I'll agree with you on this too Drizzle. I don't think I even commented on this incident until Obama decided to make it Oval Office material. I think after the Beer Summit, it will all fade away.

I agree too. I hadn't even heard of this until he was asked at the press conference. I did know who Gates was though.

Again, and for the last time, does anyone who is defending Dr. Gates, believe that he was arrested because his skin is black?????
That is the crux of this issue and is why it was thrown into the national spotlight.
Keep in mind both Dr. Gates and President Obama have both linked Gates arrest to a history of racism in this country, and NEITHER, despite their willingness to drink a beer, have stepped back or appologized for those earlier statements.

No - he was arrested for committing absolutely no crime.

Where has Obama done this?

Robert Gibbs on FNS - Jack Dunphy - The Corner on National Review Online
Quote:
|
You may be tooling along on a Sunday drive in your 1932 Hupmobile when, quite unknown to you, someone else in a 1932 Hupmobile knocks off the nearby Piggly Wiggly. A passing police officer sees you and, asking himself how many 1932 Hupmobiles can there be around here, pulls you over. At that moment I can assure you the officer is not all that concerned with trying not to offend you. He is instead concerned with protecting his mortal hide from having holes placed in it where God did not intend. And you, if in asserting your constitutional right to be free from unlawful search and seizure fail to do as the officer asks, run the risk of having such holes placed in your own.
|
Jack Dunphy is an officer in the Los Angeles Police Department. “Jack Dunphy” is the author's nom de cyber. The opinions expressed are his own and almost certainly do not reflect those of the LAPD management.

A Boston police officer who sent a mass e-mail referring to Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. as a "banana-eating jungle monkey" has apologized, saying he's not a racist.
|
Quote:
|
Barrett, 36, who is also an active member of the National Guard, sent off a fiery e-mail to some fellow Guard members -- as well as The Boston Globe -- in which he vented about a July 22 Globe column about Gates' controversial arrest.
|
Quote:
|
In Barrett's e-mail, which was posted on a Boston television station's Web site, he declared that if he had "been the officer he verbally assaulted like a banana-eating jungle monkey, I would have sprayed him in the face with OC (oleoresin capsicum, or pepper spray) deserving of his belligerent non-compliance."
|
Anybody who supports the reasoning for the arrest of Gates, would you have been okay if this guy had been the responding officer? Would pepper spray have been deserved?

I wouldn't say i'm a supporter of the arrest, but i've argued that i've seen the merits, assuming the police are not lying in this instance. If Gates, on top of his belligerence, had resisted arrest, I would have had no issues with pepper spray being used even if it was this racist bastard. I would certainly hope that paybacks would be a ***** for this cop as he does appear to be a racist to me.

this will be dismissed as an isolated incident, he didn't really mean anything racial, blah blah blah. the sad truth is that there are a lot of police that are like that. and many more that are not, but the good guys can't step up and speak out against it or report abuses because they will be shunned, blacklisted, or worse. pretending like it's not a problem won't work.

who are you referring to? who has been defending gates?
to me the issue of his skin color is not only not the crux of the issue but not an interesting issue at all
keep in mind i don't think obama has anything to apologize for

Attorney arrested, says D.C. officer called him 'faggot' - Washington Blade
Quote:
D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier has ordered an internal investigation into a gay man’s arrest for disorderly conduct after the man filed a complaint alleging that an officer detained and arrested him for expressing his dislike for police.
District resident Pepin Tuma, 33, an attorney in private practice, said the arrest took place at 17th and U streets, N.W., shortly after midnight July 26, seconds after a police officer overheard him telling two friends "jokingly" and in a loud voice, "I hate the police."
Tuma said he made the comment in jest as he and two friends, who also are lawyers, were walking to Dupont Circle gay bar Cobalt while talking among themselves about the controversial arrest of Harvard University Professor Henry Louis Gates in Cambridge, Mass., for disorderly conduct.

Pershing Park Evidence is Lost: Loose Lips Daily - City Desk - Washington City Paper
Quote:
Gay lawyer accuses cop of calling him ‘faggot.’ From Lou Chibbaro Jr. in the Blade: ‘District resident Pepin Tuma, 33, an attorney in private practice, said the arrest took place at 17th and U streets, N.W., shortly after midnight July 26, seconds after a police officer overheard him telling two friends “jokingly” and in a loud voice, “I hate the police.”…
In an e-mail to [Cathy Lanier], Tuma said that after repeating twice to his friends in a “sing-song” voice, “I hate the police,” an officer “charged 40-50 feet towards us while yelling at me phrases like ‘who do you think you are’ and ‘who do you think you’re talking to.’”…
He said the officer, later identified as Second District Officer J. Culp, pushed him against a transformer box, placed him under arrest and handcuffed him without immediately informing him of the charge. “As Officer Culp moved me toward a police cruiser, he told me to ‘just shut up, faggot.’”’

This is just my 2 cents. This is a clear-cut case of racism being exhibited by a racist. Henry Louis Gates needs to work on his racist attitude. It sounds like he was looking for a fight and got what he wanted. It sounds like he copped(pun kind of intended) an attitude and escalated nothing into something. The woman who witnessed it clearly showed zero signs of racism. The big mouths need to STFU.

Most important lesson in this whole fiasco is....
....always have a spare key to your house, whether it be hidden somewhere in the yard or with a trusted neighbor. A spare key and none of this happens.

Dr. Gates lock had been jammed, he even said it looked like someone tried to break in while he was on his trip. Got to love the irony(or foolishness).

He doesn't have a back door or a side door?

Yes, but successful entry into a house via another entry point does not unjam a previously jammed door. Still gotta bust it open.

Perhaps. All I know is if my front door was jammed, I'd go to my side or back door and enter that way rather than smashing my front door in. Then I'd try to deal with the jammed front door from the inside. If I still couldn't it opened, and the key/lock was damaged, I'd call a locksmith.
For a Harvard professor - this Gates clown seems to be quite stupid.

Score one for Obama
Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates and Cambridge Police Sergeant James Crowley Spotted Together - wbztv.com
Quote:
Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates and Cambridge police Sergeant James Crowley were spotted at a pub in Cambridge Wednesday night.
The owner of "River Gods" told WBZ the two sat in a booth together and talked for about an hour.
Over the summer, Crowley arrested Gates for disorderly conduct while responding to reports of a possible break-in at Gates' home. Gates accused the officer of racial profiling.
The incident led to a nation-wide debate over racial profiling and race relations, when President Barack Obama commented on the situation - coming to Gates' defense. All three men later sat at a table outside the White House in what became known as the 'beer summit.'
