Conservative Free Republic blog in free speech flap after racial slurs directed at Obama children

"A typical street whore." "A bunch of ghetto thugs." "Ghetto street trash." "Wonder when she will get her first abortion."

These are a small selection of some of the racially-charged comments posted to the conservative 'Free Republic' blog Thursday, aimed at U.S. President Barack Obama's 11-year-old daughter Malia after she was photographed wearing a t-shirt with a peace sign on the front.

They just couldn't resist, could they. I won't post it here, because it's disgusting, but someone also posted a picture of Michelle and her kid talking to each other, and described how they look like monkeys.

But of course, as we all know, these people are "not part of the conservative movement."

Using the comments section from a blog or website to make ANY kind of point other than "There's lots of nutjobs out there or lots of people who will say nutjob things" is ridiculous.

Those comments, admittedly deplorable, can't and shouldn't be used to say " See?? Conservatives! "

That would be a stupid conclusion.

Those are comments of ignorant internet asshats, and that's about it.

Exactly. There are crazy idiots and criminals that support both parties in the United States. I would hope that most conservatives and most liberals don't group everyone in the political party in the same group as idiots like those people who wrote those comments.

Yep. There are liberal asshats and conservative asshats. Ignorance is a common trait of both. The Internet breeds them like rabbits.

Wow. Some visitors to a partisan website say something out of bounds. Now if a single commentator repeats anything they said, I guess I have carte blanche to whine about media persecution for months and months.

The Young Republicans just this weekend elected a racist asshat their leader - she's learned that "cleaning up" your facebook page can be a difficult thing to do.

I think there is plenty of this stuff going around from people with names that we don't need to worry about the Freepers.

The author of that "news" story:

Chris Parry, it appears, has advocated on his Daily Kos blog any number of egregious offenses, among them: posting hate speech on sites like Free Republic and blaming it on conservatives. Parry posted under the name "hollywoodoz" on Daily Kos, where his signature was "Fool me once, I'll punch you in the ****ing head." Parry outed himself as hollywoodoz here, where he discloses the company he helped start. In essence: Parry, the journalist, found his story right where he'd been circling it for a very long time, and reported it as news. Sigh.

This happens on all sides. In this case there were lots of posts from apparently different people (assuming freepers were able to trace IPs, and if not they should be condemned for *that*). It sounds like reporter from canada was acting as a provocateur - not sure if thats Parry or another guy. In the end lots of people took the bait. We'd all be better off with treating such posts as coming from anonymous idiots and thanking god when something better was posted - essentially adopting our policy here!

Anyway, an freeper rep went on MSNBC and talked about this. His position was that it was bad that the comments were posted, Daily Kos had lied about them, and the Free Republic would apologize for the comments when the media apologized for attacking Sarah Palin.
