warming up and such. The pitcher warming up near us was Adam Eaton. But I had no idea who he was. In fact, no one did. Everyone was calling out to him so he can throw us up a few warm up balls. We pleaded "Mr. Eaton" and such, since no one knew who he was. He kept ignoring us until I yelled out "Hey, Mark Eaton, mind throwing us a few balls?" He turned around and yelled to me in a very "duh doofy"-ish voice "Mark Eaton was the basketball player". Now that we had his attention, we kept heckling him. "C'mon, Mark, throw us up a few!". He grabbed a few balls and threw them up to where a bunch of Padres fans were sitting. What got him really pissed was when I yelled. "Throw me up a ball and I'll teach you how to throw a slider. Maybe that'll help you get out in Double-A ball". That really pissed him off and now he went back to ignoring us.
Adam Eaton = *******.
I called out to Jake Peavy and complimented his glove. He threw us up a few balls. I got respect for Peavy since, but I had to root against him so our faithful Tigers can shell him.
C'mon Tigers, win this one for me.

There was also a GREAT "The Prisoner" episode titled after that quote: "Hammer into Anvil". Patrick McGoohan is just about the coolest guy ever. :) For non-Prisoner fans, McGoohan played Longshanks in "Braveheart". You know, Longshanks, the guy that threw his son's lover out a window, and sent the son's wife (Sophie Marceau) to bargain in bad faith when she didn't know it. :) She got him back in the end though.Originally posted by IdahoBert

He doesn't need to talk to fans when he is warming up either. You should bother players for balls and autographs before and after the game or when they aren't doing anything, not when they are warming up.Originally posted by Yoda

I think I kinda have to agree. Might have been nice for him to throw you a few, but he certainly wasn't required. Then you call him by the wrong name, when he corrects you, you continue to call him by the wrong name, and then throw barbs at him and his pitching ability. Can't say as I'd be throwing you any balls either.Originally posted by RobSk

Speaking of movie villians how about Tim Roth from Rob Roy. Yes it was a forgetable movie but he was pure evil. He got an Oscar nomination for it I believe.
How about Gary Oldman? One of the BEST villians in any film he does.
-

Agreed. I don't usually bother players at games. I figure they have enough on their hands without me up there bothering them. Last season when I saw the Tigers at Camden Yards I wanted to go up and chat with Granderson. However they were out there warming up so I thought it would be rude to go up there and say something.Originally posted by tiger337

True to my word . . .
If I Were a Rich Man
TEVYE
"Dear God, you made many, many poor people.
I realize, of course, that it's no shame to be poor.
But it's no great honor either!
So, what would have been so terrible if I had a small fortune?"
If I were a rich man,
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum.
If I were a wealthy man.
I wouldn't have to work hard.
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
If I were a biddy biddy rich,
Yidle-diddle-didle-didle man.
I'd build a big tall house with rooms by the dozen,
Right in the middle of the town.
A fine tin roof with real wooden floors below.
There would be one long staircase just going up,
And one even longer coming down,
And one more leading nowhere, just for show.
I'd fill my yard with chicks and turkeys and geese and ducks
For the town to see and hear.
And each loud "cheep" and "swaqwk" and "honk" and "quack"
Would land like a trumpet on the ear,
As if to say "Here lives a wealthy man."
If I were a rich man,
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum.
If I were a wealthy man.
I wouldn't have to work hard.
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
If I were a biddy biddy rich,
Yidle-diddle-didle-didle man.
I see my wife, my Golde, looking like a rich man's wife
With a proper double-chin.
Supervising meals to her heart's delight.
I see her putting on airs and strutting like a peacock.
Oy, what a happy mood she's in.
Screaming at the servants, day and night.
The most important men in town would come to fawn on me!
They would ask me to advise them,
Like a Solomon the Wise.
"If you please, Reb Tevye..."
"Pardon me, Reb Tevye..."
Posing problems that would cross a rabbi's eyes!
And it won't make one bit of difference if i answer right or wrong.
When you're rich, they think you really know!
If I were rich, I'd have the time that I lack
To sit in the synagogue and pray.
And maybe have a seat by the Eastern wall.
And I'd discuss the holy books with the learned men, several hours every day.
That would be the sweetest thing of all.
If I were a rich man,
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum.
If I were a wealthy man.
I wouldn't have to work hard.
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
If I were a biddy biddy rich,
Yidle-diddle-didle-didle man.

I've got a question for anyone who goes to games. I think I am going to the game tomorrow (I say I think because it is supposed to rain), it is a 1:05 start, if I wanted to be there for batting practice, what time would I have to get there?

Well, at least I'll get to see this game. Not only do I have to work tomorrow during the game, but I can't keep up with it on the computer because the entire news staff (me included) has to attend an audio conference on media law & libel.
Figures, it's a Bonderman start too.

I got to see Arizona BP when they came to town and that was 1:30 before the game. I imagine you will have to get there really early for the Tigers BP and keep in mind it's an afternoon game so some teams bypass BP with the afternoon game after a night game. You could always see Vance Wilson take some BP hacks.Originally posted by tigersrok
