Default Senate Proposes giving 22 government agencies free access to your e-mail

Senate bill rewrite lets feds read your e-mail without warrants | Politics and Law - CNET News

Virtually no oversight required. Now explain to me why the NLRB or OSHA needs warrantless access to citizens' e-mail, facebook, etc. accounts.

This bill needs to be squashed like a bug.

    Let alone Homeland Security...

Hopefully this bill gets SOPA'd... sometimes I wonder if these guys spend so many years on The Hill that they are insulated from the danger that they can cause to peoples liberties with bills like this.

    Response from Leahy.

Bill Intended to Secure Email Privacy Now Does the Exact Opposite (Updated: Leahy Responds) - Hit & Run : Reason.com

Update: Via Twitter, Leahy's office tweets: "Ideas from many sources always circulate b4 a markup 4 disc., but Sen.Leahy does NOT support such an exception for #ECPA search warrants." The feed reiterates Leahy's intent to require search warrants.
Ideas from many sources always circulate b4 a markup 4 disc., but Sen.Leahy does NOT support such an exception for #ECPA search warrants
The whole point of the Leahy reforms is 2 require search warrants 4 govt to access email stored with 3-party service providers under #ECPA

Lame Duck Barry has nothing to lose by signing this progressive legislation.

Here's a copy of the bill. It seems to require a warrant (unless I'm missing an amendment which carves out an exemption), but not until three days after the original data was accessed. This is terrible public policy and will hopefully die faster than SOPA.

Will the American citizens have access to the emails from all the Congress and their staffers...
Or, are those protected and privileged communications...
Another wrong turn for our freedom...
And yet, we won't vote these fools out of office...
And replace them with a new set of fools...
    It appears hopeless...
