Mass Shooting on the base at Fort Hood
Sorry, no link. It's breaking news on our local channel. They believe there may be multiple shooters (two or three), seven dead, twelve wounded per WFAA. Unknown, at least to the news, any details about the shooters.
They have the entire base on lockdown.

Forgive my ignorance amidst the horror that is unfolding, but what and where exactly is Fort Hood?

Central Texas, near Waco. It's a very large base and the home of a number of large Armored divisions for the U.S. Army.

In this century, it begs to be asked, could it be home grown or muslim based terrorism? Or is it just some nutjob?

I usually watch CNN for breaking news, but I turned it on today and saw Rick Sanchez. I quickly turned to Fox News.

Reports: 7 Dead in Fort Hood Shooting
AOL News
(Nov. 5) -- At least seven people were killed Thursday and more than a dozen others were wounded in a mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, local television reports said.
NBC affiliate KCEN said one suspect was in custody and one or two others were being sought.
KDFW, the Fox News station in Dallas, said the attack happened at the Soldier Readiness Center.
CNN reported that 12 to 15 people were wounded and taken to Darnell Army Hospital. CBS affiliate KWTX reported that a police officer had been shot but no further information was available.
Army personnel said they did not know immediately whether the victims were civilians or military personnel.
The base, located halfway between Austin and Waco, was placed on lockdown. That includes nine schools located there.

Nobody is speculating, at least not the local news. Reportedly one of the shooters is now in custody.
WFAA has got some lady on the phone who says she has a daughter who is on the base visiting friends and the gossip she got was that it was a recently returned serviceman. But no way of knowing whether she knows any more than anybody else. Chatter says the shooters were wearing uniforms. Doesn't necessarily mean that they were active duty military, though. Not to hard to get ahold of a uniform, especially down there around Fort Hood. Most of the county is affiliated with the military some way.
Not unheard of for some individual soldier to lose it, but two or three in a coordinated attack ... if they were, in fact even military.

there's a second time for most things.
Bold part was my first thought, esp considering they've apparently targeted military bases in the past, before plots were disrupted.

Every American base had better be on High Alert status, just in case. The longer it goes with no other attacks, the more inclined I'll be to speculate it's home grown. If we see something pop up at another base, I'll be really concerned.

If you've never been to a large base, it's not just a lot of military equipment and barracks. They literally are a city with family housing, shopping, parks ...

Good God. Now it's 20 wounded. I hate days like this. It's bad enough for these soldiers to be put in harm's way over seas. To have this happen on a US Base, reportedly during a graduation, is just sickening.

Sad. A woman texting with her husband in Iraq. Many of the soldiers over there left their families behind living there at the base and are frantic for news.

multiple disgruntled ex-military (returning service persons) conspiring to do this strikes me as unlikely.

Latest report says two separate shootings widely separated and the possibility of a third shooter. You can bet there is a National alert.

Sources are denying terrorism, one shooter in custody (40 year old male) and a second shooter surrounded in a building. No confirmation of the third shooter.

You know, it's happened that there have been shootings on military bases over the years. All that testosterone plus nearly everyone at the base armed. But I never heard of there being multiple shooters; usually a lone drunk or individual who had some kind of psychotic break. Even during the Vietnam war when we were under threat on the base, we never worried about shootings. It was bombs or vandals.

As many as 9 killed in Fort Hood shootings, officials say - CNN.com
Quote:
Fort Hood, with about 40,000 troops, is home to the Army's 1st Cavalry Division and elements of the 4th Infantry Division, as well as the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment and the 13th Corps Support Command. It is located near Killeen, Texas.
At least 25,000 people are at Fort Hood on any given day, an Army spokesman at the Pentagon said.
Fort Hood is home to the Warrior Combat Stress Reset Program, which is designed to help soldiers overcome combat stress issues.
|
Perhaps that last sentence is a clue to what happened, but that's pure speculation on my part.

All casualties were in the same Readiness complex, including a responding civilian police/security guard. The three are all soldiers. Two handguns recovered.

Multiple shooters. That's scary. One shooter is a nut. 3 shooters is a conspiracy.

Some reports are saying 12 killed, 31 wounded. How did one dude armed only with two handguns do all that damage, especially on a military base? I mean, the soldiers don't walk around with loaded guns but there are typically MP's everywhere and they are armed.

I left between the general's and The Prez pressers. As I left I heard one reporter ask, "do you think he reloaded?" Stupid question with no worthwhile gain of information.

One of the names of the shooters was released. Don't know the spelling but I think the last name was Hasan.
