  1. mcshottsie... i think the end (last 1/4) of your section of this story was spot on, but the first couple of paragraphs might not be fair to the kid at this point in his career... i think ints (and bad throws that didn't get picked) can be grouped into a few catagories...and when the coaches look at the film today they will look at what he did and see which they fell into... they could be coverages/schemes he's never seen..."rookie mistake...learn from it and don't do it again"... could be no time from the line to make the correct read..."not your fault there" or he's seen it and just made the wrong call..."if you had it to do over, what would you do differently?...so then, i won't see you do that one again?" and lastly, you knew it was covered but you threw it anyway..."this isn't the sec anymore, this is the nfl...you got it now?"... you seem very certain that it is the last one... i'm hoping that it's more of the third type...and that he can be coached thru it...i'll give him the benefit of the doubt and see a few more games...but if it's still the same by turkey day then there might be cause for alarm... the total story itself was one of the best overall i have read...
  2. d trop...in response to your responses...and this is just to clarify...not looking for a flame up... re: the expectations (#1)-the saints are a legitamate contender for their division and a sleeper candidate for deeper in playoffs beyond that depending on what their d does...the lions aren't...that was my point...sure, they have a punchers chance at this point, but it wasn't ali vs frazier...we all knew that...to get all overblown that they got beaten by a superior team is somewhat silly to me...they aren't in that class yet...and i mean that in the best way possible...yet... #2--competetivness--you and i may differ on the importance of this...the team i saw last year got behind early and would then just quit...they had first faced this the year before when they went great in the first half and collapsed down the second...and when it started again last year (on the opening series) they (not every single player, but as a collective group) just stopped and mailed it in...you could see it in the body language and posture...and that coaching staff had lost them and weren't capable of turning it around to the point of it snowballing to the worst record in the history of the game...when the troops stop believing, the battle is lost...i see this group as being different...and i see that as an important thing to begin building on...it think they competed all the game this time...as professionals should...much of last years team should have been embarrassed to get paid... now, do they have the talent to turn that into wins?...not yet...but no talent and no desire got them 0-16...at the very least, i think they are slightly improved in both areas...2 wins worth?...maybe 4 at the outside?...but at least more than 0?...or do you see them never winning again?...i don't think you do... so at this time i'll take being within reach as a plus...yep, brees almost set the record against them...last year he would have...and been in the shower by the end of the halftime show...these may have to be the milestones you work with at this point...not saying these are the endpoint of sucess and to be satisfied with them...hell no, i'm not...it is not enough... but you aren't going to reach the moon without at first learning to orbit the planet...and this "new lions" rebuilding program is still working on getting all the debris cleared away from the bomb crater that the last group left behind...are we even on the launching pad yet?... believe me...i understand the frustration...ten years...it takes an unbelievably bad job in a parity based system like the nfl to turn an average team (which is what mr ford gave to millen) into a nuclear wasteland...and it will take more than just one year and one draft and one game to fix...that's all i was saying...not that this is good enough..but piling on to perhaps one little thing they did do right is like kicking the crutch out from under a cripple...and then beating him with it...
  3. so lets review... 1) the lions lost...don't think anybody (realistically) expected them to win, now did they?...if they had, it would have been the top story of the day... 2) they were more competative than last year...fell behind early (again)...but not as far...and they didn't just curl up and die when they did ( big plus)... 3) stafford looks like a rookie qb...he's got some talent...and he makes some stupid throws...holy moley, you mean he's a work in progress?...so was aikman (or harrington) at this point...if he's not at this point, it's an abberation (sanchez has a better team and played a weaker one)...if it's the same after 8 weeks then there's a problem... 4) defense still needs work...i think we knew that...d-line weakest part of d?...knew that too...missing starting corner vs. one of best qb's in the game?...that sure as shooting can't help...delmas has potential...but gunther still has buku work to do... 5) offensive line still below average...still no ground game...this is more troubling to me than the qb play...you can hide the growing pains more if you don't have to throw it every down...didn't seem to be the backs as much as the line just not opening anything up...don't see this getting better vs minnesota either...very troubling 6) cj's a freak...and everybody in the league knows it...he's getting the full blanket (and maybe a couple of extra shams too)...therefore the complimentary recievers need to be better @ getting open from the lesser coverage...and the qb needs to be better @ looking to cj to hold them and then throwing it the otherway (which is why i'd play the rookie, cuz you only learn this on the field @ game speed)...the rest of this group was pretty invisible...especially the #1 te...coah, unless the kids hurt, we need to see more of him asap... 7) a return game?...really?...that's a suprise...solid execution in all phases...can't say i have seen this in the whole stan kwan era...a small sliver of hope... 8) the team with the better talent won...again no suprise...that is the way it should go most weeks...that's why the call them upsets...but the gap is less than it was last year...obviously so...they were competative...makes me think that rod may need a couple of sorry from a few people...he really may have made the best he could out of what he was given...and he was in way over his head (all the coaching in the world don't make a pig a prom queen)...and anytime millens head comes on t.v. the channel should be changed to prevent it's destruction...but it will take time to undo the most total evisceration of any team ever in the total history of major sports...it is going to be one of those journeys of a thousand steps...and we are still in fingers and toes land... so how did i grade it?... i say not so good against one of the top third kids in the class... but maybe not the worst "special" student in the room either... juniors' no einstein, but he may have figured out how to get his finger out of his nose...
  4. and it won't be a holding call, it will be a block in the back...cuz 85% of all kickoffs/punts now have this penalty called...almost the easiest bet you can make...
  5. i think it's an option...but just that, an option...not a plan... if you get an offer you entertain it... and if you think it would help then you do it... i think this front office has shown so far that they will entertain multiple ideas in the pursuit of making the overall team better...they are not locked into one single way of doing business... which makes sense to me... when you have fallen this far, hell, why would you take anything off the table?
  6. a competetive 4-12... not sure which games...a bounce here...a drive there...a team looking past them... those big flips last year for some teams were aided by the field coming back to those teams as well as them getting better...i don't see that happening in this division... but i also don't see this team as being beaten by halftime in over half of their games like last year... they still have a long way to go...maybe farther than anyone in the history of the league ever has... but i can realistically see improvement in many phases of their games... i will bet money that they are not the worst team in the league this year and someone else will stink worse... respectabilty this year...mediocrity the next...
  7. key is spot on there at #104... this is going to be an evolving roster vs. a static one... these guys don't seem to be about "taking what i got and coaching it up"...they look more like a "if we ain't got what i need lets go try another guy until we get it"...so i do think that any of the depth guys can and will be exchanged for other guys from week to week based on what's needed and what's available... they still get first dibs for another couple weeks over anybody else...so why not use it to your best advantage?... as far as northcutt, he might still be there for two reason i can think of... 1) veteran mentor for the reciever corp...seems to be one "professional" veteran in each group... 2) he may have drawn more interest from other teams if exposed than looker did...if you have a choice to cut guys you know you can get back vs. guys you won't, it just makes more sense (how novel for the lions front office)...and i'd bet lookers phone is the first one they call if somebody gets hurt (unless they think somebody better is available of course) to me this roster shake up does looks a lot like what the fins did when tuna bill came in...not saying we get the same results, but it is a possible blueprint...
  8. maybe see what the raiders might give you for him?
  9. don't cha know that half the folks here will say it before the opening kickoff...and a third of them have already said it...
  10. i personally think that this team has far exceeded what it should have considering the dramatic fall of in offence from where it was last season... they cut their #3 hitter because the thought he was finished is spring training (and esentially replaced him with josh anderson)...and lost their #5 guy to a complete season long (minus a week or two) funk that may be mental (mrs mags?) or him falling of the cliff talent wise (age?)...then the #6 guy goes on the dl for >50% of the season (and still can't play the field or hit from one side of the plate so he's still nothing but a part-time dh)... to fix this deficeit (from a team that they new would score less becuse of changes at catcher and ss)...they had to use a platoon of aaaa players...and a boatload of smoke and mirrors...didn't the yankees looked like this without a-rod back in may?...they got healthy, this team never did... so you rely on an improved pitching staff and much better defense... so, about that staff?...your 4/5 starters out of spring are now on permanent dl (and may never play again?) or moping up in the pen (until this week)...and you are damn lucky that your rookies arm hasn't seized up yet (and hopefully will be alright next spring)...your free agent bull pen pick up couldn't find the plate for a month and your flamethrower is busted yet again...ask the red sox to remove papelbon/okajima and see what they would say about their chances to stay on top... i think they may not be the best team in baseball...but they have never quit when they have had all the adversity/opportunity to (unlike last years squad who looked like they were mailing it in by memorial day)...i think this glass might need to be looked at a anything above half as a plus... rather on focus on how they might colapse mr henning, how about how they have actually overachieved to stay this far ahead this long with 2 teams still visible in the mirror?...or is it easier to throw stones than build walls?...
  11. this is just speculation to sell papers in my opinion... but no player is untouchable/untradeable for the right package...but in this case i think the package would need to be pretty good... i think that part of this might be that it is evident that this team need to focus on getting a legitimate leadoff hitter...grandy just isn't this guy (no matter how many leadoff homers he hits)...he has grown out of that role and is now a number three or five guy in any other teams lineup...the tigers just don't have anybody better for that spot with this roster so they keep playing him there... so, if you are looking at that and the player(s) need(s) to also play one of the positions that need to be covered next year (at least one outfielder and/or a middle infield-if polanco isn't signed/sizemore isn't ready yet)...therefore, what teams have the player/players that would work?...the orioles have 2 guys that fit that particular scenario...ipso facto, problem solved... not saying it has to be those guys, or that grandy needs to go anywhere...but they know this lineup lacks a leadoff man...hence the josh anderson experiment etc... and if you can fix this without losing grandy i'm all for it...this team has very few young core position players...i would like to keep as many of them as possible as this farm system does not seem to be developing them...pitchers, yes...position players, not so much... so if you are dd, do you spend the money to chase a carl crawford instead?... or do you see if you can trade for an eric young jr. or a dexter fowler style "young flyer" from somebody like the rockies?...both ideas have pluses and minuses... again, i think henning is just tossing things against the wall to see what sticks...if a couple do pan out he can go back and say he was right...if nothing comes of it, it just gets forgotten anyway...
  12. the proof will come in the product on the field...but i for one am happy with a front office that is using every edge that it has to make the team better...i'm liking the mayhew era much better each week just because the are leaving nothing on the table...these three weeks are a tiny bonus for sucking so bad last year that needs to be exploited to it's fullest...nice to know we finally have somebody at the helm that understands these things...

this team needs to draft a younger, hungrier, better conditioned, and less play taking off version of this mr rogers that they had when he first got here in next years draft (for about the same money)
  14. supply and demand is not this teams friend this year... almost a dozen teams shoping for one bat...less than six bats available...cost goes up in either dollars (take my big fat bloated contract please) or prospects (which this club just doesn't have a lot of compared to many of the other shoppers)...so therefore you mr gm are going to overpay this season if you make a deal... so how much is too much?...a rent a bat for porcello?...sounds like a doyle alexander part deux situation to me...and yes, i remember they did win that year, but how many got away for that one?... is the gm being told by the owner to manage for the long term?...or is it a win now situation?...i don't think any of us on this board is qualified to answer that one...but i do think that the last win now trade they thought they were making was the renteria deal...and you can all make your judgement on that one...
  15. realistically, i think the tigers are out of useful chips vs. what other teams have to offer for the few quality, affordable, players available this year...the numbers are not in their favor... just too many other teams buying that would usually be sellers that have deeper farm systems to offer than what the tigers do... i know it's not the answer anybody wants to hear, cuz everybody (me included) thinks that this group isn't enough to get it done and a trade is necessary...but without either overpaying in terms of talent or dollars, i think the team they got right now is the team they are just going to have to work with...sometime reality just isn't the way we would like it, now isn't it?... this division may come down to if they can figure out how to manage to win some of these 2-1 games instead of losing them...
