  1. Super smart dude. I've talked to him quite a bit over the years, including back in his minor league ops days with the Mariners.
  2. I absolutely remember... I was out to dinner at a restaurant in NYC with about ten friends, trying to get the score to come up on my phone. I couldn't get service, was frustrated and knew it was late in the game, so I stood up and walked out without saying a word, dinner still on the table. I walked down the street to the first bar I found, went in, ordered a beer, and then turned around to the TV with the game on...I turned around as the pitch was delivered and Maggs hit it out...chugged my beer, went back to the restaurant and finished the meal with my friends.
  3. For reference, I went back and looked at my pre-2008 rankings....I had Joyce 13th and Clete 20th at that point.
  4. I can't speak to the decision directly, but frankly he's just not that highly rated, even in the org. Despite some of the prospect coverage fawning over him, he's a glove first org guy that will bounce to a variety of levels -- just like Toledo last year -- when they need to fill a hole, because good defense plays at every level with minimal adjustment needed when you're in a pinch.
  5. Jose King is still around. He's had trouble adding strength to his skinny frame and can't consistently drive the ball. His glove is adequate at shortstop. He'd be better served gaining versatility and adding good speed to a roster where he can handle both middle infield spots and across the outfield. Barring some unforeseen physical and offensive growth, he's a speedy little org guy.
  6. It is? His .231/.286/.308 line suggests something substantially in the other direction. Steering clear of the stats if you'd like, I've seen little from actually watching the games that his bat is actually ready at this point. That said, I am also willing to acknowledge that I've probably been quite a ways on the low end for him the last two years....he's a fringe big leaguer for me, and that's where I've been at for a while.
  7. I don't think the park in Lowell meets the minimum capacity expectations of the Eastern League/Double-A, and there's not much room to expand at that location.
  8. First time traveling somewhere out of the northeast since COVID started....I've been pleasantly surprised by the seriousness of people where I'm at in Texas. Masks consistently worn, no whining, solid protocols in place most places, etc
  9. I'm on my way to Texas as I type this...another deployment.
  10. One of the girls woke me up early this morning, so I took advantage and went to play at the beach.
  11. Sisters on the hunt for adventure...
  12. Manning normally works 92-94 throughout his starts....only bumps higher than that on occasion. I've never had a ton of pitches from him higher than that in any start I've scouted. His fastball tends to play up a bit because of the extreme extension at release.
  13. No filters....just converted the raw image to black and white. With the sun setting directly behind them, I didn't need to do anything.
  14. I've been playing with my camera again lately, even ordered a new lens that should be here next week. I typically end up taking a lot of pictures of my girls with various backgrounds from our adventures. This one was totally impromptu, just hanging on the back deck the other day....one of my recent favorites.
  15. Add talent if you can. They have plenty of players they can cut later if they have excess and the minors are reduced.
  16. Take Cole Henry, offer him full slot at the top of the second and dare him to go back to college. If he does, fine, you get a comp pick and larger bonus points to play with in a full draft next year.
  17. From one corner of the inside.... My work on COVID is slowly starting to wind down (been going hard since 12 March) and may actually sunset by about 10-12 May.....for now. Every bit of modeling I have been privy to suggests this thing is coming back hard and I'll have to reengage, and then we'll walk away and it will likely happen again. All of our planning right now centers on how we draw down without compromising our ability to react quickly in a month, two months, or six months. This sucks. Having to plan to keep doing this at some unknown future date, all while trying to do my normal job, trying to play teacher, trying to give my wife space to do her part to keep her three person small business alive, and trying to find time to focus on me and keep my sh** straight so I can be ready....
  18. I can't get into a ton. They're dealing with some of the same issues, but they're on a timeline behind the other two I'm working with. The soft spot is real. I spent nearly a month there working post-Maria.
  19. Thanks. I'm remote at this time, providing coordination and support to NY, NJ, PR, and VI.
  20. I promise you it is not a photo op. I'm currently working on the response to COVID.
  21. The draft has little to do with the MLBPA....those new draft picks are not members and the MLBPA has consistently sold the rights of amateurs and minor Leaguers out in favor of benefits to their members.
  22. It's not about factoring in their projected floor. It's about factoring in the relative risk that they don't reach their projected ceiling. That has to be a part of the caluclus at 1-1.
  23. I've heard no legitimate concerns from scouts about Martin's arm strength and I had no concerns when I saw him last season. For me, barring some unanticipated collapse by Martin, he's easily the guy for me at 1-1. For as "safe" as everyone considers Torkelson, there's a ton of pressure on a right-right, first base only (and yes, it is first base only!) profile....that bat has to reach max potential, leaving so little margin for error. Give me Martin.
