  1. I think Utah has shown it's a better team than BSU because they have played more BCS teams. They wouldn't get blown out. I would have agreed about Boise State getting blown out two weeks ago, but they have finally got things clicking. It would depend upon the competition, but they would both be defeated, not blown out. They'd make a contest of it.
  2. I would indeed be better if unwanted pregnancies never occurred. Unfortunately, many people in the anti-abortion movement oppose birth control as well--including my church. I mourn the fact that the Church hierarchy defied the requested and overwhelming opinion of it's scientists, theologians, and ethicists almost 40 years ago and kept the ban on birth control in place. They did it to avoid the embarrassment of admitting they had been wrong--the kind of self-important face-saving that Christ is said to have abhorred. As for abortion always being wrong--no. I don't believe that. It depends upon the situation and the reasons a woman is doing it. There are competing "goods," and the nature of this competition between "goods" is best left to the person most affected by them--the woman. Compassion should come down on the side of both the mother and the unborn. That ratio of how that compassion is divided should be left to woman and her conscience.
  3. I agree. Tarring and feathering him got old. The good thing about this might be that even given his last half improvement, the Tigers chose not to resign him because they are confident of finding better relief help. Let's hope this is the case.
  4. They have the second youngest team in 1-A this year and the QB is a sophomore. They will really rock next year. Hope the coach doesn't leave for greener pastures. He's said bigger is not better and that better is better. Hope he lives up to all the hype about being a Zen guy and has larger goals than money and fame.
  5. By TIM BOOTH Associated Press Writer BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Jared Zabransky and the No. 18 Boise State Broncos reduced Timmy Chang's bid to break the NCAA Division I-A passing record to a footnote Friday night, routing Hawaii 69-3 for their 19th straight victory. Chang fell 14 yards short of breaking former BYU star Ty Detmer's career passing yardage record, and threw four interceptions to break former Purdue quarterback Mark Herrmann's Division I-A interception mark with 74. Zabransky ran for 123 yards and four touchdowns, including a school-record 85-yard scoring run in the third quarter, and passed for 164 yards for the Broncos (8-0, 5-0 Western Athletic Conference). Boise State scored 69 straight points, including 38 in the third quarter, en route to its 23rd straight WAC victory and 24th consecutive home win. The Broncos also improved to 4-0 against the Warriors since joining the conference in 2001. The Broncos had 533 yards of offense by the end of the third quarter, finished with 589 and set a school record with eight rushing touchdowns. The 66-point margin tied for the worst road loss in Hawaii history, a 66-0 loss at Wyoming in 1996. © 2004 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. They are finally playing like the team we thought they could be. They looked pretty tight out there tonight and I think they are now 13-0 on games televised by ESPN. Averaging 47.3 points a game. Too bad they'll still never make it to a BCS bowl game this year...sniff..sniff). 09/04/2004 Boise State Broncos 65---Idaho Vandals 7 09/10/2004 Boise State Broncos 53---Oregon State Beavers 34 09/18/2004 Boise State Broncos 47---UTEP Miners 31 09/24/2004 Boise State Broncos 28---BYU 27 10/02/2004 Boise State Broncos 38---SMU Mustangs 20 10/16/2004 Boise State Broncos 45--- Tulsa Golden Hurricane 42 10/23/2004 Boise State Broncos 33---Fresno State Bulldogs 16 10/29/2004 Boise State Broncos 69--Hawaii Warriors 3 11/13/2004 2:00 p.m. (PT) Boise State Broncos at San Jose State Spartans San Jose, CA 11/20/2004 1:05 p.m. (MT) Louisiana Tech Bulldogs at Boise State Broncos Boise, ID 11/27/2004 1:05 p.m. (PT) Boise State Broncos at Nevada Wolf Pack
  6. I'm Roman Catholic and I'm voting for Kerry because I'm an American and an adult with a mind of his own. It's incredibly insulting and dishonest for so many people on this board to castigate the entire priesthood as child molesters on so many threads, then opportunistically latch on to the anti-choice wing of the church to support their own positions. And while I'm at it, I do not appreciate non-Catholics assuming they know what a "real" or "good" Catholic really is. According to church teachings, we have a conscience that is supreme above all else. I'm talking about an "informed conscience," not a "lazy conscience." If I disagree with the church's postion on something and have thought hard about it and searched my heart about it then I am still a good Catholic in my dissent. The Catholic Church is not the monolithic institution that either the church hierarchy or uninformed outsiders would like to think it is. Jesus was a dissenter, and the spirit of Jesus is a threat to every person and institution that is confident of it's own perfection. That goes for me too. That's why I'm pro-choice. Some pregnancies are too complicated to apply a one-size-fits-all rule. Pro-choice people are fond of saying it's a question concerning only a woman and her doctor. I think it's between a woman and her God as well. We are never closer to God than when we search our hearts and conscience for the right answer to a specific situation that defies an easy solution. Oh, and by the way, you're welcome. (Nick Burns, your company's computer guy).
  7. I grew up halfway between Detroit and Chicago in NE Indiana. Detroit was 10 miles closer. I chose only on the basis of geography. God, am I glad I made that decision and that I could read a map. So what if they have the Bulls! Baseball rules!!

  10. Reminiscent of Kandinsky's "Eight Red Rectangles." Red on a white background.... Too literal, though.... Too derivative of the prison house of language from which we all must escape....

When his name wasn't on the list of declared free agents in this morning's paper I was worried...
  14. My ten-year-old daughter loves it...Calls it her "bible." Her thirteen-year-old sister, who no longer wears all-black as a protest against "consumerism," hates it just as much as she hates Hillary Duff.
  15. Suess also did anti-fascist cartoons for left publications before WWII.
  16. I wonder what her response would have been to the Dead Kennedys? Yeah, it's how I feel when I mention Iron Butterfly--even to people my own age...
  17. We agree on something... Can I have your Bud Light?
  18. Does this mean that the link to the suicide hotline I was planning to post might be considered ill-advised?

  20. These people are in the profession of always being "on." I'd think it would get tiring, but I guess not.
  21. I just wish the Cubs would win the World Series too so baseball fans can breathe yet one more collective sigh of relief.
