  1. As much as I don't like them, the Yanks are really amazing. These comebacks are just stunning. Putting them up against the hottest team in baseball will be really fun. I'm pulling for the Red Sox but I'm not holding my breath.
  2. i hardly enjoy seeing Higgy up a the plate but his fielding is pretty good. If we can dump him that's fine. I don't think evenhandedness and being "sunnyside up" are the same thing. There's nothing wrong with criticism. We suck. That is both the spoken and unspoken reality behind all we do on this board. It's the subtext of our lives. We've sucked for years. But we've also made historic strides this year that virtually all objective observers see as significant. Endorsing the substance of these strides is not "sunnyside up" thinking. It's a simple recogntition of fact. We all know what we don't like about the Tigers. Recognizing what's good is not the truck of mere fools, and disliking nearly everything does not make one profound. The Tigers drew almost 50% more people this year than they expected to because the team got better. I'm not usually one to join the crowd on many things, but I'd rather join the fools who saw a reason to cheer--and boo--but at least show up because they knew something good was happening.
  3. I have long resisted the temptation to counter purely negative posting because I thought it would be essentially fruitless. I'm glad I was right on this. For the record: criticism has no meaning without support sweet has no meaning without sour good has no meaning without bad etc. criticism without support is meaningless.
  4. How many teams won 29 games more this year than last? That's the measuring stick. Not our relation to others but to our own miserable performances previous. If you expected to win more than 72 games this year I guess I can't tar you with the accusation of being "negative." Maybe you're the pollyanna fan and not me. It sounds like you expected us to contend...I'm speechless at the thought of that. I'm surpised they didn't lose 100 plus. And if our god awful bullpen didn't blow so many leads we would have been above .500. Still weak but a major step forward. I just don't see what's wrong with taking some pleasure in the progress we witnessed. This is a process. A new club does not emerge full blown from the head of Zeus.
  5. From what I've seen Tim is only asking for balance and when he doesn't see it he points it out. That is indeed preferable to those who point out only the worst.
  6. I'm flattered that you pay such attention to my whimsical pratterings. I'm not sure when I actually get specific enough to say anything memorable enough to gauge my take on certain players. I noted once that Levine had had a 3.14 ERA since the all-star break. He's not all bad. I like Dmitri too, as well as Monroe, Inge and others. Heck, this is the Detroit Tigers we're talking about, not the Yankees. Try to enjoy this process a bit more, man. You'll live longer.
  7. There's criticism and there's criticism. Being unsatisfied is fine. It's necessary. I have just seen little recognition of the hard won improvements the Tigers have forged in your posts. There's a yin and yang to criticism that demands some degree of balance and I don't see much balance in your criticisms. I hope the team can win you over a little more next year.
  8. Indeed. Both yourself and TigersMeow79 are the dynamic duo of negativity on this board. Of the many people who have disagreed with both of you (and they are legion) none of them are pollyanna fans--even Tim. He simply celebrates improvement. That may rub you the wrong way because you don't want to be fooled again into believing that this team can change. I don't blame you. This team has been a miserable joke for years and if that's all you've ever known you've been screwed and you should be angry. But the Tigers have changed. They quite possibly stand on the edge of a new era that you refuse to recognize. Most of us see the glass as half full, not entirely empty. There is a trajectory of improvement that neither of you seem to see. 72 wins does suck. But that is only part of the story. If they are at 72 wins at this time next year I'll join you in the lynching party. Right now many of us have hope for the first time in years. I wish you could share in that hope.
  9. I don't understand this sentence. Could you clarify? Who is "right" and who is "the better person?"
  10. I don't understand what's so bad about Tim's comments. It's no secret that a lot of people on this board have challenged the relentless negativity of a handful of posters. I'm disappointed and surprised that you could consider their criticisms to be based on anything other than a need to strike a pose. Dignifying their tiresome "critiques" as "evaluative" is ludicrous. Tim is one of the few people who have actually bothered to even talk about this issue and trying to silence him is a cheap shot unworthy of your otherwise thoughtful commentary.
  11. He ended up at .372 with 262 hits, 704ABs (record?) 49 BBs and 101 runs.
  12. My Boise State Broncos won a very ugly game 38-20 and moved up in both polls. They should have scored 50 plus against SMU and are really starting to look vulnerable. The Fresno State contest Oct 23 will really tell it all.
  13. By the way, how old were you when you worked your way this far down the sexual food chain? I took me quite a while and we are around the same age..
  14. Morticia in a heartbeat. She's more demure but she could still cast a wicked spell on you so you've got to respect her.
  15. Do you think we can deal him for someone as part of a multiplayer deal?
  16. This one could have made a caffeine addict drowsy. It certainly infuriated the winning team. The Boise State football team sloppily dispatched SMU 38-20 on Saturday night at Bronco Stadium. The team moves up to 19th and is 5-0. 09/04/2004 Boise State Broncos 65---Idaho Vandals 7 09/10/2004 8:05 p.m. (MT) Boise State Broncos 53---Oregon State Beavers 34 09/18/2004 7:05 p.m. (MT) Boise State Broncos 47---UTEP Miners 31 09/24/2004 8:05 p.m. (MT) Boise State Broncos 28---BYU 27 10/02/2004 6:05 p.m. (MT) Boise State Broncos 38---SMU Mustangs 20 10/16/2004 6:05 p.m. (CT) Boise State Broncos at Tulsa Golden Hurricane Tulsa, OK 10/23/2004 6:05 p.m. (MT) Fresno State Bulldogs at Boise State Broncos Boise, ID 10/29/2004 6:05 p.m. (MT) Hawai'i Warriors at Boise State Broncos Boise, ID 11/13/2004 2:00 p.m. (PT) Boise State Broncos at San Jose State Spartans San Jose, CA 11/20/2004 1:05 p.m. (MT) Louisiana Tech Bulldogs at Boise State Broncos Boise, ID 11/27/2004 1:05 p.m. (PT) Boise State Broncos at Nevada Wolf Pack Reno, NV
  17. Multiply Thames final record by three and you get 495 ABs 30 HRs 99RBIs. Think that deserves more than a C. Do we have room for him or is he worth more as trade bait? Low salary, possible high return in exchange for...
  18. That falls under the separation of church and state issue from which churches make hay on this occasion and which they hope to abridge wwhen they want to teach creationism at tax payers expense. It doesn't apply here.
  19. Oh, Biff, Biff, Biff...thank God you don't do this kind of thing yourself. And here I thought you were aware of my efforts to be even-handed and that a "cheeky" smiley face would lend a note of intended irony to my statement... I know a lot of people on this board are libertarian leaning but George Bush is no libertarian anymore than Kerry is. Bush has created and will continue to create a climate where these kinds of things will happen and these run contrary to the laudable libertrarian impulses of many on this board (most of which I share). This a just a situation of the chickens coming home to roost. A truly extreme position is the one set forth by this company. I still don't see why companies/governments have the right to control this aspect of people's private lives (and many others) in either the name of profit-margin or the politically correct nanny state. Now if you want extreme hyberbole, how about this? Companies decide that African-Americans have a record of health problems exceeding those of whites and that in the name of profitablity they will no longer hire African-Americans. Now that's hyperbole.
  20. I wish I hade choices like this Biff. GO!!!
  21. A company purchases your labor, not the right to run your life. George Bush supports the right for a company to do anything to anyone it wants for any reason.
  22. Great discussion D and Tim! Discussions such as these are why this board is great. I am incredibly happy to have a team that is even this good this year--not just because of how bad last year was--but because of the momentum it suggests. We are on a trajectory, riding a wave etc., that can take us far beyond the results of these last many dark years. If we are hoping to avoid 90 loses at this time next year we will really have something to mourn. The big difference between last year and this year is that I truely felt we were in the mix most of the time and not just trying to avoid disaster. That really is progress. This is unacceptable next year.
